Chapter 578 - Chapter 578: Where to Slaughter

"I handed this matter over to you not so you could raise problems, but so you could solve them! Coulson, you are a Level 8 agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.! Level 8!"

Nick Fury, who had briefly communicated with Spider-Man, arrived at the Airbus team's safehouse and gave the people inside a thorough scolding. However, this was merely a facade. If someone were able to remove Fury's eyepatch and see the state inside his electronic prosthetic eye, they would be greatly astonished.

Because a shrunken Nick Fury was currently having afternoon tea inside his own eye.

"Many people overlook the properties of Pym Particles. For instance, everyone knows Nick Fury could be an LMD at any moment, but they fail to realize the real Nick Fury might be hiding inside a Nick Fury LMD."

After pouring a cup of Earl Grey tea with milk for Peter Parker, Fury handed him the cup and sat down by a small table. "You know, it's actually quite nice to change perspectives sometimes, especially when they think the real you isn't there."

Peter took the tea. "So... is the Nick Fury standing before me now the real one?"

Fury smiled but did not answer. He sat down, picked up his teacup, and readily agreed to Peter's first request.

"Every remnant sample of Carnage will be handed over to you; S.H.I.E.L.D. won't keep a single bit. Regardless of why Hydra created such a... thing, they'd better not touch it."

Fury watched Peter look around as he spoke and couldn't help but chuckle. "I've pulled a few personal strings and confirmed that Otto Octavius's body was taken. As you know, he created a large number of clones of himself, and almost every clone had his artificial symbiote. That is likely the source of Carnage."

"There was also the molecular resonance device Otto used back then. It forcibly separated me from Venom. Some fragments of Venom must have fallen off then and became the raw material for Carnage."

Peter quickly analyzed the origin of Carnage and then frowned. "Wait, if that's the case, doesn't it mean Hydra has a way to mass-produce artificial symbiotes? They could arm an entire army?"

"Manufacturing these artificial symbiotes is indeed easy for them, but the raw materials are limited. They have to use the derivative symbiote matter they collected during the last symbiote crisis to make them. So, it's not infinite." Fury took a leisurely sip of his tea. "That's also why they wanted to create a 'true symbiote.' They hope to create a symbiote capable of reproduction to expand their scale of production."

However, Hydra itself likely never expected that they would create something like Carnage.

Peter nodded, somewhat relieved, before receiving another piece of intel from Fury. "Also, although they harbor many anti-social lunatics, among the current test subjects, only Cletus has succeeded. Furthermore, they don't have any other 'Carnage' samples on hand. It's as if the degree of rejection from these symbiotes has already exceeded their design parameters."

Peter felt something wasn't quite right. "Are you sure?"

Fury arched an eyebrow and drank his tea leisurely. "I said, I have my connections."

What connections? Connections within Hydra?

After a moment's thought, Peter wasn't surprised. It wasn't unusual for Nick Fury to plant people inside Hydra. It just sounded like this spy was undoubtedly high-level to be able to pull off something like this. One could only say—classic Fury.

"Knull is definitely still unable to escape right now. He likely influenced Carnage's structure, making him extremely powerful while allowing him to slip away from Anti-Venom. But he surely still has weaknesses. If he truly didn't fear high temperatures, he wouldn't have been in such a hurry to wake up and flee the incinerator; he could have just waited for it to open before coming out."

Peter rapidly analyzed Carnage's weaknesses. First, it wasn't that he didn't fear high temperatures, but rather that he didn't fear them for short durations. Second, his molecular state was unstable; Otto's equipment would theoretically be very effective against him.

But a more troublesome problem lay in...

"He's gone, and we don't know where he is." Peter made a request to Fury. "I'm not sure how much of Knull's consciousness can leak through or how much he can tell him, but I hope my family..."

"Your uncle and aunt will soon receive prize tickets for a family trip to England. You won't need to worry when the time comes." After finishing, Fury added, "And I suspect that, in all probability, Carnage won't be showing up anytime soon."

What Peter Parker and Nick Fury never expected was that Carnage hadn't stayed in New York at all. After being severely beaten by Anti-Venom, he had high-tailed it straight out of town.

Of course, he didn't go north to New England; he headed south all the way.

"Spider-Man is too terrifying. I'm simply no match for him."

Having escaped into the Appalachian Mountains, Carnage began talking to himself. When he and Cletus merged perfectly, their consciousnesses merged as well. Now, they felt a deep sense of dread—a terrifying fear of vanishing like a bubble.

No, that wasn't right. Cletus wasn't feeling fear; it was Carnage who was afraid. Realizing this, Carnage wavered slightly before settling down.

He was hungry.

The Appalachian Mountains had no shortage of wild animals, so basic energy could be guaranteed. However, phenethylamine—which is very troublesome for symbiotes—was another story. This substance in animal brains wasn't as delicious as that in human brains, yet the Appalachians were sparsely populated.

While it was easy to hide there, it was not ideal for hunting.

Suddenly, Carnage convulsed a few times before slowly morphing back into Cletus's appearance. He gasped for breath, sat down against a tree, and flashed a look of intoxicated delight.

He questioned Carnage.

"Do you fear death, my dear?"

Carnage hesitated.

"It is right to fear death. Only by fearing death can one understand how precious it is, and only then can one feel how wonderful a destruction it is to strip away the lives of others. A living being has infinite possibilities in its future; it might have a career, achieve great deeds, or even save the world."

Cletus laughed, making a motion as if choking his own neck.

"And we can destroy those infinite possibilities in an instant!"

"What a beautiful moment!"
