The battle raged on, and the one having the most fun was undoubtedly Deadpool. He had managed to find a dog muzzle from somewhere, slapped it onto Zombie Head, and strapped it to his waist. Wielding two katanas, he began hacking through everything in his path.
"Quick! Fire! Fire!"
A squad of Hydra soldiers spotted Deadpool. Roaring, they raised their weapons and opened fire. Deadpool narrowed his eyes at the incoming barrage, sliced a bullet in half with lightning speed, and began a frantic, flashy display of swordplay. He shredded a massive number of bullets, the fragments ricocheting outward and tearing the Hydra soldiers to pieces.
"Back when I could still move, I loved playing like that too. The downside was ending up with holes all over my body," Zombie Head babbled, appearing quite fixated on the blood dripping from Deadpool. "Hungry... I feel myself getting even hungrier."
"Relax. Once we figure out why you keep respawning out of thin air, you won't be hungry anymore," Deadpool replied, drawing two pistols and firing as he walked, hitting Hydra soldiers one after another.
However, he had miscalculated the ballistic resistance of the Hydra armor. Some soldiers survived because they weren't hit in the head. As these fallen grunts aimed at Deadpool, he was still busy bragging: "Guess what? I'm invincible now!"
A downed Hydra soldier took aim and fired one final, unremarkable bullet. But as it struck Deadpool, he let out a strange yelp and collapsed, completely incapacitated.
Ka-Zar, who was passing by while skewering enemies with his spear, glanced over. He knew this man was essentially immortal but didn't understand what had happened. "What's going on?"
"Oh, do you play video games, friend?" Zombie Head answered for Deadpool. "There's a classic game called Sniper Elite. In that world, aside from headshots, a nut-shot deals top-tier damage."
Ka-Zar, the primitive man, didn't quite grasp the concept. He was mainly there to deal with the Serpent Society, who had arrived to surround Deadpool. Unlike Wasp, Kitty, and Peter, who had specific counterparts to deal with, the Serpent Society was a large, formidable group that few could handle alone. While most of them were individually only at "Super Soldier" level, their sheer numbers made them overwhelming.
Gradually, the Avengers were becoming shorthanded.
But speaking of hands?
One after another, Sling Ring portals began to open. Doctor Strange charged out at the front. The "Magic Scavenger" had caught the scent of numerous magical items and chose once again to violate the principles of the Sorcerer Supreme to help the Avengers beat people up.
From another portal emerged Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), War Machine (Rhodey), and Patriot (Elijah Bradley). It was a bit peculiar to see this three-person Ultimate Team joining the fray.
And finally, a late-arriving Black Panther joined them.
"Good to see you, brothers. We definitely need some heavy firepower right now, but how did you guys get here?"
Tony, having cleared a wave of Hydra aircraft, flew over to Rhodey's side. When Spider-Man went to call the Avengers, he had made the coordinates of every Hydra base public. By all accounts, there were seventeen or eighteen bases of varying sizes across the United States. Shouldn't the Ultimates be busy with those?
"Don't get me started," Colonel Rhodes said with a deep sense of resentment. "The moment those coordinates went live, the CIA, FBI, Homeland Strategic Defense, S.H.I.E.L.D., the National Guard, the military, and even the IRS scrambled to snatch all the work. We had nothing left to do, so we came here."
Rhodes spoke with a fair amount of spite. During the purge of Hydra, the various American agencies had actively excluded the Ultimates—the one group with a zero percent Hydra infiltration rate.
And so, Tony asked, "What are you planning to do?"
"Great. Remember to make a list, pal. We're going to need it."
Seeing the enemy numbers on the battlefield likely exceeding ten thousand, Tony didn't have time for sentiment and dove back into the fray. The arrival of the Ultimates had an immediate impact. Carol charged straight toward Deadpool and Ka-Zar's area to face off against the Serpent Society.
Deadpool, liberated from his "nut-shot" agony, scrambled up and rushed out of the danger zone. Then, he spotted a bespectacled, dangerous-looking old schemer protected by Hydra-modified soldiers, who was currently "therapy-talking" the Hulk.
"That's right, Hulk. What you need now isn't anger and combat. You've been tired of those for a long time, haven't you? What you need is rest—"
"My God! What are you doing? Hypnosis?"
The man attempting to hypnotize the Hulk was Doctor Faustus, the director of the Antarctic base and a high-ranking Hydra operative. As a master of hypnosis, he was targeting the strongest yet most mentally unstable Avenger.
But Deadpool had wandered over after being freed by Carol.
"Get rid of this annoying brat!" Faustus ordered his guards.
"Hey, Master Hypnotist, I guarantee you won't survive this chapter. Do you know why?"
Deadpool nimbly dodged the attacks of the modified soldiers while closing in on Doctor Faustus. "Because your power is hypnosis! Do you know how many female characters are in this book? The last guy with hypnosis powers, Purple Man, died before he even made an appearance!"
What was this idiot babbling about?!
Faustus frowned and continued his hypnosis of the Hulk. "You see it too, don't you, Hulk? This guy is completely irrational. He doesn't want you to stop; he wants you to remain a monster—"
Faustus didn't care whether his soldiers could hold off Deadpool. As long as he completed the hypnosis of the Hulk, he could do whatever he wanted. The Hulk would leap forward and tear this motor-mouthed mercenary to shreds.
But for some reason, the Hulk was just standing there, dazed.
Sensing something was wrong, Faustus immediately tried to bolt, then turned his focus to Deadpool. "Wade, I know you. I know why you became like this. Trust me, I understand you better than you understand yourself."
"Hmm? Really?"
"Of course, Wade. Hydra possesses the greatest technology; we can cure your cancer. Join us."
"Think about what you'll get. You'll have a handsome face, a bright future, you could—"
Doctor Faustus activated his powers for the hypnosis. Deadpool lowered his arms and dropped his katanas to the ground. Faustus let out a triumphant smirk.
Deadpool then reached for his waist, ripped the muzzle off Zombie Head, and screamed, "Watch out, grenade!"
Faustus, startled by Deadpool's shout, instinctively moved to dodge, but Zombie Head landed unerringly on Faustus's neck and took a vicious bite. Doctor Faustus turned into a zombie almost instantly, and Deadpool promptly blew his head off with a single shot.
"That's the end for people who play with hypnosis. Phew—satisfying!"
