The next morning, Qingyi got up carefully so as not to wake little Lingxi, who was sleeping snuggled against his chest.

The little girl clutched his shirt in her tiny fist and let out a soft, grumpy growl when he stirred, but she soon went back to breathing deeply, never once opening her eyes.
He gently pried her fingers loose and handed her to Rouxi, her mother, who received her half-asleep, pulling her daughter close to her body out of pure instinct. Then, after kissing each of them on the forehead, Qingyi walked toward the bedroom door.
Besides Rouxi and Lingxi, almost all of his wives were sleeping there, scattered across the enormous bed, and he trod lightly so as not to wake any of them.
