Chapter 6: Blood and Oaths
Notes:
I don't think I've mentioned anything about sizes yet, so I will here: Artemis is about the size of Meleys, only a little smaller. Her kind are supposed to be the biggest dragons in the HP universe, and I've made the dragon in the HP universe a little bigger (It just makes sense to me, I can't picture dragons being anything but big). That being said, Artemis' kind would normally get a bit bigger than what she is. I'd say, in this story, Ironbacks range between the Cannibal and Dreamfyre, but Artemis was kept in captivity and underground so she didn't really grow to full potential.

Hariel #5
There was some tension when they walked into the room. Queen Alicent seemed a little colder to her husband than her stepdaughter -- she sat with her knees angled more towards Princess Rhaenyra than to the King, her shoulders hunched in to herself a little until they walked in and she straightened her posture up . When the Queen glanced at Hariel and her newly declared guardians it was dismissive and cool. The Princess Rhaenrya, at least, seemed more interested in their arrival, although she had a very cooly polite expression on her face, her hands tucked into themselves in front of her stomach.
King Viserys, however, was as jubilant as he had been as he sat the Iron Throne. He spread his one good arm wide in greeting, and Hariel couldn't help but notice the stump that was his missing right arm. She wondered how long he'd been without it -- he seemed pale, sickly, with bandages that covered two fingers on his left hand. He didn't seem to be in a significant amount of pain because of the arm, at least.
"Cousin, how good it is to you! How was your voyage?" King Viserys' face brightened as his eyes turned towards Rhaenys.
"It was pleasant, although from my understanding Meleys would prefer to nap all day than to take another long journey." Rhaenys smiled, and Hariel could hear the fond exasperation in her voice.
Meleys, close to a hundred, seemed to speak almost exclusively of sleeping -- and of her dreams. She had just this morning rambled at Hariel and Rhaenys about how she'd dreamed of sheep so large she could not eat them in one bite, that they had floated by her like flies and she had claimed them out of the sky. Then about how that splendid dream had been interrupted by a much less interesting one about a young woman who had emerged from a fire with neither hair nor the outer layer of leather humans wore, but instead three dragon hatchlings, and a shorter one about a set of humans with a set of icy-blue eyes -- like two blue stars set upon cold, cold faces.
Artemis had been a lot more interested in the dragon's dreams than Hariel had been, who had mostly 'oh, yes, how interesting'-ed her way through the conversation.
At the very least Meley's interest had been roused by her rider learning to speak. It was almost a little funny to see the giant red dragon perched over the human, slowly pronouncing words so that Rhaenys could repeat them -- like a mother teaching her child. Not that Hariel would ever actually say that out loud. Rhaenys was good at hiding her frustration with how slowly she was learning dragonspeech, but Hariel could tell that it did not please her.
Yes, it was working. Rhaenys was learning, even though her husband Lord Corlys could not -- and that had to mean something, yes? They hadn't tried with magic yes, as Hariel was planning on starting with potions. Some required spells, yes, but not all of them did. The easier potions would be a good test to see who could learn and who could not, but Hariel would not try to make potions on a ship. It was too dangerous, too difficult, and she wasn't exactly a Potions Master anyway.
That would wait for dry land -- and for them to be away from court.
"So it is true, then, that you can speak with the dragons." Princess Rhaenyra stepped forward so that she stood next to her father, her hands clasped as her gaze drifted between Hariel and Rhaenys. "I must confess I did not know what to think of when I read that you were learning, cousin."
Rhaenys smiled. "It is a very difficult language to learn, I must confess. It can also strain the throat, so I have been training my throat that I may speak longer. But it is true, and it is splendid. My ward has also agreed to teach the rest of our family dragonspeech, among other things."
Hariel did not know that it was possible for King Viserys to look more delighted -- and yet he did. He stepped forward so that he stood closer to Hariel, and his expression was so open and jubilant that it reminded Hariel of a child being given a puppy at Christmas.
"Oh, but that is wonderful! What a delightful gift, Lady Hariel, that you bestow upon us. I cannot wait to try this speech -- although it pains me to say that my own dragon, Balerion, passed long ago -- and now it is an even larger tragedy, as he was the last Valyrian hatched eggs. What he could have told us of our lost home would have been glorious!" His expression dimmed a bit as he said this, a slight sag to his shoulders.
"If it is any consolation, your Grace, one of the other dragons may have information passed along from Balerion and the others. Artemis, my dragon, has some information that was passed along from her mothers and grandmothers." Hariel said. "She is still at Driftmark, along with her hatchlings -- they are too young to be away from their mother, and she was too tired from the journey to come here. But she has much to speak of."
"Then it is possible some of our history was kept, passed along the generations of dragons." 'Viserys beamed. "I would learn soon, Sorceress. I will have to visit this dragon of yours, when she is recovered from her journey."
Meleys had been tired, too, which is why they had all arrived at King's Landing by ship. Although it hadn't been the Sea Snake this time, but instead a smaller ship Corlys had called Laena's Delight.
"Your health has not been strong of late, husband." There was some exasperation in the Queen's voice as she spoke, as well as some sharpness.
"Oh, I am not so sick that I cannot take a short trip to Driftmark. It is so close I could spit and it would land on Driftmark's shores." King Viserys grumbled, although to Hariel he looked like he needed to sit down -- he was a bit pale faced and there were dark circles under his eyes now that she was looking at him closer.
"There is no need to rush in, Father, I am sure that the Sorceress will be happy to wait a bit to begin lessons." Princess Rhaenyra's piercing gaze met Hariel's and she had to resist the urge to shiver a bit.
It was not hostility that she met there, not outright distrust or anger -- no, nothing as blatant as that. But there was an air of superiority and an expectation of surrender that Hariel found that she did not like. King Viserys -- no matter how demanding his letter had been, had been nothing but kind and excited and she could forgive him the demand that they arrive at King's Landing so soon after their long journey. He was clearly over the moon in a way that neither Rhaenys nor Corlys could ever outwardly show, but seemed to feel to some degree.
But Hariel found the Princess' gaze to be…more worrisome than she'd imagined, and she hoped that she was just imagining it.
Hariel bowed her head as she spoke. "I will be here as long as Princess Rhaenys and Lord Corlys see fit to foster me, Your Grace. It will be my delight to teach my magic to those that can learn it." She had, once upon a time, been the one delighted and awed to learn magic -- and she could not deny that she had loved to teach Dumbledore's army.
Rhaenys' hand was warm on her shoulder as she stepped forward. "That was something we wished to discuss with you, cousin. Lady Hariel and I have come to an agreement that she will teach our family the lost art of Valyria --magic -- to those who can learn, although she will not guarantee that all of us are capable of learning magic or dragonspeech as it may have been lost to time -- as long as we foster her and help her to establish herself."
Rhaenys' hand squeezed her shoulder, just slightly as she spoke and Hariel nodded. "Yes, that was our agreement, your Grace. My family may not be from Valyria, so our magics may be different and I can't promise that you will be able to mimic everything I can do, but I can promise to help you in your journey to find that lost path."
It was the speech that Corlys had prepared her to give as they sailed to King's Landing, as he had stressed the importance of never promising something she did not know she could keep. An Oath, it would seem, was just as dangerous to the people of this land was it was to her own.
"You believe that not all of us will be able to wield the magic of Valyria, then? I fail to see how that would be, when we are all descendants of the Old Blood." There was a tightness in Princess Rhaenyra's voice as she said this, although her expression did not really change.
Queen Alicent's posture shifted, just slightly, and she turned to gaze briefly at the Princess. "It would seem, as of late, that not all of the gifts of Old Valyria stand strong." She said, slowly, and Rhaenyra seemed to glare at her a bit.
"Oh, nonsense, nonsense," King Viserys waved off, and moved to sit beside Queen Alicent. He patted her on one knee with his good hand and then relaxed into his chair. "Do not worry, I am sure Aemond will be fine -- dragon or not, his veins run thick with the blood of Old Valyria."
"Yes, my sons' veins do run thick with the blood of Old. I am sure Daeron and he shall learn just as quickly as they have learned High Valryian." Her smile was tight, but seemed pleased even as a shadow seemed to shroud Princess Rhaenyra -- if Hariel wasn't mistaken, it was because that shroud fell over her, in fact. "It would be wise to send word to Father that Daeron must come back. I will not have him miss out on his heritage, on his birthright."
Queen Alicent seemed even more pleased as she made this declaration, her posture becoming not relaxed but softened, almost, as her face did.
King Viserys seemed surprised, as if he was being reminded of something. "Oh, yes, it would be a shame for him to miss out. Lyonel, send word to Otto that I require my son's presence back in King's Landing."
The dark haired man who stood in the corner nodded obediently, although his gaze didn't leave where Hariel stood with her guardians. "Aye, consider it done, your Grace."
"When shall the lessons begin? I am sure my sons will be glad to learn." Princess Rhaenyra said, tightly. "And what of Daemon? We do not expect to neglect him in this, I would hope."
King Viaery's sighed, heavily. "He has fled to Pentos, after his marriage and it would not seem he intends to return anytime soon, I am afraid."
"Perhaps if he had received the proper blessing for his marriage he would not stray so far." Queen Alicent said, tightly. "Are you not teaching your sons High Valyrian, still, stepdaughter? Last I heard you were waiting until they were older to do so, perhaps it would be best for them to learn that before they attempt this language of beasts."
Princess Rhaenyra stiffened and seemed to glare at the Queen. "I was waiting for them to get older, but with such splendid news to greet us I am happy to begin sooner, stepmother."
King Viserys waved his hand as if waving off an old argument he was tired of having. "That has happened too long ago to be angry about anymore, wife. Daemon now possesses two beautiful, strong daughters. Fatherhood changes us all, and I am sure my brother is no different. No, I will not deny him this."
"There is no need to worry, cousin. I have already sent word to my daughter about what we have discovered that she may come back home with my grandchildren. We are simply awaiting their reply." Rhaenys said.
King Viserys nodded. "Ha! We will see him soon, then. My brother was never much for letters, but I cannot see him standing aside while our lost inheritance lays within reach."
"Laena would not stand for it, anyway." Rhaenyra said, and smiled. "No, I cannot see my cousin allowing either her or her children to be left on the wayside."
"Splendid! We will all be here, then, together. I cannot wait to begin." King Viserys leaned, heavily, in his chair. "Although, perhaps you are right -- I think it may be time to rest soon."
"You intend to remain on Driftmark, then, Sorceress?" Queen Alicent asked, and she furrowed her brow. She leaned closer to Viserys but he waved her off.
Corlys stepped forward. "Yes. She will stay on Driftmark, where she is only an hour away by flight and a few hours away by ship, where my wife and I can guide her as is our Oath." He said this sternly, his shoulders drawn back so that he stood at his full height, his head straight and looking forward.
Queen Alicent frowned at him, but King Viserys waved his hand before she could speak. "That is acceptable. I would not have you be an Oathbreaker, not when we are so close. We are a family, after all. It will be nice to have reason to visit more, and to have you visit us all the more."

Aemond I
-
They were taking too long. Aemond knew that his father wished to speak with the Sorceress first, after her introduction to the court -- and it made sense, it really did. It would be stupid to speak only of Valyria for all of the court and their spies to hear! Or worse, the unworthy. No, it was better down in the privacy of their apartments.
He only wished that they would speak faster, that he could speak with her as well.
He also wished his half-sister's children would not be here. The eldest was five, just a baby still, and Aemond doubted they would understand much of anything. No, they did not need to be here at all.
He had so much he wanted to ask, to discuss. She had lived on the land of Old Valyria for a few months, it would seem. At least that is what he understood from Ser Laenor. He had not wanted to speak with his sister's husband at first -- and yet Ser Laenor had heard rumors of this sorceress from his own Uncle and Aemond found that, as he waited to speak to the woman in question, he could no longer hold himself. If speaking to the husband of his half-sister would answer some of his questions he would do it and not be called craven for it.
What was it like? How did she live? What did she see? Were there any dragon eggs, or dragons, that still lingered there? He had so many questions sitting in his mouth he was afraid he'd vomit if he did not get them all out soon.
Aemond had read that the buildings in Old Valyria were rivaled by none, that they were so tall that they kissed the sky, so long and strong that one could allow a dragon to roost on top without worry. Did any of them still stand? Was there nothing left of Old Valyria? None dared to venture on its lands after the tales of Aerea Targaryen, or King Tommen the First had come and made it clear that all who stepped on Valyria would either die a painful death or never return.
But that also meant no one truly knew what it looked like and lived to tell the tale -- expect this Sorceress.
"Stop pacing, your worrying isn't going to make this go by any faster but it will make me dizzy." Aegon snapped from where he lounged on the couch, his head laying against the armrest.
He hadn't even drunk that much so Aemond did not know why he was acting so foolish. Mother wouldn't let him drink that much wine, only a half-full glass with supper despite his unseemly behavior, and yet he was acting like he was ready to pass out.
"I want Mother." Lucerys told his Father as he twisted his hands in his shirt, his face nearly giving way to tears and Aemond had to resist the urge to snort at him.
It was not becoming behavior of a Prince, and Ser Laenor would not approve. Not that he particularly cared for what the man thought, but Aemond did not want to start an argument when the sorceress could walk in any moment. No, he would not look a fool because he had acted rashly.
He was not Aegon.
He was seven, a Prince, and almost a man. He would look it as much as he could, even if he wanted to laugh at the fact that Lucerys was already four and still couldn't be away from his Mother for long without being brought to tears. Daeron, only a month younger, had already gone to foster with their grandfather not even six months ago and hadn't shed a tear.
"I imagine they won't be much longer, Luc. Your mother and grandfather simply wish to speak with this sorceress a little more before she is introduced to you all." Laenor said, his arm coming to sit on the back of Lucerys' shoulders and Aemond had to look away from it.
"She is laying a path, stone by stone, and planting the trees." Helaena said as she studied the embroidery loop in her hands.
Aemond did not recognize what she was making. Usually she only embroidered the bugs and insects that she loved so much -- despite Mother's insistent wish that she embroider something pretty, like flowers, birds, or even a dragon or two as was their sigil.
But she was now just embroidering the weirdest thing Aemond had ever seen. It was like a horse with wings, and the face of a bird. Mother would not like it any better than the spiders Helaena normally favored, Aemond thought, although mayhaps she would not see the difference.
Aegon snorted into his water cup. "Sure, whatever you say."
Aemond glowered at his brother, and if it weren't for the fact that they were in the same room as his…nephews, he would have snapped at him. Did he not realize Helaena, his sister, was to be his Queen? He needed to speak to her more respectfully, even if she sometimes said weird things. It did not matter. She was of their blood. Their sister.
The door to their room opened before Aemond could say anything, though, and his mother stepped forward. She gave a tight smile to Laenor and his children as she moved to stand closer to them.
Aemond straightened as much as he could and had the urge to resist touching his clothes to make sure they were neat. He wore mostly green, as that was their family's color, but Mother had not argued with him about wearing his favorite cloak, the black and red one that depicted the Doom of Valyria. It had been the most splendid gift he'd ever been given, and by Helaena at that. Mother quickly admonished Aegon, though, and made him sit proper even as he scowled at her.
Rhaenyra stepped forward and gave him only a passing glance as she made her way to her children. Lucerys took her hand almost immediately and tugged on it to be held. Aemond, once again, had to resist the urge to snort at the younger boy.
It was easier to resist this time as the Sorceress came in with Princess Rhaenys and Lord Corlys. Her eyes looked so much more green now that Aemond was close, and he could see a scar on her forehead that looked like lightning. Was it carved with a knife, he wondered, or with magic? Or was it even a scar at all -- mayhaps it was a birthmark, a sign of magic?
Father looked tired as he came in, and Aemond was a bit surprised he had not gone to bed after his chat. He went to bed earlier and earlier it would seem, although -- Aemond glanced at Rhaenyra -- mayhaps it was not surprising. He always had energy to see to his half sister and her children.
That did not matter now.
"You are a Sorceress, yes?" Aemond asked, before anyone could say anything else.
He stepped forward, closer to the Sorceress and tried to convey the seriousness in his voice and expression as he spoke. He wanted to be taken seriously, as a man and not a child. "I have heard that you can speak to dragons. I wish to learn."
Behind them, Aegon snorted. "Did you not see that pretty little trick that she performed earlier, brother? Besides, what does it matter? You don't have one."
"Of course I saw it, I am not blind." Aemond wished he could hit his brother sometimes, instead he clenched his fists. "And it matters not. I will have one, one day, and I need to know how to speak with it."
"And yet you ask 'You are a Sorceress?" Aegon's voice went higher pitched as he mocked him, and Aemond could feel his face heat up.
"Stop that, now!" Mother told Aegon, fiercely, and if they had been alone Aemond is sure she would have boxed his ears.
He, at least a little, wished they had been alone so that she would.
The Sorceress smiled at him, though, despite Aegon's mocking. "That is why we are here, Prince."
She did not look like she was trying not to laugh, which made Aemond feel a bit better. He was already hearing the others whisper about how he didn't have a dragon -- he could not stand the idea of another, of someone with magic, laughing at him for asking as dumb question.
"Lady Hariel will be teaching dragonspeak to us and our children." Father beamed. "Along with dragonspeech she will be attempting to teach us magic, to those of us that can learn it."
"To those of us that can learn it?" Laenor said, and Aemond wished he would have stayed quiet that he could ask questions.
"Yes, I cannot guarantee that everyone will have the ability to learn magic, only that I will do my best to teach it to you. Where I am from, once does not learn magic -- they are born with it." Hariel said.
Aemond felt, for a moment, as if he was falling. Born with it? He worried his lip. He did not have a dragon, even when his nephews -- whom Aegon whispered and mocked about being bastards -- had their very own. Would he not be able to learn magic?
He did not know what to say to that. It could not be true, and he refused to believe it.
He would learn. He would. He would have a dragon, he would wield magic, and he would prove to everyone that he was of the Blood and that he was worthy.
"When do we learn?" He demanded, and straightened his shoulders so that no one would see the nervousness in his posture.
Aegon snorted, and tried to lay back down despite Mother subtly pinching him on the arm. "What does it matter? None of this matters."
Aemond could not stop himself from scowling at his brother. How could the fool be so stupid? If only he'd been born first, at least Aemond was putting the work in! The effort! And Aegon just lay there, drinking water as he pretended it was wine.
"Oh, but you possess the fires of Old! Lady Hariel will find the time as she learns Common and our ways at Driftmark, with my cousin and her husband, but don't despair son -- it will be soon." Father smiled, and he ruffled Aemond's hair.
For just a moment, just a brief second Aemond forgot about what they were speaking off -- Father had never done that before, had never touched him so casually and fondly before -- and then it sunk in and he could not help himself from crying out in despair.
"She's leaving!?" He turned his gaze to Father quickly and urgently and blurted out. "I wish to go with them. Let me foster with Cousin Rhaenys, Father."
Father was being much more amiable to him than normal -- even at supper he had spoken to Aemond, had allowed him to leave the table even though he'd only eaten a little.
Father was as excited to learn as he was. Mother would not allow this -- not after Daeron had been taken by Grandfather, who had insisted on taking Daeron on as a ward despite Mother wishing for him to stay.
But this was too important. Too important for Aemond to stop and consider anything other than the fact that Driftmark and Dragonstone, his half sister's home, were as close to one another as they were to King's Landing and that there was no way Rhaenyra wouldn't be flying over all the time to learn herself.
He gazed at his father, insistently, determinedly, and tried to press upon him the importance of the matter. "Let me foster with my good cousin, and let me learn sorcery with Lady Hariel by letting me return to Driftmark with them."
Notes:
And the girls are fighting again! :(
Quick notes:
1. Rhaenyra and Aemond both call Rhaenys 'cousin' even though she's not just because it's something that's easier for everyone. I call the children of my cousin 'cousin' myself, and I figured them calling Rhaenys cousin instead of like, 'second cousin" and such seemed to just fit better.
2. I'm going with a mix of the TV show and books. The ages for both are much different -- Rhaenyra was 8 in the books when she was made Heir, and 14 in the TV show. So, as of now, at 117, Jace is 5, Luc is 4, Joffery is just a few weeks old. I can't remember if he was supposed to be born at Dragonstone or not, but I know that Alicent had Rhaenyra bring Joffery right away to be seen and I'm going with Rhaenyra had left to KL to see her father and had him there while she was there.
Aegon is 11, Helaena is 8, Aemond 7, and Daeron is Luc's age so he's 4.
Baela and Rhaena ae both around 1.
Thanks again to everyone who reads, who left a review, who bookmarked, and who left a kudos! And thanks for all the Thanksgiving well wishes!! It was a great Thanksgiving :) I ate so much turkey and so many tamales
