Alaska Sighting Report: A bear that had failed to enter hibernation was spotted near a small town.

As everyone knows, bears are animals that hibernate.

If a bear fails to accumulate enough fat reserves before winter, leaving it unable to survive the season in hibernation, it may remain active throughout the winter, constantly searching for food.

The reason animals rely on hibernation isn't simply because temperatures become too low for activity.

Rather, it's because food becomes scarce during winter, making it more efficient to reduce movement and conserve energy.

A bear that is already hungry and then faces a season where food is difficult to find is naturally going to be extremely irritable.

In southern Alaska, where the latitude is lower and food can still be found during winter, roughly a quarter of male bears do not hibernate.

In northern regions, however, both males and females generally follow their biological instincts and settle into hibernation properly.

When humans discover a brown bear wandering around when it should be hibernating, the usual response is to kill it.

The goal is to prevent these large predators from targeting humans and eventually attacking populated areas.

Unfortunately, the town had only one elderly hunter, and he had been injured before winter arrived, making it impossible for him to track a bear through deep snow.

Most of the town's adult men had also left Alaska to seek work in the continental United States.

Very few remained in a remote place like this.

As a result, a teenage girl volunteered to hunt the bear herself, relying solely on the experience she had gained from shooting a few bottles with a hunting rifle.

The town's elderly residents wanted to stop her, but lacked the ability to do so.

Their settlement was extremely isolated.

The town didn't even have a qualified sheriff.

Such aging, slowly dying communities were hardly uncommon in Alaska.

While tracking the bear's trail alone through the frozen wilderness, the girl encountered a man traveling with a tiger.

If there hadn't been a human standing beside it, she might have raised her rifle and shot the tiger on sight.

A bear that failed to hibernate was dangerous.

But that didn't mean the tiger—dismissively referred to by the man as a "tabby cat"—was any safer.

The man promised that his tiger would help hunt the bear.

His only condition was that he would have first claim on the trophy.

The girl naturally had no objections.

According to a hunter's code, whoever made the kill owned the prize and could do whatever they wished with it.

The man's tracking skills were remarkable.

He consistently found signs of the bear's movement in the snow and never failed to follow the correct trail.

Yet both he and the tiger moved with obvious awkwardness, as though neither was accustomed to traveling through deep snow.

In less than a day, they caught up to the enormous brown bear, which had become increasingly aggressive from hunger.

The man instructed the girl to stay downwind and provide long-range support with her rifle.

From that position, neither human scent nor the smell of gunpowder would reach the bear.

Meanwhile, he and his tiger quietly approached from the side.

Preparing for a close-quarters fight.

The clash between tiger and bear was about to begin.

Without any warning, and without the man giving any commands like an animal trainer, the tiger sprang into action the instant it entered striking range.

The Kodiak brown bears found in Alaska weighed between 660 and 1,320 pounds as adults.

A bear still roaming during winter was usually underfed, making it somewhat thinner than a healthy specimen.

The girl estimated the tiger's weight at roughly 500 to 600 pounds.

The two animals appeared fairly evenly matched in size.

Tiger and bear immediately collided, teeth and claws flying as they tore into each other.

Both struggled for superior positioning, attempting to gain the high ground and use their body weight to dominate the other.

Yet the tiger fought nothing like a wild animal.

Large predators generally shared one instinct: once they bit something, they never wanted to let go.

If they could latch onto prey and drag it down, they would do so relentlessly.

Tigers, lions, and bears all followed this pattern.

But this tiger fought more like a medium-sized pack hunter.

Instead of trying to hold on, it constantly inflicted wounds, drained its opponent's stamina, and wore it down over time.

It resembled the tactics of hyenas or wolves during a coordinated hunt.

Whenever either animal managed to land a bite, both instinctively shook their heads violently to increase the damage.

Unfortunately, the thickness of their hides meant neither could easily bite through the other's defenses.

The bear, however, seemed much more determined to pin the tiger down and control it physically.

The tiger was different.

Whenever it slipped free, it immediately disengaged and used its superior agility to attack from another angle.

The girl heard several furious bear roars.

She never heard a single tiger roar.

The tiger constantly lowered its body and prowled around the bear in circles.

Whenever it found a favorable angle, it launched another explosive attack.

The brown bear, meanwhile, became increasingly passive.

It no longer dared rear up and throw its weight into crushing blows.

Every such attempt was dodged.

Then the tiger would leap onto its back and attack from behind with claws and fangs.

The battle between tiger and bear was captivating.

Yet the girl watching from afar suddenly noticed something even more alarming.

A second brown bear was approaching from behind the man directing the tiger.

"Look out! Behind you!"

Rather than firing her rifle at the ambushing bear, the kindhearted girl shouted a warning.

The man spun around.

The bear's paw was already within striking distance.

The distance was too great for her to see exactly what happened.

All she knew was that by the time she raised her rifle to aim, the bear was lying on the ground while the man remained standing perfectly upright.

As if nothing unusual had happened, the man casually sat down on top of the fallen bear and shouted to his pet:

"Katie! How long are you planning to play with a bear that goes down in one punch?

"Finish up already. It'll make a nice extra meal tonight."

The tiger and bear faced each other.

Suddenly, the tiger roared.

The tremendous sound echoed through the mountains and forests.

Even from a distance, the girl felt as though she had been struck in the chest.

Breathing became difficult.

If she felt that way, the bear facing the tiger directly suffered far worse.

The roar frightened it so badly that it reared onto its hind legs.

Spreading its forelegs wide, the bear answered with a roar of its own.

But the moment it stretched out its neck, the tiger struck with lightning speed.

Its jaws clamped onto the bear's throat.

Then the tiger performed a movement that seemed completely impossible for an animal.

Its entire body swung like a pendulum.

From directly in front of the bear, it whipped around toward the rear, nearly completing a full circle.

The bear's head followed the motion.

Its neck twisted more than one hundred eighty degrees until its muzzle pointed backward over its own spine.

Its cervical vertebrae snapped instantly.

The bear died on the spot.

Katie, who had already killed several animals since arriving in Alaska, stood proudly atop the fallen bear and let out a long, challenging roar toward her Kryptonian two-legged companion.

The girl who had witnessed one man and one tiger defeat two brown bears was so shocked she couldn't speak.

She simply watched as they hoisted their trophies onto their shoulders and disappeared once more into the snowy wilderness.
