Chapter 8 - CH-VIII. The Northeast Signal

The strongest resonance signal led northeast — toward the dome cluster the maps called the Ashfen Reaches, a loose network of three smaller domes connected by warded tunnels rather than open road. The tunnels were, theoretically, the safest way to travel between domes. Theoretically.

They departed Solvane at the fourth bell, Valid Cards stamped for Dome Ashfen-North, moving fast. The Emperor-breed travelled in its compressed state overhead, invisible but constant in the Sovereign bond — Raiden could feel it tracking the sky above them, a continental drift of quiet power watching over the road.

Sera had enchanted her travel boots overnight. Her system had apparently unlocked an enchanting sub-menu at level two, and she had spent the pre-dawn hours methodically applying an Ice-element durability layer to her soles that would, she explained, allow her to skate frictionlessly on any surface she chose to freeze. She demonstrated by running up a section of frozen road wall at a forty-degree angle without losing speed.

"That took you one night," Jester said, watching her land perfectly.

"I had a lot of anxiety to process," Sera said. "Enchanting helps."

"I've been a swordsman for a week," Jester said, to no one in particular, "and I'm already the least impressive person in this party."

"You have the best snacks," Raiden said.

"That's true. I do have the best snacks."

The tunnel entrance to Ashfen-North was a reinforced arch of enchanted stone, wide enough for two wagons abreast, with a Guild checkpoint at the threshold and a second one two kilometres in. The interior was dim and steady — walls lined with low-level light enchantments that cast everything in pale blue, the kind of light that made faces look slightly ill and distances hard to judge.

Raiden's system pinged at the one-kilometre mark.

Super System · Alert

Anomaly detected in tunnel section ahead.

Multiple Demetron signatures: Chaos-category · Level range 22–28

Breach point: Tunnel wall, sector 4. Recent — within 6 hours.

Chaos-breed in enclosed spaces create spatial distortion — distances become unreliable. God Style adjusting for tunnel acoustics and distortion fields. Recommend Sera Voss take point — Ice-element can seal breach points and suppress spatial rifts temporarily.

They moved into a run.

The breach was worse than the alert suggested. Three Chaos-type Spirits had come through a crack in the tunnel's east wall — low, fast creatures that moved in rolling probability fields, their bodies existing in several positions simultaneously until observed, at which point they collapsed into a single location and struck. Against a normal swordsman, the effect was disorienting to the point of paralysis. Against the God Style, it was simply a matter of choosing which probability to collapse and hitting the correct one.

But the breach itself was the real problem. The crack in the wall was widening — Chaos energy eating at the stone, the tunnel groaning around them — and behind it, Raiden's system counted eight more signatures pressing toward the gap.

"Sera," Raiden said. "The wall."

She was already moving. She pressed both palms flat to the cracked stone and exhaled — and the Ice-element came out of her not with the hesitant, anxious leakage of the past three days but with directed force, a rushing cold that poured into the crack and expanded, filling every fracture with crystalline density faster than the Chaos energy could dissolve it. The wall sealed. The groaning stopped.

The three Spirits that had already breached wheeled toward her — and found Raiden between them and her, God Style active, Dark-element burning at the edges of each strike with the absolute, unhurried precision of something that didn't need to rush because it already knew where this ended.

Forty seconds. Three Spirits down.

The sealed wall held.

Super System · Level Up

Raiden: Level 7 → 9

Sera: Level 2 → 5 (First real combat — accelerated progression)

Jester: Level 4 → 5

Sera Voss · God Style partial unlock: Glacier Seal — Ice barriers now resistant to Chaos dissolution. Instinctive application confirmed.

Sera stared at her hands. The frost had come and gone cleanly, under control, not a single unbidden crystal. She made a small, quiet sound that was not quite a laugh.

"It worked," she said.

"It worked," Jester confirmed, from behind the large piece of tunnel rubble he had tactically positioned himself behind during the fight.

They reached Ashfen-North in another hour, sealed the breach report with the checkpoint guards, and went looking for a cracked assessment crystal.

They found it in the dome's eastern registration hall — a young man sitting on the floor directly beneath the shattered remnants of it, knees drawn up, staring at a system display only he could see, with the expression of someone who had been sitting there for approximately two days and had absolutely no idea what to do next.

His name, according to the panicked registration attendant hovering nearby, was Kova. Eighteen. Earth and Fire dual element. His system had not only cracked the crystal — it had also, apparently, caused the stone floor in a three-metre radius to spontaneously sprout foot-long crystalline rock formations, which were still there, which was why no one had approached him.

Kova Level 1

Dome: Ashfen-North | Super System: confirmed

Element: Earth / Fire | God Style: active (uncontrolled — geological)

Passive: Seismic resonance — emotional states cause localised ground upheaval.

Status: Confused. Sitting on the floor. Has not eaten in two days.

"Hello," said Raiden, stepping carefully over a rock formation.

"Don't come closer," Kova said immediately, not looking up. "I'll make more rocks."

"I have a Super System," Raiden said. "So does she." He gestured at Sera. "And there's a Dark Nightmare-breed heading for Dome Vantris and we have less than four days to find two more people like us. So I need you to stand up."

A long pause. Kova looked up at last. He had the wary, sharp eyes of someone who made decisions slowly and kept them permanently.

"You're serious."

"Entirely."

"...There's another Super System holder somewhere near here. I can feel a signal. It's been driving me insane for two days."

"We know. That's why we came northeast." Raiden held out his hand. "We'll explain on the road."

Kova took it. The rock formations subsided slowly, sinking back into the floor like roots retracting. He stood, brushed stone dust from his jacket, and looked at the three of them with the measuring assessment of someone who trusted slowly and completely once he did.

"Three of us now," Jester said brightly, handing Kova something from his pack. "Also, eat this. You look terrible."

"What is it?"

"A very good travel cake. I can't explain why I always have one. I just do."

Kova ate it. The last rock formation in the floor dissolved entirely.

Three of five. Two days and counting
