Chapter 229 - CHAPTER 229

Within the Eleventh Division, Abarai Renji who had been transferred there under Aizen Sōsuke's arrangement quickly adapted to its rhythm.

Renji himself had always been straightforward and impulsive by nature. Compared to the Fifth Division, where a significant portion of duties involved paperwork and administrative responsibilities, the Eleventh Division suited him far better.

The Eleventh Division was simple.

Fight.

That was all.

And in such an environment, Renji thrived like a fish in water.

It was here that he encountered someone who would become deeply influential in his growth

Madarame Ikkaku.

At first glance, Ikkaku appeared fierce and unapproachable, the kind of Shinigami who lived only for battle. But after spending time with him, Renji realized that beneath that rough exterior was someone remarkably straightforward and unexpectedly dependable.

For Renji, who had only recently joined the Eleventh Division, Ikkaku took the initiative to guide him, even going so far as to spar with him regularly.

Through those battles, Renji came to understand something clearly

Madarame Ikkaku was overwhelmingly strong.

Renji was not weak.

Aside from his poor aptitude for Kidō, his combat abilities were solid across the board. His swordsmanship, physical strength, and resilience were all above average, and because of that, he had always carried a certain level of confidence in his own abilities.

But that confidence was thoroughly crushed when facing Ikkaku.

He was defeated cleanly, decisively, without room for resistance.

Still, that alone wasn't what troubled him.

Back in the Fifth Division, Renji had sparred with seated officers and had a rough understanding of their level. Even if there had been gaps, they were not insurmountable.

But Ikkaku… was different.

Which led Renji to a question he could no longer ignore.

"Ikkaku-san," Renji asked one day after training, "with your strength… why are you only the Fifth Seat?"

To Renji, this didn't make sense.

After all, based on his own estimation, even the Third Seat of the Fifth Division was not vastly superior to him. With continued training, Renji believed he could surpass that level.

It wasn't arrogance it was self-awareness.

Which made Ikkaku's position all the more puzzling.

Not just Ikkaku

Ayasegawa Yumichika, the Sixth Seat, was also exceptionally strong.

Although Renji had long heard that the Eleventh Division was the most combat-focused division in the Gotei 13, the disparity here still felt abnormal.

If the Fifth and Sixth Seats were already this powerful…

Then just how strong were the higher-ranking officers?

Ikkaku paused slightly at the question, scratching his head as if unsure how to respond.

Before he could answer, Yumichika stepped in smoothly.

"That's because the higher seats in our division are… a bit unusual," Yumichika said with a faint smile.

Renji turned toward him, curiosity immediately piqued.

Having only recently transferred from the Fifth Division, there were still many things about the Eleventh Division he didn't fully understand.

Yumichika began explaining.

"First, the lieutenant Kusajishi Yachiru."

"She was personally brought back by Captain Zaraki from the Rukongai and raised within the division. Her bond with the captain is… unique."

"So her position as lieutenant isn't something anyone here questions."

Renji nodded.

He had already heard fragments of that story. The appointment of a lieutenant was ultimately at the captain's discretion, and in the Eleventh Division where strength and personal bonds often outweighed formalities such a situation was not unusual.

Yumichika continued,

"Next… the Third Seat."

At this, his tone shifted slightly.

"Sado Yasutora no, not him. The current Third Seat is a man named Asido."

Renji blinked, slightly thrown off by the name.

Yumichika elaborated,

"Asido is… an exceptional case."

"He's a veteran Shinigami who once led an expeditionary force into Hueco Mundo. During that mission, he was stranded there for an extended period of time, fighting Hollows alone and surviving under extreme conditions."

Renji's eyes widened slightly.

Hueco Mundo.

To survive there alone for years… was no small feat.

"After eventually returning to Soul Society," Yumichika continued, "he was reinstated into the Eleventh Division."

"Given his combat experience and strength, he naturally took the position of Third Seat."

Renji nodded slowly.

That explanation made sense.

A Shinigami who had endured Hueco Mundo and lived to return would undoubtedly possess extraordinary combat ability.

Yumichika added,

"He may not flaunt his strength, but in every battle, he stands at the front. Someone like that… earns respect, regardless of rank."

Renji silently agreed.

Although Asido did not personally train him like Ikkaku, his presence alone carried weight. He was steady, composed, and dependable in combat.

After a brief pause, Yumichika continued,

"As for the Fourth Seat…"

Renji leaned in slightly.

Yumichika's expression grew more subtle.

"She is a member of one of the Four Great Noble Houses."

Renji's eyes narrowed.

"A noble… in the Eleventh Division?"

That alone was unusual.

His thoughts immediately drifted to Kuchiki Rukia and by extension, the Kuchiki family. Since her adoption, Renji had come to understand just how significant the Four Great Noble Houses were within Soul Society.

For someone of that status to join the Eleventh Division…

It was unexpected, to say the least.

Yumichika gave a faint smile.

"The reasons are her own."

He didn't elaborate further.

But then he added quietly,

"However… it is said that her decision may be connected to a certain former Kenpachi."

At those words, Renji paused.

The Eleventh Division's history was deeply tied to the title of Kenpachi a name passed down through bloodshed and succession.

Even now, under Zaraki Kenpachi, that legacy continued.

And it seemed…

That even those outside the division could be drawn in by that name.

Renji exhaled slowly.

The deeper he looked, the more he realized

The Eleventh Division was far more complex than it first appeared.
