She came out of the mansion in her own time, the way she did everything.
Xyra had not changed since the crossing: small, dark-haired, apparently about nineteen, with eyes far older than the face around them. Grass leaned as she crossed the courtyard, and the air adjusted around her.
"You've been busy," she said. "Three weeks outside. Something old, from the taste of what came back through you."
"Very old."
"Are you going to tell me?"
"Later, and not in front of anyone." Vyra was already there with a record slate; Seraphine and Loriel had come through behind him. "First I need a favour, and I want the cost before you say yes."
Xyra tilted her head.
"I want a thousand-to-one field," he said. "Localised. Around the eastern flat only, not the settlement. I need months and I have hours."
There was a pause.
"Is that all?"
"Xyra."
