The morning was quiet.

Not the peaceful kind—more like the island was holding its breath.

Rael stood alone in the clearing, boots planted firmly on the dirt. He rolled his shoulders once, then looked down at the ground like he was judging it. The girls were a short distance away, still waking up properly.

Vivi yawned and stretched her arms over her head. "If today is more standing around with our eyes closed, I'm going to fall asleep."

Kaya laughed weakly. "I almost did yesterday…"

Robin said nothing. She was watching Rael closely. He had that look again—the one he got when he was about to do something without explaining it first.

Rael lifted one hand.

The ground cracked.

Not violently. Not explosively. Just a deep, heavy sound, like stone grinding against stone.

Kaya froze. "D-Did you hear that?"

Vivi took a step back. "Yeah… I definitely heard that."

The earth in front of Rael began to move.

At first, it was subtle. A slow bulge pushing upward, sand sliding off the surface. Then the bulge split, rising higher, pulling chunks of rock with it. Stone folded into stone, shaping itself with rough edges and uneven lines.

It didn't look smooth. It didn't look elegant.

It looked heavy.

A thick leg formed. Then another. A torso followed, wide and solid. Arms pushed out from the sides, long and uneven, ending in blocky hands. Last came the head—featureless, blank, nothing but stone.

The thing stood there, taller than any of them.

Silent.

Vivi's mouth hung open. "What… what is that?"

Kaya clutched her cane like it might run away if she let go. "That's not… that's not natural, right?"

Robin stared without blinking. "You shaped it. Directly."

The stone figure shifted its weight slightly.

The ground trembled under its feet.

Vivi jumped. "It moved!"

Rael lowered his hand and dusted his palms together like he'd just finished some basic chore. "It's stable. That's enough."

Vivi spun toward him. "Enough?! You just pulled a giant stone person out of the ground!"

Kaya nodded fast. "Y-Yeah! Since when can you do that?!"

Robin took a slow step closer to the construct, eyes sharp. "You didn't prepare the ground. You didn't mark anything. You just… did it."

She turned back to Rael. "How?"

Rael met her gaze.

Then smiled.

"Secret."

There was a long pause.

Vivi dropped her shoulders. "You always say that…"

Kaya sighed. "Every time…"

Robin rubbed her temple lightly. "One day, that answer is going to stop working."

Rael chuckled quietly, but when he looked at them again, his smile softened. He could feel it—not anger, not frustration. Just disappointment mixed with curiosity.

He exhaled slowly.

"In the future," he said, voice calmer now, "I'll tell you. Not today. But I will."

Vivi blinked. "You promise?"

Rael nodded once. "Yeah."

Kaya relaxed a little. "Okay… we'll wait."

Robin studied him for a moment, then nodded. "Fair enough."

Rael stepped away from the stone figure and motioned for them to come closer.

"This isn't for show," he said. "This is your test."

Vivi's eyes flicked back to the construct. "That thing is the test?"

"Yes."

Kaya swallowed. "All of us… together?"

"Yes."

She let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding.

Rael continued, "It doesn't think. It doesn't get tired. It reacts to movement and pressure."

He tapped his chest. "If you rush it, it will hit you. If you freeze, it will hit you harder."

Vivi frowned. "You're really selling this."

"I'm being honest," Rael replied.

Robin flexed her fingers. "So what are we supposed to do?"

Rael looked at each of them in turn. "Use what I taught you. Don't just look. Feel where it's going. Feel when it's about to move."

Kaya's voice was small but steady. "And if we mess up?"

Rael glanced at the stone dummy. "It won't kill you."

Vivi winced. "That's… comforting. Kind of."

"But it will hurt," Rael finished.

That shut her up.

He took several steps back, putting distance between himself and the clearing. "I'll be watching. I won't interfere unless I have to."

The stone dummy shifted again.

Its foot dragged forward slightly, leaving a deep mark in the dirt.

Robin took a slow breath. "All right. We move together."

Vivi nodded, jaw tight. "No charging in."

Kaya gripped her cane. "I'll stay back."

They spread out carefully.

The stone dummy moved.

Not fast—but heavy. Each step shook the ground just enough to throw off balance.

Vivi felt it before she saw it.

"It's turning," she said quickly.

Robin reacted at once, sprouting arms from the ground in front of them. The stone dummy's fist slammed down where Vivi had been standing seconds earlier, shattering the dirt and cracking the surface.

Vivi stumbled back. "That was way too close!"

Rael's voice carried from behind. "Good reaction. Slow follow-through."

The dummy lifted its arm again.

Kaya felt pressure—like the air tightening. She stepped sideways without thinking, just as the stone arm swept past where her head had been.

Her heart pounded. "I moved… I moved in time…"

Robin shifted her formation, trying to bind the dummy's leg. The stone resisted, grinding against her limbs. It held for a moment—then cracked free.

Robin hissed. "Too strong."

"Then don't stop it," Rael called. "Redirect it."

Vivi picked up a handful of pebbles with shaking fingers. She closed her eyes for half a second—felt the weight, the pressure—

She flicked.

The pebble struck the dummy's knee. It didn't do much damage, but the impact made it shift its weight.

"That's it!" Rael said. "Use momentum!"

Kaya stepped forward just enough to tap the dummy's ankle with her cane, then immediately stepped back. The stone foot scraped forward awkwardly, balance thrown off.

The dummy didn't fall.

But it slowed.

Robin took the chance, reinforcing her limbs, binding both legs at once. The stone cracked and groaned but didn't break through immediately.

Vivi backed away, breathing hard. "We're… actually doing something."

Rael watched closely.

Their movements were messy. Their timing was off. They made mistakes.

But they were adapting.

The dummy finally tore free, stumbling forward.

Kaya nearly froze—but caught herself and moved, just enough to avoid the blow.

Robin released her hold before it could rebound on her.

Vivi stopped throwing pebbles blindly and waited—felt—then struck again when the pressure shifted.

After several long minutes, Rael raised his hand.

The stone dummy froze.

Then collapsed inward, sinking back into the ground, leaving behind broken dirt and cracks.

The clearing fell silent.

The girls stood there, panting.

Vivi dropped to her knees. "I… I hate that thing."

Kaya sat down hard. "My legs are shaking…"

Robin wiped sweat from her forehead. "But… we didn't lose."

Rael walked back toward them.

"You didn't win," he said. "But you survived. You adapted. That's the point."

Vivi looked up at him. "So… we passed?"

Rael nodded. "You did better than I expected."

Kaya smiled, tired but proud. "That's… a compliment, right?"

"It is," he said.

Robin looked at the cracked ground. "We still have a long way to go."

Rael met her eyes. "Yeah. But now you can protect yourselves."

He turned toward the sea, already thinking ahead.

Tomorrow, they would move again.

And whatever waited beyond the horizon—

They wouldn't face it helpless anymore.
