CHAPTER ONE: THE EMERALD DAWN

PART B

Elara stood in the archway of the bedchamber, her small shoulders rising and falling with quick, light breaths. She was six years old, her youthful features sharing the unmistakable royal heritage of her brother—a warm light-brown complexion, straight silver-white hair spilling past her shoulders, and striking emerald-green eyes that seemed to catch every reflection of light in the room.

She wore a simple white royal dress fastened with a fine emerald-green sash around her waist, paired with practical soft brown shoes. Though slightly out of breath from running down the wide marble corridors, her face radiated pure cheerfulness.

Rain looked over at her, raising an eyebrow with quiet amusement.

"Why are you running through the halls again?" Rain asked, turning fully away from the window. "You know Master Vance always tells us that royalty walks with deliberate purpose."

Elara grinned, stepping entirely into the room and smoothing down her dress with both hands. "Master Vance isn't here right now. And I was running because I was looking for you. Mother sent me to get you."

Rain stepped away from the window frame, his emerald cape shifting gently with his movement. "Is breakfast ready?"

"Yes," Elara said, stepping forward and naturally reaching out to clasp Rain's hand in hers. "Father is already at the table, and Mother said that if we don't hurry, the morning pastries will get cold."

Rain smiled, tightening his fingers gently around his sister's smaller hand. "Then we certainly shouldn't keep Mother waiting."

Together, the two royal children walked out of the bedchamber and into the vast, gleaming hallways of the Emerald Palace. High arched ceilings carved from seamless white marble spanned overhead, punctuated by delicate golden trim that traced every architectural curve. Floating crystal spheres embedded in the high walls emitted a soft, warm radiance that blended naturally with the sunlight streaming through tall, open archways.

As they walked down the wide grand corridor toward the imperial dining hall, guards clad in polished white armor with gold accents bowed their heads respectfully as the young prince and princess passed. Rain acknowledged each of them with a polite nod, a habit his father had instilled in him from the moment he could walk. Respect was not demanded by rank; it was earned through how one treated those under their protection.

They reached the grand dining hall—a majestic, sunlit chamber featuring panoramic arched windows that looked out over the private imperial gardens and crystal fountains.

Seated at the head of the long marble table was Emperor Orion. In his early forties, Orion possessed a tall, athletic build that radiated quiet strength. His light-brown skin matched his children's, and his long silver-white hair was neatly tied back behind his shoulders. A short, meticulously groomed royal beard framed a strong, defined jawline. He wore his imperial attire—a high-collared white tunic reinforced with polished white light armor across the chest, golden shoulder pauldrons embedded with raw emerald crystals, and a sweeping white cape resting over his seat. His green eyes were deep and wise, softening instantly the moment his children entered the room.

Beside him sat Empress Lyra. In her late thirties, Lyra was the picture of regal elegance and warm grace. Her silver-white hair fell in intricate, flowing braids decorated with small emerald hairpins. She wore an exquisite white royal gown detailed with delicate gold thread embroidery that mirrored leaf patterns.

"There are my early risers," Orion said, his deep, calm voice filling the hall as he set down a golden goblet.

"Elara found me, Father," Rain said as he led his sister to their seats at the central table. A servant stepped forward unobtrusively, pulling back the heavy carved wooden chairs for the young prince and princess.

"I found him right by his window," Elara announced proudly, hopping onto her chair and leaning forward toward a plate of warm, golden fruit tarts. "He was talking to the sky again."

Lyra smiled warmly, leaning over to gently arrange Elara's hair away from her face before looking up at Rain. "Checking on the realm before breakfast, Rain?"

"I was just watching the morning light on the floating mountains," Rain admitted, adjusting his gold wrist cuffs before settling into his seat. "The crystal foundations were glowing brighter than usual today."

Orion's eyes flickered slightly at Rain's observation—a subtle shift in expression so fleeting that neither child noticed. The Emperor exchanged a quiet, fleeting glance with Lyra before turning his full smile back to his son.

"The air is particularly clear this morning," Orion said smoothly, reaching for a pitcher of crystal-pure water. "When the atmosphere is clear, the crystal foundations absorb and channel the morning light far more efficiently. It is a sign of a strong, healthy pulse in the land."

"Will we go to the lower gardens today, Father?" Elara asked, her bright eyes wide with expectation. "You promised we could see the young crystal stags near the river."

"If your lessons with Master Vance are completed without distraction this afternoon," Lyra replied with a gentle laugh, pointing toward Elara's plate. "And only if you eat your breakfast first."

As the royal family shared their morning meal amidst quiet laughter and warm conversation, the sun rose higher into the clear sky outside. Light streamed through the grand palace windows, illuminating the golden tree crest carved into the main marble wall behind the Emperor's throne.

Far below the palace walls, far past the grand courtyards and marble gates, the crystal stream continued its steady journey toward the distant edges of the capital. Floating upon its surface, a single emerald leaf drifted quietly downstream, carried along by a current that was slowly beginning to change direction.
