Chapter 94 - Chapter 91: Quiet Hands

The den stayed quiet for a long time.

Not the peaceful kind.

Not the warm, sleepy quiet that came after laughter and play.

This was different.

Heavier.

Like something had settled into the walls and refused to leave.

Aiden hadn't moved much.

Not since.

He sat near the nest, knees drawn slightly in, one arm resting loosely over Lior while Ryn leaned against his side. Kael slept closest, still recovering, still softer than before.

All three of them were there.

Alive.

Warm.

Breathing.

Aiden watched them like if he looked away—

Something else might disappear.

His hand drifted, slow and careful, brushing over Kael's hair.

Then Ryn's.

Then Lior's.

Counting.

Not out loud.

Just…

Making sure.

Across the den, Theron stood still for a moment before stepping closer.

He moved differently now.

Careful.

Measured.

Like everything he did had to be thought through first.

"Aiden," he said softly.

No response.

Not ignoring him.

Just…

Quiet.

Theron crouched beside him instead of standing over him.

Lower.

Closer.

Safer.

"I brought food," he added gently.

Aiden blinked.

Slowly.

Like pulling himself back from somewhere far away.

"I'm not hungry."

"I know."

Theron didn't push it toward him.

Just set it nearby.

Within reach.

"…later, then."

Aiden didn't answer.

But he didn't refuse either.

That was enough.

For now.

A small sound came from Kael.

A sleepy whine.

Aiden reacted instantly, hand tightening slightly.

"I'm here," he murmured.

Soft.

Automatic.

Kael settled again.

Ryn shifted closer.

Lior pressed into Aiden's side.

Three small bodies.

Close.

Safe.

Aiden exhaled slowly.

His shoulders dropped just a little.

Theron watched him.

Every movement.

Every breath.

He had never felt this useless before.

Not in battle.

Not as a king.

Not even as a god.

But here?

With Aiden like this?

He didn't know what to do.

So he stayed.

Quiet.

Present.

That had to be enough.

Outside, the pack moved carefully.

Voices were lower.

Steps softer.

Everyone knew something had happened.

No one spoke of it directly.

But they felt it.

Ronan stood near the entrance, arms crossed, watching the treeline out of habit—but his attention kept drifting back inside.

"…he hasn't slept properly," he muttered.

Eirik stood beside him.

Silent.

Too silent.

"He's resting now," Eirik replied.

Ronan glanced at him.

"Resting isn't the same as recovering."

Eirik didn't answer.

His gaze was fixed on the den.

On Aiden.

Even from here, he could see the difference.

The way Aiden held the pups tighter.

The way he didn't look up.

Didn't smile.

Didn't speak unless he had to.

Something twisted inside Eirik.

Sharp.

Heavy.

This wasn't what he wanted.

It wasn't supposed to—

He cut the thought off immediately.

"…he'll be fine," Eirik said instead.

Ronan didn't look convinced.

But he didn't argue.

"…we'll keep things quiet," Ronan added. "Less patrol noise near the den. Let them rest."

Eirik nodded.

"Good."

Helpful.

Supportive.

Exactly what he should be.

And still—

It felt wrong.

Back inside, Theron finally moved again.

Slowly, he reached toward Lior, gently lifting him when the pup started to stir.

"I've got him," he said quietly.

Aiden didn't protest.

Didn't even hesitate.

That alone made something in Theron's chest tighten.

He held Lior carefully, adjusting him against his shoulder the way Aiden had shown him before.

Awkward at first.

Then steadier.

Lior blinked sleepily, small hand grabbing onto Theron's collar.

"…papa…"

Theron stilled.

Then softened.

"I'm here."

Lior settled quickly.

Trusting.

Always trusting.

Theron exhaled slowly, his grip careful, secure.

Behind him, Aiden shifted slightly.

Not away.

Just—

Adjusting.

Still watching.

Still holding onto the other two.

"…you're doing it right," Aiden said quietly.

Theron glanced at him.

"…am I?"

Aiden nodded faintly.

"Yeah."

A small thing.

A simple thing.

But it mattered.

More than anything else right now.

Theron didn't smile.

But something in him eased.

Just a little.

"…rest," he said again, softer this time.

Aiden hesitated.

Then—

Slowly—

He leaned back against the wall.

Eyes closing.

Not fully asleep.

Not yet.

But closer than before.

The pups stayed close.

Theron stayed closer.

And outside—

Ronan kept watch.

Eirik stood beside him.

Silent.

Thinking.

Waiting.

Because even in this quiet—

Something had already begun.

And it wasn't over yet.
