"What's on your mind, Elyssa?"
I blinked, my eyes moving up to find his grey ones.
The image of his back turned towards me flashed through my mind, and a sudden coldness engulfed my entire body. Yet, strangely, I could feel a trickle of sweat gathering at the back of my neck.
The realization that I wouldn't know what to do if he wasn't in my life, or how helpless I would be without him, hit me so hard that the room suddenly felt smaller. It was as though the four corners of the walls were slowly closing in on me, leaving me with nowhere to run.
My hand moved to the skin above my chest as my heart squeezed painfully.
If it's all fake… I don't think I'll be able to let him go.
My heart… my whole being wouldn't be able to do that.
He was saying something. His lips moved, but I couldn't hear a thing. White noise rang through my ears, drowning out every other sound, even my own thoughts.
What if our mate bond is fake?
Everything in my life is a lie, so what if this one is too?
