This volcanic lake is probably the least suitable place for cave diving. It's filled with sulfur and other high concentrations of sulfide gases, and the water temperature remains above 20 degrees Celsius all year round, getting even hotter further below.
Even without the mythological boost of being the Netherworld entrance in Greek Mythology, and the connection to the forbidden Abyss Tartarus, it's also just a volcanic lake hot spring. The high concentration of sulfide gases makes one dizzy even if they linger at the entrance.
Perhaps this is why Greek Mythology regards it as the entrance to the Netherworld.
