Chapter 74 - TBTS: Chapter 74

When she opened her eyes, the fever was gone. The burning in her blood, the suffocating weight in her lungs, and the agonizing ache that had wracked her bones for days had vanished entirely. She felt light, lucid, and strangely untethered, as if she had stepped out of a heavy iron armor she had worn her whole life.

She stood in a vast, infinite expanse a strange, four-dimensional realm where depth, height, and time seemed to unfold all at once. Everything around her was rendered in soft shades of greyscale, bathed in a muted, silvery fog. It was the same silent space she had glimpsed so many times before the realm beyond the mirror, like looking out through still water or clear glass. After a lifetime of terror and running, there was no fear here now. This peaceful, unmoving void felt like home, a safe sanctuary at last.

Looking down beneath her feet, the physical world was visible through a shimmering, translucent veil. It was like looking down through the surface of a frozen pond into deep water. She saw the clearing, the ancient trees, and the scorched earth. She saw the Omon warriors scrambling, their faces tight with shock. She saw Rissa collapsed in the red dirt, surrounded by the dying embers of her towering wall of fire, her chest heaving as tears trailed down her cheeks.

Aeryn reached down toward the veil. "Rissa..." she called out softly.

Her voice produced no sound in the mortal world. Down below, Rissa did not turn. No one looked up. Aeryn was entirely invisible to them, existing in the quiet space between mortal life and the beyond.

A cold, ragged breath echoed behind her.

Aeryn turned away from the veil and scanned the grey expanse. A few paces away, a solitary figure knelt on its hands and knees in the silvery mist, its back turned to her. It wore the tattered remnants of silver-lined royal robes.

As Aeryn took a slow step forward, her boots making no sound against the multidimensional floor, the figure slowly turned its head.

Aeryn swallowed hard, an involuntary chill running down her spine.

The man's facade was entirely shattered. The handsome, regal face of High King Maeron had peeled away like rotten bark. The left half of his face remained pale and human, but the right half was a grotesque, pitch-black mass of pulsating, corrupted flesh. Thick, oily black veins throbbed across his cheekbone and skull, his right eye a void of pure, liquid shadow that bled dark tears down his neck. It was a truly abhorrent, horrifying sight the rotting truth of the void entity exposed without its stolen crown.

Maeron pushed himself up, his breathing a raspy, wet gurgle. He glared at Aeryn with pure, venomous hatred.

"You fool..." he hissed, his voice echoing with a double resonance one part human, one part demon. "You trapped us both in the spirit veil. You think you have won something, little girl?"

Aeryn stood her ground. Her white hair floated gently in the airless dimension, her posture upright and serene. "I haven't won anything," she said calmly. "I have simply stopped you."

Maeron let out a harsh, barking laugh that turned into a wet cough. He raised his hands, black tendrils of void power sparking from his fingers, curling around his wrists like venomous snakes.

"You think you can destroy me here?" Maeron snarled, stepping closer, his rotten face twisting into a terrifying grin. "Look around you, Aeryn! This realm is anchored by soul-force! If you fight me here if you unleash your power to strike at my core you will burn away your own spirit! You will destroy your bending, your lineage, your very soul! You will become nothing! Is that what you want? To erase yourself from existence?"

Aeryn looked at the black magic sparking in his palms. Then, a small, incredibly peaceful smile spread across her lips.

"Exactly," she whispered, her voice filled with an unshakeable, quiet resolve. "That is how important it is to me to get rid of whatever you are."

Maeron's terrifying smile faltered. For the first time, a flicker of genuine uncertainty crossed his dark, ruined eye. He backed away half a step, his fingers twitching as he sought another weapon.

Suddenly, a raw, bitter madness erupted from deep within him.

"I AM YOUR FATHER!" he roared, his voice booming across the expanse like a violent gale of arctic wind from every direction at once. The sheer physical force of his voice hit Aeryn like a wave, forcing her back a step as the grey mist churned violently around them.

His ruined face twisted in a frantic, resentful frenzy. "You think I was led astray?! You think some demon crept into my bedchamber and corrupted an innocent king?! You naive, pitiful little girl!"

Maeron took a heavy step toward her, pointing a trembling, blackened finger directly at her chest.

"When I learned that my bloodline carried the sacred Trinity, I was consumed by it!" he snarled, his voice dripping with venomous pride and raw greed. "I spent years hunting ancient texts, sacrificing everything to unlock it inside myself. But it rejected me! It refused my blood! And then... YOU were born! An infant! A helpless babe holding the ultimate power of the gods!"

"No... this is no power, but a curse! It is no power of the gods!" Aeryn gasped, taking a shuddering step backward, her white hair swaying in the silvery mist as she shook her head violently. "No... you cannot manipulate me! Stop it! You're lying! You can't be my father my father was a good king! He was manipulated! You're just using his face to deceive me!"

She pressed a trembling hand to her chest, her voice cracking as her denial collided with rising panic. "You are dragging us all into the dark through forces beyond our control! Tell me, who is above you?! Who is ordering you?! Answer me, and I might let you go... can you not see that I hold the power here?!"

"Manipulated?! Who commands me?!" Maeron barked a wet, ghastly laugh, stepping directly into her space, his void eye throbbing with insane jealousy. "No one forced my hand! No entity commands me! My own insatiable ambition paved every single step to the altar! When I realized the Trinity lived inside you, I brought the dark rituals into our own home! I believed that by sacrificing the blood of the Trinity holder by draining every drop of your divine child's blood I could claim the power for myself!"
