"Alakazam, use Electro Cannon."
On a forest path, a teenager wearing a red turban was battling Gary.
"Hm."
Alakazam crossed the two spoons against its chest, electric currents crackling around them as a golden orb condensed—similar to Pikachu's Electro Ball, but far more intense.
"Hu~!"
The Electro Cannon blasted forward like a lightning-coated cannonball, surging with violent power. Its force clearly reached B-rank, the level of an elite trainer nearing Gym Leader class.
"Umbreon, jump and dodge."
Gary's expression didn't waver. Umbreon vanished from the ground in an instant, its leap so swift the opposing trainer's eyes widened in shock.
Boom!
Alakazam's attack struck the ground where Umbreon had stood, tearing up dirt and stone.
"Alakazam, use Psychic."
Seeing Umbreon airborne, the opposing trainer immediately gave another command.
"Hah!"
Alakazam released a multicolored wave of psychic energy from its spoons, firing it directly at Umbreon mid-air.
Boom!
The Psychic blast struck Umbreon perfectly—but to the trainer's disbelief, it did almost nothing.
"What?! It didn't work?!"
"You're too naïve."
Gary folded his arms. "You shouldn't use Psychic-type moves on Umbreon."
Alakazam was a pure Psychic-type. Gary's Umbreon was a pure Dark-type, completely immune to Psychic-type moves. It was the worst possible matchup for the red-turbaned trainer.
"Damn it! Don't underestimate me! Alakazam, use Iron Head!"
Alakazam lifted off the ground and hurled itself forward like a steel-clad missile.
"Umbreon, after dodging, use Tackle!"
"Boo!"
Umbreon sidestepped cleanly, causing Iron Head to miss, then burst forward in a short-range sprint. It slammed into Alakazam's abdomen with brutal force, making the psychic Pokémon grunt in pain.
"This guy's Pokémon is fast…"
"Alakazam, use Focus Punch, keep attacking!"
Growing anxious at Umbreon's speed, the trainer grew reckless.
"Hah!"
Green energy flooded Alakazam's fists as it lunged forward. Gary could feel the wind pressure from the punch.
"Useless. My Umbreon's speed and footwork are exceptional."
As Gary finished speaking, Umbreon danced around the attacks with graceful, precise steps. Alakazam's punches hit nothing but air.
After the wild barrage, Alakazam's stamina began to collapse. This was a common weakness of Psychic-types—amazing burst power, poor endurance.
At this point, the result of the match was already clear.
"Alakazam! Use Double Team, then Recover!"
With a sharp cry, multiple Alakazams appeared, surrounding Umbreon. Recover mended Alakazam's injuries and restored some stamina. The trainer clearly wasn't stupid—but his lack of battlefield awareness remained fatal.
"Useless. Umbreon, don't fall for illusions. See the real body, then use Quick Attack!"
Against a Dark-type, Double Team illusions were completely ineffective. Umbreon saw through them immediately.
A white trail flashed as Umbreon dashed forward in a straight line.
The speed wasn't as extreme as Soru, but among Pokémon, it was already top-tier.
"Don't panic! Use Teleport!"
Realizing his Double Team was useless, the trainer cursed himself.
He knew Gary's Pokémon was Dark-type—why had he even used Psychic moves or illusions?
A ripple shimmered around Alakazam's body.
"Ka!"
Alakazam vanished instantly, causing Umbreon's Quick Attack to miss as it skidded to a halt, eyes scanning the trees for Alakazam's reappearance.
"It's over—Alakazam, finish it with Hyper Beam!"
After Alakazam vanished using Teleport, it no longer appeared anywhere on the battlefield. Confident, the opposing trainer issued his strongest command, certain he could win with a single blow.
Hearing that order, Gary Oak instantly understood that Alakazam had to be hiding nearby. His eyes swept the surroundings—then suddenly narrowed when he noticed movement in the grass to the left.
"Umbreon, left side—dodge, then use Hidden Power!"
The moment Gary spoke, a blazing orange-red beam shot out from the grass.
Umbreon leapt aside, narrowly avoiding the Hyper Beam. Its scarlet eyes flashed, releasing a burst of blue-white energy. A swirling mass of black-hot wind roared toward the left side—Hidden Power with a Dark-type manifestation.
A moment later, Alakazam was violently blown out of the grass. The psychic Pokémon was launched like a cannonball, crashing through several thick trees before slamming into an old trunk and collapsing unconscious.
"Alakazam!"
The opposing trainer ran over in a panic. After checking carefully, he finally let out a sigh of relief—no serious injuries.
"Well done, Umbreon."
Gary smiled with satisfaction now that the match was decided. This Umbreon had originally been his Eevee, while the Growlithe Ash received from Professor Oak was from the same research lab.
After Ash Ketchum published his detailed theory on Eevee's various evolutions, Gary immediately took interest in Umbreon's pure Dark typing. Wanting a perfect evolution, Gary had even traveled to Fantasy Island.
In the Dream Forest of that island, Gary allowed Eevee to gain experience battle by battle. At night, he slept beside Eevee, letting it bask completely in moonlight—strengthening its affinity with darkness and helping perfect its evolution into Umbreon.
