Chapter 8 - Laughter at the Edge of Karma

Akin could still remember clearly the tip of the blade poised at the center of his eyes. That edge had not merely tested his body; it had seemed to ask the same question life itself demanded…

Who are you, truly?

After the jade sword shattered and Elder Chen departed, the silence had not yet faded when the scent of blood from his palm began to sting and itch, as if reminding him that no trial had truly ended.

The young lady was still sitting on his lap without realizing it, her slender arms wrapped tightly around his neck as though afraid he might disappear again.

"You are truly Brother Ling Shan… aren't you?"

The question was not meant to confirm his identity, but to steady her own trembling heart.

Akin smiled faintly, the smile of someone who had just survived death and was still uncertain whether he ought to rejoice.

"If I am not… what would you do?"

"Then I would hold you even tighter."

The answer was so straightforward that he let out a soft laugh, a laugh still tinged with the metallic taste of blood.

The maid carefully wrapped the bandage around his hand. The wound in his palm was still warm, as though the sword had not only cut flesh but sliced through fate itself.

He lifted his gaze to the woven bamboo ceiling, waiting for a voice from within.

"All phenomena arise from the mind…"

The voice of Guanyin echoed faintly in his thoughts.

If the mind does not waver, a blade is only steel.

If the mind clings, even a breath becomes a chain.

He chuckled softly.

So then… had my heart wavered just now?

Silence answered him. No voice descended from the heavens.

After a moment, he sensed that the silence was too synchronized—too deliberate.

Slowly, he lowered his eyes.

The maid and the young lady were both staring up at the ceiling along with him, their expressions tense as though expecting a demon to crawl out from the bamboo slats.

"Is there something up there, my lord?" the maid whispered.

The young lady moved closer.

"Did Brother Ling Shan see something?"

Akin blinked slowly.

"Nothing."

"…Nothing?"

"I was only looking."

The two froze, then lowered their heads in embarrassment. And at that very instant, he laughed. Louder than he expected.

His laughter rang through a room that moments ago had been heavy with the pressure of death.

It was the laughter of a man who had stood at the edge of a cliff and discovered he was still breathing.

"Do not laugh like that!" the young lady scolded softly, tapping his arm. "You frightened me."

"Frightened because you thought there was a ghost… or because you thought I would die again?"

"Do not say such things!"

She hugged him tighter.

Akin stopped laughing for a moment.

That warmth was too clear.

Too real.

Was this Ling Shan's karma, or a bond he himself must now inherit?

Dao teaches that all things flow along their course. Buddhism teaches that all things arise from causes. And he,was he the cause, or the consequence?

Without realizing it, he lifted his head again. And of course, the two girls lifted theirs in unison. Silence….. The night wind brushed past the paper window. Moonlight trembled faintly. The sight was so absurd that he burst into laughter once more.

"Please stop making me laugh, or I will truly lose my mind."

"Because you looked up again!" the maid protested.

"Then I shall look again."

"Don't….!"

Both hands immediately pressed against his forehead. The small bamboo house quivered with the mingled laughter of three voices, laughter sounding at the very edge of fate's abyss.

Akin leaned back against the pillow. His palm still throbbed… The jade sword remained broken. The position of successor still awaited its claimant. The fox village had seen rain of blood.

And he still did not know what Ling Shan had done before his return. This new life had not begun with dawn, but with the edge of a blade. He closed his eyes briefly.

If this is karma, I will accept it with mindfulness.  If this is the path, I will walk it, even if it is slick with blood.

When he opened his eyes again, the young lady was still beside him. The maid was still wrapping the bandage with care. The world had not collapsed. He lifted his head once more.

"Brother Ling Shan!"

"You did it again!"

Their voices rang out together.Akin laughed. Softer this time. Not because it was amusing, but because he understood something at last. Survival may not be an escape from karma, but an opportunity for awakening. And perhaps laughter at the edge of the abyss, is closer to liberation than he had ever imagined.
