Down under the vast treeline, where the tsunami's leading edge was still surging outward hungrily, Ciel had finally decided that it was time.
He had been sprinting flat-out ahead of the flood while his long rabbit ears were already pinned flat against his skull to minimize wind resistance. His small and soft features sharpened into something cold and calculating.
During the whole chase, his eyes had been locked on Keres. Keres was hopping erratically through the mud and above the tree branches in the same general direction.

Ciel could hear the surging wave behind him. He was sure that Keres was frantically trying to outrun the rising water.
If I'm going to do something stupid, Ciel thought, his heart hammering against his ribs as he risked everything he had on one utterly unhinged plan, it might as well be the right kind of stupid.
