Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: Where the Veil Bleeds

They didn't sleep long.

Before dawn, Li Tian was already awake.

Something felt wrong.

Not danger. Not exactly.

But the air… it felt thin again. Like it did in the pass. Like something unseen was pressing against the world, trying to seep through.

Mei Lin noticed him sitting up. "You feel it?"

"Yes."

She stood, scanning the surroundings. "It's stronger than before."

Li Tian nodded. "We're getting closer."

"To what?"

He didn't answer.

Because he didn't know how to explain it yet.

They moved before sunrise.

The forest below the cliff was dense, but as they descended, it began to change.

At first, it was small.

Leaves that didn't move with the wind.

Birds that stopped mid-flight, then continued like nothing happened.

Shadows that stretched too far… then snapped back.

Mei Lin slowed. "This isn't natural anymore."

"No," Li Tian said. "This is leakage."

She frowned. "From the Veil?"

"Yes."

They walked deeper.

The trees thinned.

The ground turned gray.

And ahead

The world broke.

It wasn't a hole.

It wasn't a portal.

It was… a tear.

A vertical line in the air, stretching from the ground up into nothing, like reality had been cut and not fully sealed.

Around it, everything felt wrong.

Sound didn't travel properly.

Light bent at strange angles.

Even time felt uneven like moments were skipping.

Mei Lin stopped immediately. "We shouldn't be here."

Li Tian didn't move.

His eyes were fixed on the tear.

"It's not new," he said.

"What do you mean?"

"This has been here before," he replied. "It was just… hidden."

The System flickered.

[Veil Distortion Confirmed]

[Stability: Failing]

[Caution: Prolonged exposure may trigger memory bleed]

Li Tian stepped forward.

Mei Lin grabbed his arm. "Don't."

He looked at her.

"If we turn away now," he said quietly, "we stay blind."

Her grip tightened.

Then slowly… she let go.

"Then don't go too far."

As Li Tian approached the tear, the world grew quieter.

Not silent.

Just… distant.

Like everything else had stepped back.

When he reached it, he hesitated.

Not out of fear.

Out of recognition.

He lifted his hand.

And touched it.

The world shattered.

For a moment, Li Tian wasn't standing in the forest anymore.

He stood in a city.

But not one that existed now.

The sky was dark red. Buildings stretched unnaturally high, twisted and cracked. The ground was covered in markings circles, symbols, seals layered on top of each other.

And people

No.

Not people.

Figures moved through the streets, their forms unstable, like they couldn't decide what they were.

Some looked human.

Some didn't.

All of them were watching him.

A voice spoke.

Not loud.

Not soft.

Just… present.

"You came back too early."

Li Tian didn't turn.

"I didn't choose the timing," he replied.

A pause.

Then

"You never did."

The city flickered.

Cracks spread through the sky.

Something massive shifted in the distance too large to see fully, but enough to feel.

Pressure hit him.

Heavy.

Ancient.

"Do you remember what you sealed?"

Li Tian's chest tightened.

"No."

"Then you shouldn't be here."

The ground beneath him split.

The city began to collapse not violently, but like it was being erased.

Piece by piece.

The figures vanished first.

Then the buildings.

Then the sky.

Until only darkness remained.

Li Tian was thrown back.

He hit the ground hard, breath knocked out of him.

Mei Lin dropped beside him immediately. "Li Tian!"

He coughed, forcing air back into his lungs.

"I'm fine," he said, though his voice was rough.

Her eyes searched his. "What did you see?"

He sat up slowly.

"A place that shouldn't exist anymore," he said.

"And?"

He looked back at the tear.

It was still there.

But smaller now.

Less stable.

"They don't want me there yet," he said.

"Who?"

Li Tian's gaze hardened.

"The ones on the other side."

The System pulsed again.

[Memory Bleed Detected]

[Warning: External Entities Aware]

Mei Lin followed his gaze. "Can it close?"

"Yes."

"How?"

Li Tian stood.

"By finishing what I started," he said.

She didn't ask what that meant.

Because deep down

She already knew it wouldn't be simple.

Behind them, something moved in the trees.

Not like the observers.

Not silent.

Not patient.

This one had weight.

Intent.

And it was coming closer.

Li Tian's hand moved to his sword.

"This time," he said quietly, "it's not here to watch."

Mei Lin stepped beside him.

"Good," she replied.

The tear flickered.

The forest darkened.

And for the first time since all this began—

Something truly hostile stepped into their world.
