Chapter 1 - Prologue: The Whisper of Gaia

Christopher Thomas Green had always known there was something… different about himself. Something that set him apart from everyone else in the quiet corners of his world. Sanctuary pulsed beneath his feet, alive in a way that no ordinary land could be, and he could feel it. Every ripple of energy, every subtle shift, every minute change in the soil or air—it spoke to him. And he had always listened.

But nothing, not the hum of the forests, not the whispers of the rivers, had prepared him for her.

The voice came softly, impossibly gentle, yet filled every corner of the space he occupied.

"Christopher."

He froze, blinking at the empty air, his hand halfway to brushing a loose strand of hair from his forehead. The room was silent—too silent—except for the heartbeat of the world beneath him.

"Christopher, son of Gaia," the voice said again, richer this time, resonant in his chest as if it were speaking to more than just his ears. "You have watched many worlds. You have guided much life. But now… you must step beyond the limits of your own."

Christopher tilted his head, his usual wry smirk creeping onto his face despite the tension curling in his stomach. "Step beyond? You mean… like a field trip? Because if this involves homework, I might have to negotiate."

The voice laughed, soft and musical, the sound carrying warmth and patience. "Not homework, Christopher. This is… a calling. A guidance. You are to live another life in a world beyond your own. A life where your choices will ripple, where your heart will be tested, and where your humanity will matter more than your power."

He blinked. "A… world beyond my own? Wait, let me get this straight. You're telling me that, um… my powers, my forests, my little tree friends—they don't matter there?"

"They matter," the voice replied, now manifesting into presence. A soft glow bloomed in the corner of his room, illuminating the space with a gentle light. "But not as much as you will. You will be… reborn. Observing. Acting. Learning. And yes—living as they do."

Christopher's smirk softened, replaced by curiosity, the kind that always sparked when he encountered the strange and unknown. "Reborn, huh? Sounds like a vacation. Or a prank. Which one is it?"

The glow condensed, forming a figure that made even the floor beneath him feel alive. She stepped forward with a presence both warm and impossible to ignore. Her hair shimmered like sunlight reflecting on water, her eyes deep, infinite, holding the wisdom of eons. Gaia. His mother.

Christopher's chest tightened slightly, both in awe and in recognition. "Gaia," he breathed. "You… exist. You're actually here."

"I am always here," she said, her voice weaving through the very air, grounding him while filling him with awe. "I have watched you, Christopher. My son, my child. You are capable of much, yet the worlds you protect require you to walk among them, to truly understand them."

He leaned back against the wall of his room, smirking again. Humor, as always, was his shield against the unknown. "Walk among them, huh? Let me guess… high school, demons, angels, some ridiculous magic, and a lot of… social awkwardness?"

Gaia's lips curved into a faint, approving smile. "You see further than most. That is why you are chosen. Your heart, your mind, your humor… these are as important as any strength you possess. In this life, you will not only witness power—you will shape it, subtly, carefully, wisely."

Christopher chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Subtly shaping the flow of the universe… I like the sound of that. Kind of like nudging squirrels out of the way so they don't ruin the ecosystem, right?"

A soft laugh, like wind through leaves, answered him. "Yes, my son. You will guide, you will observe, and yes—you will use your nature in ways even you cannot yet comprehend. You will be human enough to laugh, to care, to falter. But strong enough to endure."

Christopher ran a hand through his hair, letting the warmth of her presence settle around him. "So… let me get this straight. I'm supposed to be all clever and strategic, but also… human? Flawed, funny, maybe a little ridiculous?"

"Exactly," Gaia said. "You are not meant to be a perfect god or an untouchable force. You are meant to live among those who are mortal, to understand them, to guide them, and to let your own heart lead."

He tilted his head, considering. "And if I… refuse?"

Gaia's expression softened, though the glow around her pulsed slightly. "You always have choice. But the world will call regardless. Fate favors those who act willingly, who embrace life and the responsibilities that come with it. You will step into this world whether you accept now or later—but your willingness will make all the difference."

Christopher's smirk returned, more confident, more mischievous. Humor, after all, had always been his way of processing the unimaginable. "Alright then. I accept. Observation, humor, patience, and… probably a few terrible jokes. That work for you?"

"It is perfect," Gaia said softly. Her gaze lingered on him, maternal and eternal. "In this world, you will walk among devils, angels, and fallen creatures. You will build trust, challenge them, protect them. But above all—you will remain yourself. Do not lose the heart that makes you human."

Christopher's eyes narrowed slightly, a faint glimmer of determination sparking. "Remain myself, huh? Humor intact, curiosity intact… slightly terrifying charm intact. Got it."

Gaia's smile was gentle, almost approving. "You will be ready. And when the time comes, the gateway will open. The world will not expect you. But it will need you. Always remember—your heart and your humor are your greatest tools."

The room began to shimmer with soft light, like the dawn spilling over the horizon. Christopher felt it: a gentle tug, stretching and pulling him toward something vast, unknown, alive. His pulse quickened. His mind, curious and sharp, raced with possibilities.

"Okay," he whispered, grin forming, half playful, half serious. "New world. New me. Let's see what kind of trouble they've got waiting for me this time."

The light enveloped him fully, warm and steady, humming like the pulse of Sanctuary itself.

"Be yourself, my son," Gaia's voice echoed as the last thread of her presence faded. "Always."

And then, everything shifted.

Sanctuary, forests, cliffs—all of it fell away.

Christopher Thomas Green, son of Gaia, protector, observer, and master of subtle humor, was gone.

In his place stood a boy reborn, stepping into a world of devils, angels, and all the chaos of High School DxD.

And the adventure—his new life—had begun.
