Chapter 194 — Thunder in the Clouds
High above Europe, the Quinjet cut through the clouds in steady flight.
The mission in Stuttgart had ended faster than expected. After several clashes and a brief but intense confrontation, Loki had surrendered. The sudden surrender still lingered in everyone's mind. It felt incomplete, as if something important had been left unsaid.
Inside the Quinjet, the atmosphere remained tense despite the success.
Loki sat restrained in a reinforced chair at the center of the cabin. Specialized bindings held his arms firmly in place. His posture was relaxed, almost casual, as though he were a guest rather than a prisoner. A faint smile rested on his face, one that never fully reached his eyes.
Natasha Romanoff piloted the aircraft from the front cockpit, her movements precise and calm. Steve Rogers stood nearby, arms crossed, watching Loki carefully. He did not trust the silence.
Outside the Quinjet, Tony Stark flew alongside the aircraft.
His massive armor moved smoothly through the air, matching the jet's speed without effort. The size of the suit made entering the Quinjet inconvenient. Even if he could fit inside, moving around would be difficult, and leaving quickly during an emergency would be worse.
So he stayed outside, gliding beside the aircraft like a silent escort.
Tony watched the jet while reviewing the mission in his mind.
Loki had fought.
Then he had simply… stopped.
No desperate escape attempt. No final trick. Just surrender.
Tony frowned slightly inside the helmet.
"Too easy," he muttered.
Normally, he would dig deeper into the problem, but there would be time later. Loki was captured. Interrogation would come next. They would learn where the Tesseract was hidden soon enough.
For now, the mission was complete.
Or at least, it should have been.
The clouds around them began to darken.
At first, Tony barely noticed. Storm systems were common at this altitude. But within seconds, lightning flashed far too close to the flight path.
Another bolt streaked across the sky.
Then another.
Tony slowed slightly, scanning the environment.
The storm wasn't moving naturally. The cloud formations twisted inward, gathering around the Quinjet instead of drifting past it.
"JARVIS," Tony said, his tone sharpening, "tell me I'm imagining this."
A brief pause followed.
Then the calm voice answered.
"Sir, atmospheric energy levels are rising unnaturally. The electrical activity does not match normal weather patterns."
Tony straightened mid-flight.
That was enough confirmation.
Something was coming.
He adjusted his trajectory, armor sensors expanding their scan range. The lightning grew brighter, louder, surrounding the aircraft in flashes of white light.
Then it happened.
A figure fell from above.
It dropped through the clouds at impossible speed and landed directly onto the roof of the Quinjet with a heavy impact that vibrated through the aircraft's frame.
Tony reacted instantly.
He accelerated forward, engines roaring as he surged ahead of the Quinjet. Within seconds, he intercepted the falling figure's position and turned to face it.
Lightning flashed again.
The silhouette became clear.
A tall man stood upright on the Quinjet's roof, unmoved by the rushing wind. A hammer rested firmly in his hand. Electricity danced across his armor and cloak, responding to his presence rather than the storm itself.
Tony recognized him immediately.
He landed in front of the figure, stabilizers locking him in place against the raging wind.
His armor amplified his voice so it could carry through the storm.
"Thor!"
The man looked up.
For a moment, tension filled the air. The pressure coming from Tony's massive armor was impossible to ignore. But then recognition crossed Thor's face.
"…Tony?"
Even through the helmet distortion, the voice was familiar.
Tony relaxed slightly.
"Good to see you too, Point Break."
The Quinjet continued flying steadily beneath them.
Tony opened a communication channel.
"Natasha," he said, "open the rear hatch."
Her voice came through immediately.
"Understood."
Moments later, the rear hatch of the Quinjet began to lower. Wind rushed into the cargo bay as the opening widened.
Tony turned toward Thor and said jokingly,
"Come on in before lightning hits us again."
Tony moved first, stepping into the aircraft. Even inside the larger cargo area, his height nearly reached the ceiling. He instinctively lowered his head while walking forward.
"That," Tony muttered aloud, "is exactly why I didn't enter this thing earlier."
Thor followed behind him, stepping into the Quinjet with ease.
The moment Thor entered, his eyes locked onto the restrained figure at the center of the cabin.
"Loki!"
The word carried both anger and relief.
Loki slowly lifted his head. A small, tense smile formed.
"My brother."
Thor stepped forward immediately, emotions rising. His grip tightened around Mjolnir as he moved closer.
Steve reacted at once, stepping between them.
"Easy," Steve said firmly.
Thor barely slowed.
Before the situation could escalate, Tony raised a hand.
"Calm down, Thor," Tony said. "We need him to locate the Tesseract."
Thor stopped.
He inhaled slowly, forcing himself to regain control.
"I am here to take Loki away," Thor said, voice steady but intense. "And to recover the Tesseract."
Steve nodded slightly. "Then follow us back."
Thor shook his head.
"No need. I can handle this."
Tony immediately cut in.
"Gaius is waiting for Loki too."
The effect was instant.
Thor froze.
The anger faded from his expression, replaced by thoughtfulness. Memories surfaced, the battle, the assistance given, the overwhelming presence of the warrior who had helped him and his friends.
Thor lowered his hammer slightly.
"…I see."
The tension inside the Quinjet eased.
Tony's faceplate snapped open with a soft mechanical sound.
"Since you've calmed down," Tony said, "what happened to you? Last I checked, you were hanging out with Selvig, Jane, and Darcy without your powers."
Thor let out a small breath and gave a strained smile.
"A great many things occurred," he said. "After learning Loki had been imprisoned in Asgard, I trained myself. I sought to regain my strength without relying on the hammer. Though I was not fully successful at first… the effort awakened my power once more."
There was pride in his voice, mixed with exhaustion from the journey.
Tony smiled slightly.
"Oh? I thought you were going to stay the god of sulking forever."
(refer to chapter 58)
Thor's expression darkened immediately.
Steve glanced between them, confused but recognizing the familiarity between the two.
The rest of the flight passed without incident.
Soon, the massive form of the Helicarrier appeared through the clouds.
The Quinjet descended toward the landing deck.
Below, personnel waited alongside unfamiliar armored figures, Gaius and his summoned warriors standing calmly as they observed the arrival.
The Quinjet landed smoothly.
The rear hatch opened again.
Tony stepped out first, ducking slightly as he passed through the doorway.
He shook his head.
"Still too small," he muttered.
Behind him, Thor exited while carrying the bound Loki effortlessly over one shoulder. Steve and Natasha followed after shutting down the aircraft systems.
Gaius watched silently.
For a brief moment, surprise crossed his eyes.
The last time he had seen Thor, the man had been powerless, little more than a strong mortal. Now, the difference was clear. The air itself seemed heavier around him. Confidence returned to his movements.
Thor approached with an awkward but confident smile.
"Gaius… was it?"
He said the name as if confirming a memory, yet his tone remained assured.
"I have awakened my powers once more and descended upon Midgard to capture the escapee Loki and reclaim the Tesseract."
Before Gaius could respond, Nick Fury stepped forward.
"Thor, God of Thunder," Fury said calmly. "We appreciate the help. But the Tesseract is property of S.H.I.E.L.D."
The atmosphere shifted instantly.
Agents nearby became alert.
Thor turned toward Fury.
"The Tesseract existed long before your organization," Thor said evenly. "My father, Odin, left it upon Midgard for reasons of his own. It belongs to Asgard."
His voice remained calm but carried firm certainty.
"We removed it to protect this world. If it remained here unguarded, Midgard would become visible to forces beyond your understanding."
