Chapter 22 - The Abyss Guardian

The pulse beneath their feet didn't fade this time. It deepened, growing heavier and more deliberate with every passing second, like the massive heartbeat of something ancient and colossal buried far below the chamber. What had started as a subtle vibration now thrummed through the ground with real intent, sending low, rhythmic waves up through their boots and into their bones. The faint lines running across the uneven surface lit up in dull violet patterns, spreading outward from somewhere deep within the crushing darkness like glowing cracks in reality itself. The warped pillars around them trembled slightly, shedding fine dust that never quite hit the ground—it simply dissolved midair, swallowed whole by the hungry environment as if the chamber refused to leave any evidence behind.

Ryuji stood perfectly still for a long moment, his trademark grin still plastered on his face—but thinner now, sharper, more focused. His body had shifted subtly without him even realizing it: weight balanced on the balls of his feet, shoulders loose and ready, breathing controlled and steady. His instincts had already dialed up to maximum, reading the room like a predator sensing a bigger predator nearby.

"…Yeah," he muttered, eyes gleaming in the low violet glow. "That's not a small one. This is gonna be good."

Kaelina didn't respond immediately. Her stance had lowered into a perfect combat crouch, blade angled forward with disciplined precision, her eyes scanning the impenetrable darkness ahead like she could will it to reveal its secrets. "Everyone stay together," she said quietly, voice cutting through the tension like a knife. "No one moves alone. Not even for a second."

Darek nodded grimly, tightening his massive grip on his greatsword until the hilt groaned in protest. "Wasn't planning to. I like my bones where they are."

Elrica's staff glowed brighter now, her mana output increasing despite the oppressive resistance from the environment fighting her every step. The light struggled hard, flickering at the edges like it was being choked, but she forced it to hold with sheer willpower. "I can feel it," she whispered, voice tight with awe and fear. "It's… huge. Bigger than anything we've faced."

Lumi hovered closer to Ryuji's shoulder, her usual chaotic, hyperactive energy replaced with something tighter, more controlled—almost professional dread. "That's not just a monster," she said, tiny voice serious. "That's a guardian. The dungeon's personal bouncer."

Ryuji glanced sideways at her, one eyebrow raised in that signature cocky way. "Boss fight?"

"…Yes."

His grin widened into something downright feral.

"Nice."

She groaned loudly, dragging both hands down her face. "Why do you always say that like it's Christmas morning?"

"Because it usually means good rewards. Big ones."

"You are going to die for loot one day, you absolute maniac."

"Worth it."

---

The darkness ahead shifted.

Not like before. Not subtle or sneaky.

Something enormous moved within it, displacing the shadows rather than blending into them. The faint outline of a monstrous shape emerged slowly, its sheer presence forcing the entire environment to react. The veins along the ground pulsed in frantic response, syncing perfectly with its movement, as if the whole chamber was bowing down and acknowledging its king.

Then it stepped forward.

The creature was massive.

Easily twice Darek's already impressive height, its form thick and heavily built like a living wall of pure muscle wrapped in layered armor that didn't look crafted by any blacksmith—it looked grown. Jagged plates of dark, chitinous material covered its body, overlapping unevenly like natural scales, each one threaded with glowing violet veins that pulsed like exposed arteries pumping corruption itself. Its head was partially armored, leaving only a narrow slit where two glowing purple eyes burned steadily with cold intelligence. Its arms were long and heavy, ending in massive clawed hands that scraped against the ground with every step, carving shallow grooves. In one hand, it carried a crude but terrifying weapon—a thick, jagged club reinforced with what looked like fused bone and stone, heavy enough to flatten a house.

The air around it warped slightly.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

Suffocating.

---

**Abyss Guardian – Lv.15**

---

Darek let out a slow, shaky breath. "…Yeah. That's definitely a problem. A big, angry, 'we're all going to die' kind of problem."

Elrica's voice trembled slightly, her knuckles white around her staff. "That's… not something we can fight head-on. We'd get crushed like bugs."

Kaelina didn't step back an inch. "We don't fight it head-on," she said calmly, already calculating. "We fight it smart. Precision. Teamwork. No mistakes."

Ryuji cracked his neck slowly, eyes locked on the hulking behemoth with pure delight. "…I can work with that."

Lumi pointed dramatically at the Guardian, her voice sharp and urgent. "That thing isn't just strong—it's reinforced by the dungeon itself. Every hit you take is going to hurt more than it should. Way more."

Ryuji flexed his hand, cracking his knuckles one by one.

"Good."

She groaned again, louder this time. "Why—just—why? Why are you like this?"

---

The Guardian moved first.

No roar. No dramatic battle cry. Just pure, terrifying movement.

It crossed half the distance between them in two heavy steps, the ground cracking loudly under its impossible weight as it raised its massive club and brought it down in a brutal overhead swing that could have leveled a building.

Kaelina reacted instantly. "Move!"

The team scattered like leaves in a hurricane.

The impact hit the ground with a thunderous crash that shook the entire chamber, sending a powerful shockwave outward that fractured the floor and threw sharp debris in every direction. The force alone was enough to knock Elrica off balance, forcing her to brace desperately with her staff to avoid getting flung like a ragdoll.

"…Yeah," Darek muttered, eyes wide. "That would've killed me. Instantly."

"Focus!" Kaelina snapped, already darting back into the fight.

She moved in from the side with blinding speed, her blade flashing toward the Guardian's exposed joint like silver lightning. The strike connected—

But barely.

The armor resisted fiercely, absorbing most of the impact with a dull clang.

"…Too tough," she muttered, already retreating.

The Guardian swung again, faster this time, forcing her to disengage in a desperate roll.

---

Ryuji moved in next.

He didn't rush blindly like a fool. He circled slowly.

Watching.

Measuring.

Learning.

The Guardian turned toward him immediately, its glowing purple eyes locking on with laser focus. There was no hesitation in its movement—it tracked him perfectly, like a machine built for murder.

"…Yeah," he muttered, almost impressed. "It's locked in. Full aggro on me. Love it."

Lumi floated beside him, wings buzzing frantically. "Of course it is. You're the anomaly here!"

"Fan club's growing fast."

"This is NOT a fan club! This is a death sentence!"

---

The Guardian lunged.

Faster than something that size had any right to be.

Its clawed hand shot forward like a wrecking ball, aiming to grab him outright and crush the life from him.

Ryuji stepped in.

Not back.

In.

His fist drove forward with perfect timing.

**CRACK.**

Bone Breaker triggered on impact with explosive force.

But—

The reaction was different this time.

The Guardian's arm didn't snap.

It barely even moved.

Ryuji's eyes narrowed slightly, a spark of respect flashing across his face. "…Yeah. That's solid. Real solid."

The counter came instantly.

The Guardian swung its massive club sideways in a devastating arc.

Ryuji barely managed to block, raising both arms just in time as the impact slammed into him like a freight train, sending him skidding backward across the ground with tremendous force.

His boots dug deep into the surface, carving trenches until he stopped just before colliding with one of the warped pillars.

"…Okay," he muttered, rolling his shoulder with a wince. "That one counts. Solid hit."

Lumi stared at him in disbelief. "You just got hit by a walking fortress!"

"And I'm still standing. That's progress."

"That's not the point!"

---

"Ryuji!" Kaelina called sharply.

He looked up.

She moved.

Fast.

Precise.

Her blade struck again, this time targeting a thinner section between the armor plates. The strike landed cleanly, forcing the Guardian to shift its attention with a low growl.

"Darek—now!" she shouted.

Darek didn't hesitate for a heartbeat.

He charged forward like a battering ram, his greatsword swinging in a powerful arc that crashed into the same weakened spot Kaelina had targeted. The combined impact forced the Guardian to stagger half a step backward.

"…There we go!" Darek grinned fiercely.

Elrica raised her staff high. "Mana burst!"

A concentrated blast of brilliant light struck the Guardian's chest, forcing it back another full step with a hiss of steam.

Ryuji's grin returned full force.

"Alright."

"Now we're playing."

---

He moved again.

This time faster.

More aggressive.

He closed the distance while the Guardian was still recovering, stepping boldly inside its deadly range before it could fully reset its stance.

His fist drove forward.

Then again.

Then again.

Each hit wasn't just raw force—it was smart placement.

Testing.

Finding weaknesses.

The Guardian swung down at him with killing intent—

He slipped to the side with fluid grace, letting the attack crash uselessly into the ground behind him.

Then he countered hard.

**BOOM.**

Shockwave Punch detonated directly into the damaged section of armor.

The impact echoed through the chamber like thunder.

The Guardian's body jerked slightly.

Cracks formed.

Small—

But real.

"…Yeah," Ryuji muttered, breathing steady. "That works. Keep cracking."

---

The Guardian roared.

Not loud and theatrical.

But deep.

The sound vibrated through the entire chamber, distorting the air itself and making everyone's teeth rattle.

Then it moved faster.

Its attacks became more aggressive, less measured, swinging in wide, devastating arcs that forced everyone to stay in constant motion. The ground cracked further with each earth-shaking impact, the environment itself breaking under the sheer pressure of the fight.

Kaelina adjusted immediately, switching from direct strikes to perfect support positioning. She intercepted attacks meant for Elrica, redirected the Guardian's deadly attention when needed, and created clean openings for Ryuji and Darek with surgical precision.

Darek focused entirely on heavy, crushing hits, timing his powerful swings with Ryuji's movements instead of forcing his own rhythm, turning their attacks into devastating combos.

Elrica shifted completely into support, using targeted bursts of light and mana to disrupt the Guardian's movement and vision rather than trying to damage it directly.

The team wasn't just fighting anymore.

They were syncing. Becoming something greater together.

---

Ryuji noticed.

And grinned wider than ever.

"Not bad," he muttered under his breath.

Lumi blinked in surprise. "…You're complimenting them? Actually complimenting?"

"They're keeping up. Impressive."

"I'm telling everyone you said that the second we get out."

"Don't."

"Too late."

---

The Guardian slammed its club down again with apocalyptic force.

Ryuji jumped forward this time, using the massive impact as momentum, pushing off the fractured ground and launching himself upward like a rocket.

He twisted mid-air with perfect control.

Then drove his fist downward.

**BOOOOM.**

Shockwave Punch landed directly onto the cracked armor with devastating power.

The impact shattered part of it completely.

Fragments broke away and dissolved.

Exposing something beneath.

Dark.

Pulsing.

Alive.

Ryuji landed lightly on his feet, eyes locked on the exposed core with hungry focus.

"…There you are."

---

"Hit that!" Lumi snapped instantly.

"Was planning to. Thanks for the tip."

The Guardian reacted violently.

Its movements became erratic, faster, and far more aggressive as it tried desperately to protect the newly exposed area.

Kaelina stepped in again without hesitation, her blade flashing in a rapid series of strikes that forced its attention away from Ryuji.

"Darek!"

"On it!"

Darek's greatsword slammed into the Guardian's leg with bone-crushing force, forcing it to shift its stance awkwardly.

Elrica unleashed another brilliant burst of light, blinding it momentarily.

Ryuji moved.

Straight in.

No hesitation. No fear.

He stepped boldly inside its guard.

Ignored the incoming swing completely.

And drove his fist forward with everything he had.

**CRACK.**

Bone Breaker triggered again—

This time—

It worked perfectly.

The exposed structure beneath the armor fractured violently.

The Guardian staggered.

For real this time.

Ryuji's grin widened triumphantly.

"There we go."

---

He didn't stop.

Another punch.

Another.

Then—

**BOOOOOM.**

Shockwave Punch detonated point-blank into the core.

The exposed core shattered completely.

The Guardian's body froze mid-motion.

Then cracked all over.

Then—

Collapsed.

Its massive form crumbled inward with a deafening crash, breaking apart into fragments of dark material that dissolved into nothing before they could even hit the ground.

Silence followed, thick and heavy.

---

Darek exhaled heavily, leaning on his sword. "…That was insane. Absolutely insane."

Elrica lowered her staff, breathing uneven and ragged. "We… we did it… I can't believe we actually did it…"

Kaelina sheathed her sword slowly, her eyes still scanning the chamber warily. "…Barely. That was too close."

Ryuji rolled his shoulders casually, completely relaxed again like he'd just finished a light workout.

"…That was fun."

Lumi stared at him in utter disbelief.

"…You need help. Professional help."

"Probably."

---

Then—

The ground pulsed again.

But this time—

Not violently.

Slow.

Deep.

From much further inside the darkness.

Ryuji's grin returned instantly, eyes sparkling with fresh excitement.

"…Oh."

Lumi closed her eyes briefly, sighing in defeat.

"…There's more."

Kaelina's hand moved back to her sword hilt.

"Of course there is."

Ryuji cracked his knuckles loudly.

"Good."

Because the deeper they went—

The stronger it got.

And he was starting to enjoy it way too much.
