Chapter 13 - Sunset

Amidst their tears, the villagers saw the blood around them change color. It turned to muddy brown as the greenish liquid the snakes had spat mixed with it.

Then, they saw the blood all around them begin to produce bubbles. It was a scene as if the blood was boiling. The scavenger remains of the beasts and the bodies of the wolves started crumbling.

Bit by bit they scattered throughout the entire hilltop, floating in the sea of blood.

The villagers couldn't help but shrink back towards the center, hoping to avoid the blood of their "kin". They couldn't bear to touch what was left of the wolves. They couldn't bear to touch what was left of the beasts they had slain. They were in a state of grief. Crying, wailing, fallen to the knees and overwhelmed by guilt. Their feet had already been wet by the brown blood around them.

They could only bite their lips and muffle their sobs as they stared at their feet below. Their hearts had been wrenching. This was their grief. Unnatural, yet entirely true.

Blind to their misery, the sea around continued its macabre play. It soon melted the flesh and bones it had crumbled prior. The boiling muddy brown blood turned red again, getting only darker with each second.

As the blood continued boiling, a dark red haze started leaving its surface. It started becoming more and more dense as the thick blood sea kept decreasing.

The haze turned into a whirpool, circling around the villagers like a beast ogling its prey. It started coming closer and closer to the villagers not stopping its whirling for even a moment. Then it stopped, stood like tall walls around them and then, rushed to the center, drowning the villagers.

The haze permeated their skin, entering into their bodies. It drew into their lungs as they breathed. And it nourished their hairs as it swept past their scalps.

The haze was suffocating though. And thus, people started coughing. Some started itching and some even had their eyes become blood red.

The villagers had long stopped crying, their grief, lightened. Only staying with them like a whisper. They had now inturn, been overwhelmed by pain.

They felt their chests burn, their eyes squeeze, their skins being pierced by a thousand needles and their hair being pulled by some madmen.

That was why, more than half of the villagers had already fainted and the remaining ones had been sprawled on the ground, writhing in pain and agaony.

The screaming of the children, the wailing of the women, the shouts of the men. All the voices mixed to create a lullaby making some people plop to the ground, hitting onto their weapons, causing instant death.

The ones that had fainted before stood awake using their weapons to end their own lives. Blood flowed again and the grass was dyed red again.

The blood started crumbling the bodies it had been shed from. The pieces started mixing in the blood and then soon started melting. The blood thickened giving a pungent smell.

The people that were sprawled on the ground couldn't stop the blood from seething into their mouths. The blood seemed to have a life of its own. It started rushing into the mouths of people faster and faster, choking them along the way.

Some of the blood even spilled back from their nostrils. It was a terrifying sight. The cries of the people had turned into muffled groans, silenced by the blood.

People started dying one by one. Their lifeless bodies losing all color, turning grey and then ground into dust by the blood inside them.

With no vessel to contain it, the blood gushed out again, only much thicker this time.

The remaining people had begun to come to their senses. They had no energy left in them, drained by the feelings of grief, pain, anger and helplessness. They had lost strength in their arms and their vision had been blurred, both from tears as well as their own blood.

Sweat, tears, snot, saliva, mud and blood all been mixed together. Their clothes dirtied and a repulsive smell emanating from their bodies.

They saw their surroundings only to find a sea of blood. There were no apes, monekys, boars, snakes or even cats. Their bodies had all disappeared, turned into mist and mixed into the blood of the living.

What they saw instead was the blood of their own people, the fellows who had been living a breathing, crying in pain moments ago. They were the people whom they had shed blood and tears with during the battle before. They were no more, turned into blood by whatever had caused all this.

Edith, Horus, Carla, Jenny, Brachus, Astus, Rinnie and Fortis. Even Rose. Everyone was gone. Not even a sign of them left.

Edith knew very well though thaf the missing were still present around him. In the form of blood and meat that ebbed and flowed. They couldn't feel anything anymore. They could cry no more. Washing against the living, they were lifeless.

Edith then saw the blood start boiling. Soon, it started turning into a bright red mist. Its light cast a shadow on ground, dying the people it had been shed from red.

As the mist rose, the surroundings became veiled in its bright red body. The mist then whirpooled around Edith, slowly seeping towards him and mixing into his breaths.

Winds howled, and grass blades fluttered. The grass turned green again. The blood on it being washed away.

The blood entered his breaths, entered his skins and seeped into him through his eyes and ears.

Edith convulsed in pain, attempting to scream but his mouths failing to produce a sound. His wails were shared by only one similar screams. Just as intense as his, but quite squeaky.

His arms and legs twitched and his chest started beating loudly. His eyes turned blind and his ears deaf.

The sounds of muscles being torn and bones being crushed resounded. Followed by the noise their eventual healing soon brought.

The veil of mist dimmed, as it was absorbed into his body causing him to faint.

His hair became white, his frail body gradually regaining strength.

Edith lying deep asleep. Any signs of the massacre that had occured disappearing. There was not even a trace of blood on the ground. No flesh remained and the cool breeze began to caress his body.

Edith weakly opened his eyes to look at the sky. The day had ended, the sun had set. It was dark. He closed his eyes.

Opening them again, Edith found himself in a horsecart swaying gently. He had dreamt of the past once again. It had been almost a month since that incident.

He looked at the people in the cart, giving a wistful sigh. Even today, it was dark outside as the sun had set.
