Chapter 45 - The Full Story

I watched Christian disappear into Krista's room, a tray laden with breakfast in his hands. I'd prepared most of it myself, hoping the familiar scents of home-cooked food might offer some small comfort after the harrowing day and restless night. She had barely touched dinner, the mental strain clearly taking its toll. My heart ached knowing she was in there, lost in fragments of a past she couldn't grasp. I stayed close, my pureblood hearing stretched, straining to catch any sound from within.

Silence for a moment, then Christian's warm, inviting voice. I heard Krista's quiet response, her tone calm, but with an underlying tension. She's going to ask him something important.

Then, her voice, clear despite its softness: "Can I ask you something?"

Christian's immediate, reassuring reply: "Of course. You can ask me anything."

My senses sharpened, every nerve ending alert. This was it.

"What happened between us?" Her question was a raw, exposed wound. "A little while ago I recalled something. I think it was the night I left. In my memory, Kai told me that it was wrong to be together. He told me friendship between humans and vampires is impossible, that we're enemies. And before I woke up today, I saw another memory. I saw myself asking him to stay. I saw him promising me he'd come back. Will you tell me what happened?"

My breath hitched. She remembered the pain. The crushing, soul-shattering moment I pushed her away. And the desperate, foolish promise I made right before the Convention. Every word she spoke was a fresh stab to my chest, reliving the agony of that night.

I heard Christian's deep sigh. He must have walked to the window, the way he always did when he was gathering his thoughts. Then his slow, measured words began to fill the quiet hall. "That memory of him telling you he'd come back was probably the night before we went to the Vampire Convention. It's an annual gathering where the top vampire clans meet and talk about plans for the future and all."

"And you all went there," Krista stated, her voice imbued with a sadness that surprised even me, hearing it from outside the door. "Then when you came back later, we were no longer friends?"

Christian sighed again, heavier this time. "Don't hate him." My ears pricked at that, a wave of desperate hope washing over me. "I shouldn't be telling you this. But, I don't think I can keep it anymore."

"What is it? Tell me." Her voice was urgent, demanding.

And then, Christian laid bare the truth I had carried like a lead weight in my soul for seventeen years. He spoke of my father, the Council leader, and his discovery of our forbidden dates. He explained the worst crime: a relationship between human and vampire. He detailed my futile attempts to fight for her, my desperate reasoning with my father. He recounted the Council leader's agitation, his suspicions of the Church's machinations, and the chilling thought that Krista was merely a spy. He spoke of my house arrest, the Elite guards, my failed escapes. And finally, the ultimate ultimatum that had shattered my world: "The Council leader told him he'd have you killed if he doesn't cut ties with you. He told the five of us to stop hanging out with you or things will end badly."

I leaned against the wall, my hand pressed to my chest. The familiar pain, sharp and suffocating, flared. Hearing Christian recount it, hearing it reach her ears, felt like reliving the betrayal, the impossible choice all over again. My heart twisted in an agony that rivaled that night.

"Are you telling the truth?" Krista's voice was barely a whisper, dumbfounded, her mind reeling.

"Of course I am. I will never lie to you," Christian replied, his sincerity unwavering. "We didn't want you to get hurt. You are our dearest friend, our only human friend."

A muffled sob. I knew she was crying. My tears started to fall, Christian's words confirming the raw wound in her heart, a thorn now being pulled. She was overwhelmed, and so was I.

"Enough. I've heard enough," Krista said, her voice strained, a plea for the pain to stop. "I don't feel good. I'll go back to sleep." I heard the door open and close, Christian's footsteps receding.

I waited until the house was quiet again, then moved silently towards her door. I couldn't bring myself to enter, but I could feel the tempest raging within. I could sense the chaotic storm of emotions that must have been tearing through her. I knew the confession had hit her hard.

Inside, she must have closed her eyes, seeking solace from the overwhelming truth, but instead, I felt a tremor, a subtle psychic ripple that indicated a mind under immense strain. The air in the house seemed to thicken, charged with a sudden, powerful energy. Then, a sharp jolt. I heard a muffled gasp from within her room.

Silence fell, profound and almost terrifying. I sensed a monumental shift in her presence, an undeniable change. It felt as if a vast, empty space had suddenly been filled, or a long-dormant power had awoken within her. A profound, unsettling certainty settled deep in my bones: something fundamentally, irrevocably, had changed.
