Chapter 51 - A Father's Claim

A profound silence descended upon the grand library, heavier than any that had come before. Our friends, who knew the gravity of this secret, visibly braced themselves for an uproar. The Council members, the most powerful and traditional vampires, were utterly frozen, their expressions shifting from surprise to a desperate attempt to process this monumental revelation. I watched my father's face, steeling myself for the worst - anger, disgust, condemnation for such a violation of our laws. But the worst didn't come.

A slow smile spread across his face, a genuine warmth I rarely saw. "I knew it. He reminds me so much of myself when I was young." He even chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound that filled the room. "I was a handsome lad."

"Of course you were, darling," my mother, Lady Anastacia, interjected, a soft smile on her lips as she indulged him. Then, her gaze, filled with an unexpected tenderness and remorse, turned to Krista. "It must have been really difficult for you to have raised your son on your own. Kai went looking for you after you disappeared. It was the first time I saw him broken. Although he's not saying it, my husband feels remorseful for keeping you apart. It was one of the biggest mistakes we've made. But it was for a good reason. Kai is our only son. We only wanted to protect him. Will you forgive us for prioritizing his safety?"

I held my breath, a tightness in my chest. This was an unprecedented apology from the proud, unyielding leaders of our kind.

"No, of course not. If it had been me, I'd probably do the same," Krista answered, her voice soft but sincere, acknowledging their pain. "You're right, after all. What we had was against the law. We'd never make the same mistake again. After everything's over, I'm leaving with my son."

"No, you're not!" I protested instantly, stepping forward, my voice raw with a desperate urgency. The thought of losing her again, after everything, was unbearable. "You're not leaving me again."

"It's for the best. If the others find out about it, the laws that we've been upholding will crumble," Krista explained, her eyes filled with a painful resignation. "We'd set a bad example, and many will think they can go against the law anytime."

"Then I'm leaving with you," I declared, my resolve absolute. If she went, I would follow.

"No, you can't," she countered immediately, shaking her head. "Once everything's over, the Church might be dissolved and the future of the capital will be on the Council's shoulders. Everything will be in chaos, and people are going to be in a state of confusion. They'll need you here."

"Then, shouldn't you stay as well?" Christian asked, his gaze earnest. "The humans will need a leader."

"I'm no leader. And I doubt they'd follow me. I am a fugitive, after all." She then turned to my father, her decision seemingly final. "I'll leave everyone in your hands by then."

"I understand. But let's win this war first," my father said in a low, gentle voice, accepting her terms, for now.

Seraphina then asked my Father. "What about the Church officials and the staff at the research facility. What do we do about them?"

"We arrest them. They have the right for a proper trial," my father said, his voice firm on the rule of law.

"A proper trial? After what they've done?" Seraphina scoffed.

"Yes. Despite that, they're high-ranking officials. We must solve things properly."

"Fine. But it won't be our fault if they accidentally get killed in battle." She tossed her beautiful blonde hair over her shoulder and walked away, a dangerous glint in her eyes.

"It's late. You should all stay here," my mother offered warmly, her gaze sweeping over our group. "We must start preparations tomorrow."

"Thank you, but I need to go back to Father Sinclair," Maria said, stepping forward. "We should start with our own preparations as well." She said her goodbyes to the Council and quickly left for the underground group, her resolve clear.

The rest of us accepted my mother's offer and stayed for the night. The castle, despite the late hour, was already bustling. Vampires from various clans and districts were arriving, summoned for the emergency conference. The speed of their arrival indicated the deep agitation running through our kind. We were given rooms in the east wing, a more secluded area, away from the noisy great hall where the leaders were already convening. The hallway was deserted, most of the castle staff either assisting the guests or preparing a feast for the busy vampires in the kitchens.

The Council had agreed. The alliance was formed. The war preparations were about to begin.
