Chapter 50 - Angel's Farewell

Complete silence hung over the arena.

Holwas's body lay crumpled against the bloodstained stone, his eyes still frozen in that final moment of terror. Not a single spectator moved. Not a single breath escaped the thousands who had filled the colosseum moments before. They had come to witness death, but not like this. Not the death of the man who had ruled these games for decades. Not at the hands of a boy who had risen from the dead.

Then, a single clap echoed through the stillness.

Another followed. Then another. Within seconds, the entire audience erupted into cheers and applause. To them, nothing had changed. Holwas was dead, but the show had been magnificent. The boy who had defied death itself had delivered the greatest performance in arena history. They didn't care about the blood soaking the sand. They didn't care about the bodies scattered across the floor. They only cared that they had been entertained.

The Shadow slowly turned toward the audience. Her crimson eyes swept across the cheering masses, taking in every face, every smile, every raised fist celebrating what they believed to be nothing more than a spectacle. She placed a hand over Klen's heart, quietly checking the vessel. Still intact. Still breathing. Still alive.

Her gaze drifted toward the arena entrance, where Marna and Eira lay unconscious, forgotten by the chaos. Gentle shadow tendrils extended from her body, lifting the two girls with impossible care and carrying them beyond the arena walls to safety. The spectators didn't notice. They were too busy celebrating.

Before looking back at them, the Shadow whispered softly to herself: "I'm sorry... for what I'm about to do."

She snapped her fingers.

Shadow tendrils erupted throughout the arena.

The cheering stopped. The celebrations died. Confusion flickered across the faces of the nobles as darkness spread across the stone walls like living ink. Then the tendrils began to move. They didn't strike indiscriminately. They hunted. Every moving person inside the arena became a target.

Guards attempted to defend the nobles. Their swords passed harmlessly through the shadows. Nobles screamed and scrambled for the exits, but the tendrils were already there, blocking every path. Families wept. Friends abandoned one another. The cheering that had filled the arena moments before gradually turned into panic, and the panic turned into screams.

The Shadow simply watched.

She laughed.

Not maliciously. Not cruelly. Joyfully. Relief poured from her like water breaking through a dam. She had finally protected him. After years of watching from the shadows, after years of helplessness, she had finally been able to intervene. She had finally been able to save him.

Then her smile slowly disappeared.

The screams faded into silence as the tendrils completed their work. Bodies lay scattered across the arena floor, their blood mingling with the rain that had begun to fall. The Shadow stood among them, her crimson eyes fixed on nothing in particular. She remembered.

The torture. The missing eye. The broken fingers. Every wound. Every scream. Every moment she had been forced to watch as Holwas carved pieces from Klen's body.

Her expression became empty. Cold.

"Die," she commanded quietly. "Filthy mortals. No one will save you."

The massacre ended. Silence returned, broken only by the soft patter of rain against stone. The Shadow suddenly dropped to her knees. Tears began falling from her crimson eyes, cutting tracks through the blood splattered across her face.

She broke down.

"I was too weak..." Her voice cracked. "I couldn't save you... Even in this reincarnation..."

The realization was devastating. She considered herself responsible for Klen's suffering. Every scar, every wound, every moment of agony—she blamed herself. She had watched him suffer for years, unable to intervene, unable to protect him. And even now, even after everything, he had nearly died.

She separated herself from Klen's body. Her true physical form appeared, standing beside his unconscious vessel. She walked over and gently lifted his head onto her lap, cradling him like a mother holding her child. Her fingers moved through his white hair, tracing soothing patterns across his scalp. She ran her fingers across his cheek, feeling the warmth of his skin beneath her touch.

A quiet smile crossed her face. "Soon," she whispered. "I won't have to watch from afar anymore. My beloved."

She carefully laid his head back down and rose to her feet. Her eyes found Holwas's corpse, still lying where he had fallen. Darkness gathered around his body, coalescing into a black crystal that slowly formed above his chest. She reached out and took it. Her fingers closed around the crystal, crushing it into dust. The darkness returned to her, flowing into her body like water returning to the sea.

She closed her eyes, feeling more complete than she had in centuries. "Only a few remain," she murmured.

The sky darkened. Clouds gathered overhead, thick and heavy with an unnatural presence. Red rain began falling from the heavens, staining the arena floor like tears of blood. The Shadow lifted Klen into her arms, cradling him against her chest. She began to dance. No audience. No music. Only red rain falling around them like a blessing.

For the first time in countless years, she was celebrating. Her manifestation. Her freedom. Her beloved, finally safe in her arms.

She stopped dancing and looked back once at the ruined arena. She snapped her fingers. The ancient structure groaned, cracks spreading across its walls like spiderwebs. Then it collapsed, burying Holwas and everything he had built beneath tons of stone and rubble. She and Klen disappeared, leaving only falling rain behind.

They arrived in a quiet forest, far from the city and its horrors. The Shadow gently placed Klen beneath a large tree, his head resting against the roots. She knelt beside him and whispered, "Stay here. I'll return."

She teleported to a small cottage on the edge of a village. Inside, two woodcutters tended to a girl barely clinging to life. Lyra. They had found her at the bottom of a cliff, broken and bleeding, her body battered beyond recognition. The woodcutters feared she wouldn't survive the night.

After they left to fetch more supplies, the Shadow appeared beside Lyra's bed. She looked at the girl with pity, her crimson eyes softening. "Poor child..." She placed a hand over Lyra's chest and transferred a portion of her darkness into the dying girl. Lyra's wounds began to close. Her breathing steadied. The Shadow teleported her beside Klen in the forest.

She retrieved Marna next, then Eira. One by one, she placed them beside Klen and Lyra beneath the tree. For the first time, everyone important to him was together. Safe. Alive.

The Shadow entered Klen's subconscious one final time. She found him sleeping peacefully, his features relaxed for the first time in years. She floated toward him quietly, her form shimmering in the darkness of his mind. She knelt beside him and gently patted his face.

"Wake up."

She watched him one final time, her smile soft and tender. Then she disappeared completely, keeping the promise she had made in the room he was captured in. She would no longer haunt his dreams.

Klen opened his eyes.

He wasn't in the forest. He was inside an unfamiliar room, luxurious and warm, with soft light filtering through gauze curtains. His body felt heavy, but whole. No pain. No wounds. He pushed himself upright slowly, his eyes scanning the room.

His breath caught.

Marna. Eira. Lyra.

All alive. All sleeping peacefully in beds arranged around the room. Their chests rose and fell with steady, even breaths. Color had returned to their faces. They were safe.

Klen instinctively reached out with his mind. "Shadow?" he called silently.

No answer.

"Shadow?"

Nothing.

For the first time in years, his mind was completely silent. She was gone. The weight of the realization settled over him like a blanket. He walked over to Lyra's bed, his legs unsteady. He gently touched her hand, feeling the warmth of her skin beneath his fingers. She breathed peacefully, alive.

Every emotion he had buried throughout the entire journey exploded within him. The fear. The anger. The desperation. The hope. The relief. He fell to his knees beside her bed, his shoulders shaking. Tears poured from his eyes, streaming down his cheeks and soaking into the sheets. He cried uncontrollably, not because he was weak, but because they were alive. After everything, they were alive.

The door opened.

A boy around Klen's age walked inside, his expression warm and curious. He had dark hair and kind eyes, and he carried himself with an easy confidence that seemed out of place in such a somber moment. He smiled.

"So," he said gently. "You're finally awake."
