Chapter 557 - Chapter 435

Dark energy vented upward through the fracture, forcing nearby cultivators to withdraw before the unstable flow struck them. The central gate connection lost its balance at the same time, and the seals covering the enormous doors began flickering in different sections rather than as one synchronized pattern. Some remained active, others dimmed, and several locking structures embedded in the walls began carrying loads that had previously been distributed through the full network.

Haotian stepped away from the broken section as the coalition pressed closer.

"Destroy the remaining controls."

The order did not cause the formations to scatter. Specialists moved forward behind the fighters already holding the demons away from the damaged structures, working only on the exposed connections within reach of the advance. Pyrelith cultivators broke weakened formation supports, while Yinxue, Ziyue, Lianhua, and Yueru severed the smaller channels the demons were attempting to use as replacements. Yanfei remained selective with Frostfire, striking damaged structural points rather than covering the area in unnecessary attacks.

The defenders continued fighting while they withdrew from the broken command position. Heavy companies shortened their lines by sections, and stronger officers covered the formation masters who were still trying to preserve portions of the gate system. They no longer possessed enough intact connections to restore the original network, but several local locks were still functioning independently. Their efforts prevented the gates from opening even after the main seals lost synchronization.

Haotian allowed retreating companies to move deeper into the stronghold whenever they stopped blocking the coalition's objective. The mixed legions did not leave the direction of advance to pursue them through side roads or damaged compounds. Every cultivator who withdrew away from the gates ceased to matter to the immediate operation, while every intact locking structure in front of the coalition still had to be removed before the army could leave.

The left gate shifted first.

The movement was small, only several inches, but it sent a deep vibration through the adjoining wall as the remaining locks took the sudden change in load. Dust fell from the upper stonework, and one of the surviving formation patterns across the gate distorted as its alignment changed. The demons nearest the structure looked back briefly before returning their attention to the coalition.

Haotian moved toward the physical locking mechanisms beneath that side.

The controls were unfamiliar Abyss structures, and neither he nor the specialists attempted to operate them. Instead, the Dao of the Universe traced which reinforced pieces were still physically carrying the weight of the seal. Two locking arms remained engaged despite the collapse of the larger formation network, one exposed near the damaged foundation and another buried more deeply inside the gate support.

Xiangyin reached the first with him. Her spear struck repeatedly against the same damaged joint, each impact widening fractures that had already formed when the formation network failed. The locking arm resisted the first several blows before the reinforced material finally gave way and one end dropped from its housing.

The gate moved farther.

The second lock required Haotian to reach into the broken foundation itself. He followed the stress lines through the surrounding reinforcement and struck at the narrow point where the locking arm transferred its force into the larger support. The first impact damaged the connection without breaking it, while the second drove deeper through the weakened structure and separated the arm from the mechanism holding it in place.

A narrow seam opened between the left gate and the opposite door.

Outside air entered through it.

The coalition did not surge toward the opening.

Xuanyin kept the deeper formations in order while scouts continued watching every interior road leading toward the district. Wounded cultivators remained within the protected ranks, healers stayed with them, and reserves maintained their positions rather than moving toward the gates simply because the outside had become visible.

The right gate remained more firmly secured.

Its primary seal had weakened with the rest of the network, but several physical supports had survived in better condition than those on the left. Haotian shifted the battle march toward that side while the specialists continued destroying exposed formation connections along the walls. The defenders still present around the right gate pulled back into a narrower position because there was no longer enough manpower to hold the full district.

Lianhua and Yinxue pressured the strongest section of that defense until the demons gave enough ground for the coalition to reach the locking structure. Yueru and Ziyue remained close enough to prevent formation masters from rebuilding the smaller channels behind the line, while Tianlan held the side approach with compact spear movements that did not demand unnecessary force from his wrapped arm. The Frost Rainbow Falcons stayed above the gate district, descending only when elevated attackers tried to strike into the formations below.

Haotian reached the first surviving lock on the right side and examined the structure before attacking it. The gate itself carried enormous weight, and simply striking the strongest material would have wasted cultivation while damaging little of what actually held it closed. He found the supporting relationship beneath the lock and drove force into the point where several reinforced pieces converged.

The joint fractured.

Pyrelith cultivators widened the damage around it while the family kept the remaining defenders from reaching the specialists. The second support failed soon afterward, not through one overwhelming attack but through repeated strikes against material already carrying more stress than it had before the main gate network collapsed.

The right gate shifted.

Both doors were now held primarily by their own weight, damaged foundations, and the remaining pieces of the locking structures rather than by an intact sealing system. Haotian ordered the coalition to continue removing those obstructions until the opening was wide enough for formations to pass safely. No one attempted to preserve the mechanisms for later use.

The gates moved gradually as the damaged supports gave way.

Stone ground against stone beneath them, and fragments broke from the lower foundations where the doors no longer followed their original alignment. Cultivators near the front used controlled force against the weakened structures, widening the opening without rushing so far ahead that the deeper army lost contact with them. The gap eventually became wide enough that several people could stand abreast between the doors, then wider still as the remaining resistance beneath the foundations broke apart.

The land outside the stronghold came fully into view.

Haotian remained inside the gate district while the coalition secured the opening. The surviving demonic companies had withdrawn far enough into the base that they no longer threatened the immediate front, but Umbrel scouts continued tracking them in case they attempted to regroup for another attack. Celestara cultivators checked the elevated positions around the walls, while Veridian specialists confirmed that no intact underground route opened directly beneath the path the coalition would use to leave.

The front defensive district had not vanished. Towers still stood, sections of wall remained intact, and demonic troops were still alive deeper inside the base. What had changed was the system that had allowed those structures to function together as the stronghold's front line. The gate network had been broken, the outward-facing formations had lost much of their support, and the defenders who had tried to reverse the district against Haotian had been forced away from the structures they were protecting.

The coalition had reached the front from inside and removed what kept it closed.

With the opening secured, Xuanyin began preparing the army to move through it in order.

The opening between the main gates was wide enough for the coalition to pass, but Xuanyin did not allow the army to move through it until the immediate area had been checked again. The collapse of the gate network had disabled most of the formations tied directly to the front defensive system, yet damaged Abyss structures still carried unstable energy through several sections of the walls and foundations. A formation that appeared inactive could still release whatever power remained trapped inside it if the damaged channels shifted under the weight of thousands of cultivators passing nearby. The coalition had already survived the difficult part of the assault, and there was no reason to accept unnecessary losses simply because the outside was now visible.

Veridian specialists moved first along the ground surrounding the opening, examining the damaged roads and the underground branches that approached the gate district. They did not descend into every tunnel or attempt to clear the entire subterranean network, because most of those routes had no connection to the path the army would actually use. Their attention stayed on the sections beneath and immediately beside the gates, where a hidden formation, collapse, or surviving enemy group could interfere with the march out. Several damaged passages were found, but none remained stable enough to support a coordinated attack from below.

Celestara cultivators performed a similar check along the walls and elevated structures. Some of the towers still contained demonic troops who had withdrawn from the earlier fighting rather than being destroyed with the formation systems around them. Most remained inside their positions once it became clear the coalition was not trying to climb the walls and eliminate every surviving defender. Those who attempted to move toward firing platforms were forced back by the Celestara cultivators already controlling the nearest heights.

Umbrel scouts kept their attention farther inside the base. The surviving companies that had withdrawn from the gate district were continuing deeper rather than immediately reorganizing for another attack, and the larger enemy sectors remained too far away to reach the front in time without abandoning their own defensive positions. Several groups were moving, but their routes suggested consolidation and protection of surviving commanders rather than a direct pursuit of the coalition.

Xuanyin waited until those reports agreed before she gave the first movement order.

"The wounded go through first."

The change passed through the deeper ranks without disturbing the formations still facing the interior. Healers began moving the most seriously injured cultivators toward the gates while reserves shifted around them, keeping the protected center intact even as the army started leaving the stronghold. Those who could still walk moved under their own strength, while cultivators unable to maintain steady movement were carried on simple supports prepared during the assault.

The process was slower than rushing everyone toward the opening, but no one needed to rush.

Haotian remained inside the gate district with the forward fighters and watched the roads leading back into the base. His perception through the Dao of the Universe did not reveal any large concentration approaching rapidly enough to threaten the movement. Smaller demonic groups appeared at several distant intersections, observed the coalition from beyond effective range, and then withdrew again when it became obvious the front formations had not dissolved simply because the gates were open.

Lianhua stood several paces from Haotian with her sword lowered but still in hand. The pressure of the battle had finally begun showing more clearly in her breathing now that the coalition was no longer forcing its way through another defensive line. Her cultivation remained stable, but the repeated use of the Voidpierce Sword Sutra and the prolonged fighting through the interior had accumulated enough strain that she was no longer wasting energy maintaining unnecessary readiness.

Yinxue and Ziyue remained nearby, watching the side approaches rather than the gates themselves. Yueru had moved farther toward the outer edge of the formation, where the remaining lightning around her sword had faded to a much thinner layer than during the gate fighting. Xiangyin rested the lower end of her spear against the damaged road whenever the nearby demons remained distant, lifting it again only when movement appeared along one of the interior routes.

Yanfei conserved Frostfire completely.

Shuyue continued working closer to the middle of the coalition, where the transition from battle formation to the march out placed different demands on the mixed legions. Cultivators who had spent hours maintaining their positions now had to move without allowing fatigue to create gaps between groups. Her support remained controlled and limited, directed toward stabilizing those whose circulation or concentration had begun deteriorating after the fighting stopped demanding constant attention.

Tianlan stood beneath the two Frost Rainbow Falcons near one of the gate-support structures. His wrapped forearm had darkened in several places where blood had seeped through during the last engagements, but his grip remained steady enough that Haotian did not order him away from the line. The Falcons were visibly tired now, remaining closer to the ground and beating their wings less frequently instead of circling high over the district.

Haotian looked toward them briefly.

"How is the arm?"

Tianlan glanced down at the wrapping. "Still usable."

"That wasn't what I asked."

Tianlan flexed his fingers once before answering. "It hurts more than before."

"Then stop forcing it."

Tianlan nodded.

Haotian did not take the spear from him or send him immediately toward the healers. The remaining danger was limited enough that Tianlan could continue protecting the formation without using the injured arm at full strength. He simply shifted farther from the section most likely to receive a heavy attack and allowed other cultivators to take more of the burden there.

The first wounded groups passed through the gates without interference.

Outside, coalition formations were already spreading far enough from the stronghold that those leaving would not accumulate directly in front of the opening. The movement created a protected area beyond the walls where healers could receive the injured without blocking the groups still coming through. Reserves crossing early established defensive positions facing both the gates and the surrounding terrain in case the demons attempted to follow once the main body began leaving.

Xuanyin watched the flow from command and adjusted the sequence as the numbers changed. She did not send every support formation through immediately, because doing so would leave the fighters still inside without the same healing and reserve depth they had possessed during the assault. Instead, the protected elements were divided into sections, allowing one group to leave while another remained behind until the legions around it began moving.

The first mixed legion followed the wounded.

Its outer ranks maintained weapons and defensive arts while the interior cultivators crossed through the damaged gateway in compact groups. The opening was large enough that the legion did not need to compress dangerously, though the broken foundations forced them to avoid several sections of unstable stone near the right gate. Veridian cultivators marked those areas clearly and remained nearby until the last groups had passed.

A small demonic force appeared along an interior road while the legion was halfway through.

Umbrel scouts reported it before the demons entered striking distance.

Haotian turned toward the road and examined the group through the Dao of the Universe. It contained fewer than a full company and lacked the cultivation pressure of anyone strong enough to challenge the family directly. The demons moved cautiously, stopping whenever the coalition formations shifted toward them.

They were not charging.

They were testing whether the movement out had weakened the rear.

Xuanyin noticed the same thing.

"Do not pursue them," she ordered.

The coalition fighters nearest the road tightened their positions and waited.

The demons advanced another short distance, then stopped again when no opening appeared. Their commander remained behind the first ranks and studied the formation for several breaths before signaling withdrawal. The group disappeared back through the damaged district without releasing a single attack.

The coalition continued leaving.

That pattern repeated twice more as the deeper legions began reaching the gates. Small groups of demons approached from different directions, but none found the disorganization they had likely hoped to exploit. Every section of the army crossing outside remained connected to another section still inside, and the rear-facing formations never became thin enough for a sudden attack to isolate them.

Haotian had no interest in punishing those probes.

Every demon that withdrew without blocking the army saved the coalition from another unnecessary exchange. The first assault had already accomplished its purpose inside the stronghold, and spending cultivation to kill scattered groups during the exit would not improve that result.

The surviving front defenders understood the same reality from the opposite side.

Several officers had managed to gather troops farther inside the base, but the reports reaching them showed an army still leaving in formation rather than a retreating force stretched through the gates. Attacking would require them to move through roads already damaged during the battle, reach the gate district, break the coalition formations still protecting the rear, and then continue through the opening toward an army reorganizing outside.

None of those steps offered a favorable exchange.

They remained inside.

As more of the coalition passed through the gates, the battlefield around Haotian gradually emptied. The dense ranks that had filled the roads during the assault became narrower, then shorter, as each legion reached the opening and moved outside in sequence. Damaged buildings and broken formation platforms that had previously been hidden behind cultivators became visible again.

The front defensive district looked different without an army occupying every road.

Its major structures still stood, but many had been reduced to isolated pieces of a system that no longer functioned together. Several towers retained their physical height but had lost the formation channels that supplied them. Gate platforms remained embedded in the ground with cracks running through their surfaces, while the command platform farther behind the gates had partially collapsed around the central break Haotian created.

No one stopped to destroy what no longer mattered.

The coalition was leaving.

Xiangyin lowered her spear slightly as another legion moved through the opening.

"How many remain?"

Xuanyin answered through the communication link. "Four full legions inside. Two partial support groups. Then command and the rear formations."

Lianhua looked back toward the interior roads. "Still no serious pursuit."

"No," Xuanyin said. "They're gathering deeper inside."

Haotian remained focused on the same direction. "Let them."

The next two legions crossed without fighting.

The third encountered a brief attack from an elevated position farther east, where several surviving demonic cultivators managed to reach a damaged tower that still possessed one functioning side aperture. Their first release struck the outer defensive layer of the legion moving toward the gates, injuring two cultivators but failing to break the formation.

Celestara cultivators responded from the nearby wall.

They did not attempt to destroy the tower itself. Several moved across the upper structures and forced the demons away from the firing position before another coordinated attack could be released. Once the aperture was no longer active, the coalition continued moving rather than climbing after the retreating defenders.

The injured cultivators remained alive.

Healers treated them while they crossed.

No deaths were reported.

Xuanyin kept the pace steady.

By the time the last full legion approached the gates, most of the coalition was already outside the stronghold and reorganizing beyond the front line. The army did not spread widely across the surrounding ground. Each formation moved far enough from the gates to make room for the next and then settled into assigned positions where wounded, reserves, and combat-capable cultivators could be separated without losing overall protection.

Haotian could sense the change in cultivation pressure outside as the army accumulated there.

Inside, only the rear formations, command elements, family, Tianlan, the Falcons, and several specialist groups remained.

Xuanyin began moving command next.

The officers around her packed the maps and communication tools that still mattered, abandoning anything damaged or unnecessary rather than slowing the movement. The records gathered during the assault were preserved where possible, particularly information concerning enemy deployments, surviving Demon Generals, and the condition of the stronghold after the interior fighting.

Xuanyin remained until the equipment and personnel around her had begun moving.

Haotian contacted her.

"You can go."

"There are still formations inside."

"I know."

"So I'm staying until they move."

Haotian looked toward the command position through his perception and did not argue.

"Then move with the last support group."

"That was already the plan."

The answer carried no humor. Xuanyin simply returned to the movement around her.

The last support group reached the gates shortly afterward.

Shuyue went with them after confirming the remaining rear formations were stable enough to continue without her continuous support. She looked toward Haotian before crossing, but he gave only a small nod toward the opening. She followed the others outside rather than remaining simply because the family had not yet moved.

Yanfei left next with several exhausted cultivators from the arrowhead. Her remaining Frostfire had long since been withdrawn completely, and there was no reason to spend additional cultivation standing inside a district already secured. Ziyue and Yueru followed after the rear formation shifted closer to the gates.

Lianhua and Yinxue remained.

Xiangyin stayed with Haotian and Tianlan.

The last mixed rear formation began moving backward through the district.

They did not turn their backs on the stronghold. The first ranks withdrew while the cultivators behind them maintained their defensive orientation, then exchanged positions once enough distance opened. The process allowed the entire formation to move toward the gates without creating a moment when every fighter was facing away from the enemy.

Several demonic scouts watched from distant roads.

None approached.

Haotian continued following the movement of larger forces deeper inside.

One concentration was finally beginning to move toward the front district, but the distance separating it from the gates was still substantial. Even if the demons increased speed immediately, they would arrive after most of the coalition had already cleared the stronghold.

Xuanyin noticed the same movement.

"One larger force is coming."

"How long?"

"At least several minutes before they reach the district."

"That's enough."

The rear formation continued through the gates.

Xuanyin crossed with the last command officers.

Lianhua watched her disappear outside before looking toward Haotian. "That leaves us."

"Not yet."

Haotian turned toward one of the remaining specialist groups.

Veridian cultivators were finishing their examination of the damaged ground around the gate foundations. Celestara fighters were withdrawing from the walls in pairs, leaving only enough observers above to ensure no enemy reached an elevated firing position during the final moments.

Once the Veridian group finished, Haotian sent them outside.

Celestara followed.

The gate district became almost empty.

Only Haotian, Lianhua, Yinxue, Xiangyin, Tianlan, the two Frost Rainbow Falcons, and a small number of high-level coalition cultivators remained inside.

The approaching demonic concentration was closer now.

Haotian could distinguish several companies moving together through the interior roads. Their formation remained reasonably organized despite the damage around them, and stronger officers were pushing them forward toward the gates. They were moving too late to stop the coalition's exit, but early enough that they might reach the district before Haotian himself left.

Lianhua sensed the pressure growing.

"They finally decided to come."

Haotian continued watching them.

"They had to gather first."

"Do we wait?"

"No."

That was the only answer needed.

There was nothing left inside that justified another battle.

Tianlan moved toward the gates with the Falcons. One of the birds landed briefly beside him before passing through the opening with several strong cultivators, while the second remained overhead until Tianlan himself crossed. Haotian watched his son reach the outside formation before shifting his attention back toward the approaching demons.

Xiangyin left next.

Yinxue followed.

Lianhua remained beside Haotian for several more breaths.

The approaching force entered the outer edge of the gate district while they were still inside.

The demons saw the nearly empty roads and increased speed.

Haotian did not prepare a large technique.

He stepped backward toward the gates with Lianhua while the remaining high-level coalition cultivators crossed ahead of them. The demons continued approaching but had not yet reached effective attack range. Their officers were attempting to spread the leading companies across the road rather than sending a narrow group directly into Haotian.

That deployment cost them more time.

Haotian crossed the damaged foundation.

Lianhua followed.

The demons reached the inner side of the gate district moments after both of them emerged outside.

No attack reached the coalition before they cleared the stronghold.

Once outside, Haotian moved several dozen paces away from the gates before stopping. The coalition had already established a broad defensive formation facing the stronghold, with wounded and healers positioned farther behind and the combat-capable legions arranged in enough depth to receive an attack if the demons chose to follow.

The demonic companies reached the broken gates.

They stopped inside.

Their commanders could see what waited beyond them.

The coalition had entered the stronghold from the rear, fought through its interior, destroyed several Demon Generals, shattered large portions of its military structure, broken the front defenses from behind, and marched through the main gates while maintaining its formations. The demons could pursue, but doing so meant abandoning what remained of the stronghold's defensive protection and attacking that army directly in open ground.

They did not come through.

Haotian watched them for several breaths before turning away from the gates.

Xuanyin approached from the command formations outside.

"All units accounted for."

"Casualties during the exit?"

"None."

"Injured?"

"Several. No deaths."

Haotian nodded once.

The result matched the reports he had followed during the march out. The coalition had not escaped the stronghold. It had completed the operation, opened its own way out, and moved through that opening without losing anyone during the final passage.

Behind them, healers were already working through the formations while officers counted remaining supplies and cultivation resources. The two Frost Rainbow Falcons had settled near Tianlan rather than returning to the air, and several cultivators who had maintained themselves through discipline during the battle were finally sitting once their commanders released them from formation.

Haotian did not relax yet.

He turned back toward the stronghold and allowed the Dao of the Universe to extend through the damaged front district once more. Demonic forces were gathering inside the gates now, but their movement remained cautious. Some were reinforcing the broken front rather than advancing outside, while others were already shifting deeper into the surviving sectors.

The coalition did not remain directly in front of the broken gates once the last formations had cleared the stronghold. Xuanyin ordered the army farther away from the damaged defensive line, giving the legions enough room to reorganize without remaining within easy reach of whatever formations or ranged attacks the demons might still restore along the walls. The movement remained orderly, though the pace was slower now that there was no immediate pressure forcing everyone forward. Cultivators who had maintained their bodies through exhaustion during the assault finally began showing how much the fighting had taken from them.

Haotian moved with the outer formations until the coalition reached a position where the front of the stronghold could be observed without standing beneath its remaining towers. He did not turn his attention away from the base simply because the army had left it. The Dao of the Universe continued extending through the damaged gate district and into the regions beyond, following the surviving demonic forces as they withdrew from the front and attempted to establish some kind of order farther inside.

The stronghold remained occupied.

Large concentrations still existed in several sectors, and the coalition had not destroyed every military structure during the interior assault. Some formations remained active where the battle march had never passed, while entire districts had experienced little direct fighting because they lay outside the directions Haotian had chosen. Surviving demons were already taking advantage of those areas, pulling wounded cultivators and scattered troops toward positions that still possessed usable supplies or defenses.

What had changed was their ability to behave as one army.

The roads that once connected several major sectors were damaged or blocked. Underground routes had been collapsed where they threatened the coalition's advance, elevated crossings had been destroyed, and formation relationships that once allowed power or information to move between districts had been severed. Some routes still existed, but they were longer and less direct than before, forcing the demons to spend more time moving troops and messages between positions that had previously supported one another quickly.

Xuanyin approached while several command officers continued organizing the coalition behind her. She had already received preliminary reports from the legions, though the full accounting would take longer once everyone entered the Dao Palace of Creation and the army could be examined without needing to maintain battlefield readiness.

"How much can you still see inside?" she asked.

"Enough."

Haotian continued watching the movements beyond the gates.

"Several sectors are reorganizing. Others are pulling back toward whatever command they still have."

"Any large force preparing to come out?"

"No."

Xuanyin looked toward the open gates. Demonic cultivators could still be seen moving behind them at a distance, but none were approaching the exterior in numbers large enough to suggest pursuit. The forces that had arrived too late to stop the coalition were instead spreading through the damaged front district, checking structures and establishing a new defensive boundary farther inside.

"They know better than to follow us now," she said.

"They know what's outside."

The coalition was no longer compressed through streets and military compounds where every turn could create another close engagement. Outside the stronghold, the legions had enough space to arrange themselves properly, with the strongest formations facing the enemy and the injured positioned behind them. Any demonic commander considering pursuit would have to leave what remained of the base, pass through the ruined front defenses, and engage an army that was already waiting in open ground.

No surviving commander had made that choice.

Haotian allowed his perception to extend farther through the interior.

The damage became easier to judge now that the coalition was no longer moving through it.

Several major concentrations the demons had possessed before the assault no longer existed at all. Others had been reduced to smaller formations that were now merging with survivors from nearby districts. Bodies, destroyed equipment, broken formation platforms, and abandoned defensive positions remained throughout the path the coalition had taken from the rear toward the eastern sectors, around the clockwise sweep, and finally toward the front.

The eastern concentration had suffered particularly heavily.

That force had originally possessed enough troops to become one of the largest organized responses to the coalition's presence inside the stronghold. Its relocation had exposed long moving formations that Haotian had cut apart before they could fully reform, and the fighting that followed had destroyed several companies before the surviving sections withdrew away from the coalition's path. Those survivors still existed somewhere inside the stronghold, but they were no longer the unified army they had once been.

The same pattern appeared elsewhere.

Some sectors had lost commanders.

Others had lost supply routes.

Several had lost the Demon Generals who had previously been capable of coordinating broader responses.

The exact number of surviving demons would require more scouting than Haotian intended to perform immediately, but the estimate Xuanyin had received before the final march remained reasonable. Roughly half of the stronghold's interior military strength had been destroyed during the first assault, with the losses distributed unevenly across the sectors the coalition had struck hardest.

Xuanyin received another report through the communication network.

She listened before speaking.

"The eastern estimate just updated."

Haotian waited.

"They're confirming what we expected. Taken together with the western and southern reports, we're still close to half."

"Interior forces?"

"Yes."

Haotian nodded.

That was enough for the first operation.

The purpose had never been to kill every demon inside the base in one continuous attack. Doing so would have required the coalition to spread into sectors that no longer mattered to the immediate objective, fight through defensive positions that could simply have been bypassed, and continue spending cultivation after the enemy's larger military organization had already been broken. The first assault had instead removed enough strength and infrastructure that the demons would now have to rebuild their internal defense while anticipating another attack.

The destruction at the front mattered just as much.

Haotian examined the gate district again.

The main gates remained open because the locking network had been physically broken rather than operated. Several gate-support platforms were damaged beyond immediate use, while the command structure behind them had been split by the collapse of the central formation dependency. Outward-facing defensive arrays farther along the walls still existed in places, but many had lost the channels or relays necessary to coordinate with the main gate system.

The demons could repair those defenses eventually.

They could rebuild damaged formation links, reinforce the broken gates, and move fresh troops into the front district.

None of that could be done immediately.

More importantly, they now knew Haotian had no intention of respecting the direction in which their defenses were designed to face.

The first attack had come from the rear.

The coalition had then crossed through the interior and destroyed the front from behind.

Every surviving commander inside the stronghold would remember both facts when deciding where to place troops next.

Haotian did not yet decide how he would exploit that.

First, the coalition needed to recover.

The difference between the army standing outside the stronghold now and the army that had entered from the rear was becoming more obvious with every passing minute. The legions remained organized, but many cultivators were holding their formations through discipline rather than remaining strength. Once officers confirmed that the immediate area was secure, men and women who had remained standing throughout the assault began sitting on the ground or leaning against weapons while waiting for healers to reach them.

Some injuries were minor.

Others had been concealed during the fighting because the cultivators involved could still maintain their positions.

Cuts that had been wrapped quickly inside the stronghold were being reopened and examined properly. Cracked armor was removed. Burned flesh, bruised organs, exhausted meridians, and cultivation channels strained by repeated technique use were being checked by healers who no longer had to work while marching.

The absence of deaths during the final exit did not mean the army had passed through the stronghold untouched.

The assault had demanded hours of sustained fighting from formations that rarely received enough time to recover between engagements. Even those who had avoided serious wounds had spent cultivation maintaining defenses, movement arts, support techniques, and repeated attacks across multiple districts. The strongest cultivators had simply been able to conceal that exhaustion longer.

Haotian's family was no exception.

Lianhua sat near one of the forward formations while inspecting the edge of her sword. Her breathing had returned closer to normal, but the repeated use of spatial principles through the Voidpierce Sword Sutra had consumed more of her cultivation than the quiet expression on her face suggested. She had several minor injuries across her arms and side, none severe enough to remove her from battle earlier but enough to require treatment now that there was time.

Yinxue remained standing for a little longer before finally lowering herself beside her. She had fought repeatedly against stronger officers through the interior and gate district, and the hand holding her sword showed a faint tremor when she relaxed her grip. The movement disappeared once she noticed it, but she did not pretend the fatigue was absent.

Ziyue had already begun cleaning blood from one side of her blade. Some belonged to enemies, while a smaller amount had come from a cut along her forearm where a defensive strike had reached her during the gate battle. She allowed a healer to examine it without argument once the woman approached.

Yueru had withdrawn the last traces of lightning from her sword and was sitting with her back against a supply chest brought outside with the support formations. Her cultivation remained stable, though the repeated control required to place lightning precisely through formation weaknesses had left her visibly drained. She watched the healers moving among the legions rather than speaking.

Xiangyin remained near Haotian for several minutes longer than necessary before finally resting her spear across her knees. The weapon had absorbed repeated collisions against heavy defenders, and several sections of the shaft showed damage that would need repair before another serious battle. Her own condition was better than some of the others, but the strain through her arms and shoulders had accumulated from maintaining the spear through too many close engagements.

Yanfei sat farther back among the family and allowed her circulation to settle naturally. Frostfire had been used selectively during the final sections of the assault, which had prevented her from exhausting herself completely, but maintaining the balance between both aspects over such a long period had still taken its toll. She had already withdrawn the technique completely and was no longer trying to keep even a small amount ready.

Shuyue was the least willing to stop working.

Even after leaving the stronghold, she continued moving between mixed formations and checking cultivators whose internal circulation remained unstable. Her Dao Palace of Virtues had helped keep several formations functioning through the later fighting, and the sustained support had consumed more from her than repeated direct attacks might have. Xuanyin eventually intercepted her on the way toward another group.

"You're done."

Shuyue looked toward the cultivators ahead. "They still need—"

"They have healers."

"I can help them stabilize faster."

"And then someone will have to stabilize you."

Shuyue opened her mouth, stopped, and finally looked down at her own hands. The faint trembling there had become difficult to ignore.

Xuanyin pointed toward the family.

"Sit."

Shuyue did not argue again.

Tianlan had already been taken toward the healers because of his forearm. The wrapping was removed carefully, revealing that the wound beneath it had reopened during the later fighting but had not worsened enough to threaten permanent damage. He sat still while the injury was cleaned and treated, though his attention remained on the two Frost Rainbow Falcons resting nearby.

Neither bird wanted to remain standing.

One had folded itself onto the ground with its wings partially spread, while the second stood beside Tianlan for several minutes before lowering itself as well. Their feathers showed damage from repeated combat, and both were breathing more heavily than they normally would after flight. Healers familiar with the creatures began checking them while Tianlan remained close enough to keep them calm.

The third Frost Rainbow Falcon remained elsewhere with the healers, as it had throughout the assault.

Haotian watched his son and the two birds briefly before returning his attention to the broader army.

His own body had accumulated more damage than he had allowed to affect the battle.

The shoulder aggravated during the gate fighting had stiffened considerably since the final exchange. Several earlier injuries across his torso had reopened under repeated impacts, and although his three cores remained synchronized through the Heaven Sundering Trinity Scripture, maintaining that synchronization while fighting continuously had consumed more cultivation than he preferred.

He could continue fighting if necessary.

That did not mean continuing immediately would be sensible.

Xuanyin looked at him.

"You need treatment too."

"I know."

"That sounded convincing."

Haotian glanced toward her.

Xuanyin did not change expression.

"You're leaking blood through the robe."

Haotian looked down at the darker section along his side. The bleeding was not severe, though she was correct that it had started again after the final fighting at the command platform.

"It can wait."

"For what?"

"Until everyone is inside."

Xuanyin looked as though she might argue, then decided there was little point while the transfer had not begun yet.

Instead, she turned toward the reports still arriving from the legions.

The first complete accounting remained impossible because some injuries had not yet been registered, and several formations were still checking members who had been separated temporarily during the interior fighting before rejoining later. What mattered immediately was that every legion remained functional enough to move, no unit had been abandoned inside the stronghold, and the entire coalition had crossed the front without losing anyone during the exit.

The broader casualties from the assault itself would need to be assessed carefully once they were inside the Dao Palace of Creation.

Haotian did not want numbers rushed merely to have them sooner.

The coalition had enough time now.

He looked again toward the stronghold.

The demons were still moving behind the gates.

Some had begun dragging debris toward the opening, likely intending to create temporary barriers until proper repairs could be made. Others were inspecting damaged formation platforms or moving wounded cultivators deeper into the base. No large force had yet formed for pursuit.

Their attention had already shifted from attacking the coalition to surviving what the coalition had done.

That would change eventually.

Haotian expected it to.

The remaining Demon Generals would not simply abandon the stronghold because the first operation had succeeded. They still possessed troops, cultivation resources, formation masters, and whatever other preparations remained hidden inside the base. Given time, they would reorganize around what they had learned from Haotian's methods.

That was exactly why he did not intend to attack again before observing how they changed.

Xuanyin followed his gaze.

"You're already thinking about going back in."

"Eventually."

"Not today."

"No."

She seemed satisfied with the answer.

Haotian finally turned away from the gates.

"Prepare the Dao Palace of Creation."

Xuanyin had expected the order.

She sent instructions through the command network immediately.

The army did not disappear into the inner world all at once. Healers, wounded cultivators, exhausted support personnel, and those whose cultivation had fallen below safe combat levels were organized first. Commanders then began grouping the legions according to which sections needed treatment immediately and which could remain outside until the transfer progressed.

Haotian opened the passage into the Dao Palace of Creation once the first groups were ready.

The familiar world beyond unfolded through the opening.

The contrast with the battlefield outside was immediate.

Inside, the healing pavilions, residences, training grounds, workshops, open spaces, and other regions of the Dao Palace of Creation remained untouched by the fighting that had consumed the stronghold. The environment carried none of the Abyss corruption embedded through the base, and there were no damaged roads, ruined formations, or enemy cultivators waiting beyond the entrance.

The wounded began entering first.

Healers moved with them toward prepared treatment areas where they could work without worrying about another attack interrupting the process. Cultivators who had been carried during the exit were transferred carefully, while those capable of walking continued under their own strength until they reached the spaces assigned to their legions.

The two Frost Rainbow Falcons entered with Tianlan and the healers attending them.

Shuyue went inside shortly afterward after Xuanyin made certain she did not wander toward another group that needed help. Yanfei and Yueru followed with several of the other exhausted family members, while Ziyue entered after her arm had been treated enough that the wound would not reopen during the walk.

The mixed legions followed in stages.

Unlike their emergence inside the stronghold at the beginning of the assault, there was no urgency now. Each formation passed through, moved far enough into the Dao Palace of Creation to clear the entrance, and then broke into smaller groups according to treatment and recovery needs. Officers remained with their people long enough to make sure everyone was accounted for before allowing themselves to rest.

The transformation in the army became more visible once each legion entered.

Cultivators who had remained upright outside because they were still technically on the battlefield finally allowed themselves to lie down. Some began circulating cultivation immediately. Others ate, drank, or simply sat without speaking while their bodies adjusted to the sudden absence of combat.

Haotian remained outside.

Xuanyin stayed with him until most of the army had entered.

"You said everyone first."

"They're still moving."

"They're almost finished."

Haotian watched another legion pass through the opening.

The stronghold remained within his perception behind them.

No pursuit.

No large mobilization.

Only reorganization.

Xuanyin glanced toward the base and then back at Haotian.

"You're going to watch them."

"Yes."

"For how long?"

"Until I understand what they do after this."

That answer explained why he had not entered with the wounded.

The first assault had shown the demons how Haotian fought when he possessed the initiative. Their response to the defeat would reveal what they now believed his next move would be. Which sectors they reinforced, where they moved the remaining Demon Generals, how they rebuilt the front, and which directions received the greatest attention would all matter more than striking them again before they exposed those assumptions.

Xuanyin considered the stronghold for several moments.

"Then I'll handle recovery inside."

Haotian nodded.

"Get everyone restored as much as possible."

"And you?"

"I'll come in after I've seen enough."

She looked at the blood still visible along his robe.

"You're getting treated before you start planning another infiltration."

Haotian did not answer immediately.

Xuanyin waited.

"Yes."

"That sounded less convincing than the first one."

"I said yes."

This time she accepted it.

Xuanyin crossed through the opening into the Dao Palace of Creation as the final command personnel followed her. Only a smaller outer guard remained with Haotian, and even those cultivators were rotated inside once the last legion cleared the passage. He did not need thousands of exhausted soldiers standing outside merely to accompany him while he observed an enemy that had shown no intention of attacking.

When the transfer was complete, Haotian reduced the opening but did not close his connection to the Dao Palace of Creation entirely.

Behind him, the coalition finally had the chance to recover.

Ahead of him, the damaged stronghold remained occupied by the enemy.

Haotian stood beyond the reach of its broken front defenses and watched the demons begin rebuilding around the wounds the first assault had left behind. He did not choose his next direction of attack yet. Before he decided where to enter again, he wanted to see where the enemy believed he would come from.
