Cherreads

Chapter 1 - Prologue

There are nights when silence is louder than screams.

I know that because I've heard both.

People think evil arrives with thunder. They imagine the earth splitting apart, church bells ringing by themselves, blood dripping from ceilings, and shadows crawling across walls. They expect monsters to announce themselves before they feed.

They're wrong.

Evil is patient.

It watches.

It waits.

Then, one ordinary day, it smiles.

I should know.

I invited it inside.

If these pages have found you, then one of two things has happened.

Either I'm dead...

or I have become something that should have died long ago.

You will hear stories about me.

Some will call me a murderer.

Some will call me a victim.

Others will whisper my name only after looking over their shoulders.

Believe none of them.

No one remembers the truth once fear begins rewriting it.

This...

is the truth.

Not the version the newspapers would print.

Not the one priests would preach.

Not the one demons would laugh about.

Mine.

The first thing you must understand is this:

The Devil never knocked on my door.

He never tempted me with promises.

He never whispered my name beneath a full moon.

I searched for him.

I hunted him.

I begged for him.

Long before I knew what that meant.

People like to believe monsters are born from hatred.

They're not.

They're born from loneliness.

From grief.

From the quiet belief that no one is coming to save you.

Imagine standing in a crowded room where everyone is laughing while your entire world is collapsing behind your smile.

Imagine watching people tell you that everything happens for a reason while your heart slowly forgets what hope feels like.

Imagine praying until your knees bleed...

and hearing nothing.

Not silence.

Nothing.

That is where darkness begins.

Not in Hell.

Inside people.

There was a time when I believed God watched over every child.

I don't believe that anymore.

Because if He had been watching...

He would have seen what happened to my family.

He would have seen my father disappear into an obsession that swallowed him whole.

He would have seen my mother pretending to be stronger than she really was.

He would have seen my little sister trying to smile without understanding why the walls of our home suddenly felt colder every night.

He would have seen me.

A boy standing in the middle of it all...

waiting for someone...

anyone...

to explain why every person I loved seemed destined to vanish.

No answer ever came.

Only questions.

Questions became anger.

Anger became curiosity.

Curiosity became obsession.

By the time I realized I was no longer searching for answers...

something else had already begun searching for me.

I remember the dreams before I remember the ritual.

Dreams where corridors stretched forever beneath a crimson sky.

Dreams where faceless figures stood perfectly still until I looked away.

Dreams where someone kept counting backward from thirteen in a voice that sounded almost...

familiar.

Every morning I woke with dirt beneath my fingernails.

I never found out where it came from.

Perhaps some mysteries survive because they enjoy being mysteries.

Perhaps they are warnings we choose not to understand.

I ignored every one.

Looking back now...

I wonder whether destiny is simply another word people use when they don't want to admit they ignored every warning.

The strange thing about becoming a monster...

is that no one notices at first.

Not even you.

It begins with little things.

You stop feeling guilty.

You stop fearing the dark.

You stop dreaming about tomorrow.

One day you laugh at something that should make you cry.

Another day you realize your reflection isn't laughing with you.

Then one morning...

you wake up...

and someone else's heartbeat is echoing beneath your own.

If you've never experienced that...

I hope you never do.

Because once another soul learns the rhythm of your heart...

it never truly leaves.

People often ask the wrong question.

They ask,

"Do demons exist?"

The better question is,

"What happens when they find someone willing to welcome them?"

I know the answer.

I became it.

But none of this started with ancient symbols...

or candles...

or blood...

or forbidden words carved into forgotten pages.

It started with a family.

A broken one.

A frightened boy.

A promise whispered to the darkness when no one else was listening.

The Devil didn't steal my soul.

I held it out with both hands.

If you think that makes me weak...

By the end of this story, you'll understand why some people don't run from darkness.

Sometimes...

darkness is the only thing that answers.

And when it finally does...

it always knows your name.
