Chapter 527 - We didn't squeeze you off yesterday, did we?

Right...

Do I kick people in my sleep?

The thought surfaced out of nowhere, and Lumine found herself genuinely a little worried.

She'd always shared a bed with Paimon before, and Paimon was so tiny that Lumine had never really had to consider whether she was the kind of person who kicked in her sleep.

True, it wasn't as though she and Kaito had never shared a bed before — but the things keeping them occupied back then hadn't exactly been sleep.

"What's wrong, Lumine?" Kaito noticed she hadn't moved from where she was standing and asked, mildly curious.

"Come on, time to sleep, Lumine," Miko said from the bed, watching her still rooted to the spot. "Whatever's on your mind can wait until tomorrow — or you can come lie down and think about it."

"It's just... I'm worried I might kick people in my sleep," Lumine admitted, a little embarrassed, since both of them were looking at her now.

She wasn't even sure she actually did that, but it seemed better to say something upfront rather than have things get unbearably awkward later.

"It's fine, don't worry about it," Kaito said, doing his best to reassure her. "It's not like I'm some ordinary person. A kick or two won't do anything to me."

"Exactly," Miko chimed in after him. "Kaito's tough. Stop overthinking it."

"Alright." Lumine gave a small nod and climbed into bed.

But the moment she lay down, she realized something a little contradictory about what Miko had just said.

After all, hadn't Miko just been fretting about kicking Kaito out of bed in the middle of the night? And now she was saying Kaito was strong and there was nothing to worry about?

If that was the case... then why was Miko the one sleeping on the inside?

Click.

While Lumine was still turning that over in her head, Kaito reached over and switched off the light.

A moment later, she felt the bed dip as he lay down beside her.

She had to admit — being sandwiched in the middle gave her a surprising sense of security. Especially with Kaito right there.

Though Kaito seemed to already be exhausted, because the moment he settled in, he went completely still.

Oddly enough, she couldn't hear any snoring.

Is he lying there staring at me? Or at the ceiling?

The thought made her genuinely want to roll over and check — but she was terrified of turning around only to find him already looking straight at her. That would be mortifying.

Hm?

Just then, Lumine got the distinct feeling that Miko was staring at her. On instinct, she turned her head toward Miko's side — and found Miko propped up on one elbow, half-raised off the pillow, peering over at Kaito.

Lumine: "..."

She stared at Miko, momentarily stunned.

Miko, realizing she'd been caught, just gave Lumine a small smile, then quietly lay back down.

Looks like I'd better do the same...

Eyes fixed on the ceiling, Lumine made up her mind — and quickly turned her head to sneak a look at Kaito's side.

He's already out.

One glance told her everything: Kaito was lying there with his eyes closed, already asleep.

I should get some sleep too.

With that settled, Lumine closed her eyes and let herself drift off.

— Later that night.

Sigh...

Too many people in one bed is really not ideal...

Kaito lay on his side, facing outward, this thought running through his head entirely without his permission.

He'd been perfectly asleep — until, somewhere in the middle of the night, he'd gradually become aware that Lumine and Miko were slowly but surely edging him toward the side of the bed.

He'd had no choice but to turn sideways to take up less space.

Tomorrow, I absolutely need to get a bigger bed.

The idea had been floating around vaguely before, but now it had solidified into a firm conviction.

There was no way around it. Even if he survived tonight, tomorrow night — or the night after — he'd end up on the floor regardless.

Right.

I can just conjure one myself...

The thought struck him all at once, and he was suddenly wide awake.

The only problem was that both Miko and Lumine were sound asleep right now, and waking them up wasn't really an option.

He could, of course, just slip off to one of the other empty rooms and sleep there.

But that didn't sit right with him.

For one thing, there was the Mobius situation that both Miko and Lumine were worried about. He knew it wasn't actually a problem — but they didn't know that, and they couldn't know that.

For another, if he just quietly vanished off to another room tonight, he had a feeling something like this would never happen again.

So — better to stay put.

Sigh...

Thinking it through, Kaito let out a quiet, resigned breath.

But then it occurred to him — he could conjure up a small extra bed and push it up against the current one. A makeshift extension. That would at least solve the problem for now.

No sooner had the idea formed than he was already getting up.

— The next morning.

Mm...

Miko blinked her eyes open slowly. The room was already bright with daylight. She sat up in bed.

That was when she noticed Kaito was gone — at some point he'd already gotten up. The only ones left were her and Lumine, still sleeping beside her.

He's up this early? Miko glanced at the half-open door, mildly surprised.

Then she noticed something else: the bed seemed significantly larger than she remembered.

What on earth...?

She stared at it. The bed was definitely bigger than it had been last night.

She hadn't puzzled over it long before the answer came to her.

Did we actually kick him out of bed last night?

Looking at the seam where the two beds had been joined together, that was exactly the conclusion she arrived at.

"Good morning, Miko," Lumine said, stirring awake just then.

"Good morning." Miko smiled at her, still looking a little bleary-eyed.

It didn't take Lumine long to notice that Kaito wasn't in the room.

"Kaito's already up?" She looked at the empty space beside her and asked.

"Seems like it — though I only just woke up myself," Miko said with a nod.

"Huh? The bed got bigger?"

Lumine had spotted it too.

"Kaito found a smaller bed somewhere and pushed it up against this one," Miko said. "That's why it's bigger now."

Oh... so does that mean I actually pushed him out of bed last night?

The realization hit Lumine and she immediately felt mortified.

She'd slept so soundly that she had absolutely no memory of any of it.

"Probably," Miko said with a small nod. "Though to be fair, I think we both had a hand in it. We were sharing the bed, after all — I'm sure I contributed."

Creak.

The door swung open and Kaito walked in.

"You're both up already. I wasn't too noisy earlier, was I?" he asked, glancing between the two of them.

If only one of them had been awake he might not have said anything, but both of them up at the same time made him wonder.

"Not at all — I usually wake up around this time anyway," Lumine said quickly, shaking her head.

Miko, meanwhile, looked straight at him and asked, "Kaito — we didn't push you out of bed last night, did we?"
