Chapter 18 - Flight to Everleaf

Dalirina, Fairo, and Elinor soared high into the infinite, starry sky. The horizon stretched wider and more breathtaking with every passing second as they approached the lush, verdant borders of the Kingdom of Everleaf.

Slowly, Fairo began to regain consciousness.

His dark lashes fluttered, and confusion clouded his vision until his eyes finally settled on the vast, sweeping expanse of the earth far below them.

— "What... what is happening?" his voice trembled with sheer, unadulterated bewilderment.

Then, reality hit him like a physical blow. He suddenly realized he was astride a legendary dragon's back, gliding miles above the world. His chest tightened in sudden terror, but Dalirina immediately placed a gentle, warm hand on his arm. Her voice was steady and profoundly reassuring.

— "We are safe here, Fairo."

But Fairo could not easily shake the violent memory of the earthquake and the chaotic flames that had devoured the royal grounds just moments before. His breath hitched in his throat as he whispered: — "Was it real? That blinding fire... the ancient tremors I felt?"

She gazed toward the distant horizon, the immense weight of the awakening heavy upon her soul. — "It was real. And I am just as astonished as you are."

Before another word could be uttered between them, the sharp, deadly whistle of ice pierced the night air.

A shimmering frost-arrow streaked past them, missing Elinor by mere inches. Dalirina spun around, her heart instantly sinking at the terrifying sight—an elite vanguard army from the Kingdom of Ice and Wind, fully mounted on predatory dragons, was descending upon them from the clouds.

— "Fly, Elinor—faster!"

The great white dragon answered with a thunderous, sky-shaking roar. Her massive wings beat the air with immense, desperate force.

The sounds of the ruthless pursuit echoed directly behind them, iron and ice arrows falling through the dark like frozen rain. Dalirina and Fairo clung tightly to her glowing scales as Elinor dove low, weaving gracefully through the sprawling, shadowed greenery of the Everleaf meadows.

Finally, a towering mountain peak loomed directly ahead. With a final, desperate burst of supernatural speed, Elinor vanished behind its massive shadow, completely shielding them from the enemy's view.

They remained absolutely motionless in the dark, their hearts pounding wildly against their ribs, until the heavy silence of the valley assured them that the soldiers had completely lost their trail.

Utterly exhausted, Elinor collapsed onto the soft grass of a hidden clearing, her sides heaving heavily. Dalirina knelt beside her without a thought, gently touching the dragon's warm scales and whispering soft words of deep gratitude.

Fairo sat nearby, deathly pale and trembling, the vivid memories of the absolute power he had witnessed still playing behind his eyes.

Night soon settled fully over the hidden valley. They lit a small fire, its amber light dancing softly against the stone face of the mountain. Silence reigned over them for a long moment before Fairo finally spoke in a low, hesitant voice.

— "Dalirina... did you ever know about your power? Did you ever truly feel it hidden within you?"

She shook her head, staring into the embers. — "No. I swear to you, Fairo… I was never more than an ordinary person."

Fairo watched her intently, the crackling firelight casting long shadows across his sharp features. — "You were never ordinary. Not for a single day."

Her lips parted slightly, caught entirely between surprise and a beautiful disbelief. — "Thank you, Fairo... for everything. For always standing by me when the world turned against me, for protecting me with your life. And... please forgive me, for always dragging you into danger. I will never forget your kindness."

For a timeless moment, his gaze lingered on her face—steady, deep, and unyielding. Then, he answered with a quiet, undeniable confidence:

— "You are worth every single sacrifice, Dalirina. You are brave, curious, and incredibly kind. You carry light wherever you go. Above all, you are the most wonderful soul I have ever known."

Her smile was soft, her eyes perfectly reflecting the dazzling sparkle of the stars above. — "And you, Fairo, are truly remarkable."

Together, side by side, they raised their eyes to the infinite sky, where distant planets and ancient stars stretched into the cosmic void. Under that vast, protective celestial dome, there was no longer any need for words.

The profound silence between them spoke louder than anything else in the world.
