Chapter 39 - Chapter 38: Warning Signs

The moon rose high above the mountains, casting long shadows over the land below. The winds had shifted in the last few days, carrying with them an air of tension that could be felt by anyone paying attention. Even the birds seemed to avoid the forests now, their usual songs replaced by an eerie silence.

Li Fan traveled steadily, his focus unbroken, but he couldn't shake the feeling that something was watching him from the shadows. Every village they passed through greeted him with bowed heads, but the distance between them and him grew with each step. Even the merchants who had once fought for his business now looked at him with wary eyes, barely acknowledging his presence.

On the outskirts of a farming village, Li Fan paused, sensing something out of place. Wen Rourou walked beside him, her keen eyes scanning the surroundings.

"What is it?" she asked.

Li Fan didn't answer immediately. He turned toward a small shack on the edge of the village, the air around it crackling with energy.

"The storm is near," Li Fan said softly. "And they know I'm coming."

Before Wen could respond, a group of cloaked figures appeared from the trees. Their faces were hidden, but their movements were deliberate—each step measured and purposeful.

Wen Rourou moved to intercept them, but Li Fan held out his hand. "Wait."

The figures stopped a few paces away from him. One of them stepped forward, lowering their hood to reveal a scarred face and cold, calculating eyes.

"You are Li Fan," the figure said, their voice clipped.

Li Fan studied the person closely. "I am."

"We've been sent by the Empire to observe your actions," the figure continued. "Your path has attracted attention. Some call you a wilden—a force that must be controlled."

Li Fan's eyes narrowed. "And what if I refuse to be controlled?"

"Then we will act accordingly," the figure replied.

With a flick of his hand, several more figures emerged from the shadows, their weapons drawn and their eyes filled with menace.

But Li Fan wasn't intimidated. He stepped forward, his aura expanding, a steady pressure pushing the air around him.

"You can try," Li Fan said, his voice calm but firm. "But I won't yield to fear."

The figures hesitated for a moment, sensing the power in his words, but then the leader gave a slight nod. "We will see if you are truly the storm that is said to be coming."

The group melted back into the shadows, leaving Li Fan and Wen Rourou standing in the still night air. The weight of the encounter lingered, but Li Fan didn't let it show. He turned to Wen.

"They will be back," Li Fan said quietly. "And next time, they won't come with empty hands."

Wen nodded, but there was something in her expression that worried Li Fan. A sense of foreboding that matched his own.

"We should move," she said. "We'll be safer if we don't stay in one place too long."

Li Fan agreed, but as they walked away, a question began to burn in his mind. What was it that made them so certain he would become a threat?

In the capital, back in the Imperial Palace, the Emperor's Council met in private.

"We can't let him continue unchecked," the Grand Strategist said, pacing the room. "Li Fan's rise threatens everything. He's too strong—too fast. If he continues, he will soon be more powerful than the Empire itself."

The Imperial Envoy, a tall and regal figure, looked at the map laid out on the table. The markers showed Li Fan's recent travels, each one a reminder of his ever-growing influence.

"He's already a force of nature," the Envoy said quietly. "We must act before he becomes the storm."

The Grand Strategist turned to face the group. "We'll need a more drastic solution. But we must be careful. We cannot risk triggering the tribulations again."

The Emperor's silence hung heavily in the air, and for a long moment, no one dared speak.

Finally, the Emperor's voice cut through the tension. "Prepare the tribunal. We'll handle this quietly—before it's too late."

As the council members nodded in agreement, a shadow moved unnoticed through the corridors of the palace.

Li Fan was coming. And he would not be silenced.
