Chapter 55 - Chapter 54: The Chamber Beneath

The underground chamber opened up like a forgotten tomb, its ceiling lost in shadow. Ancient pillars covered in faded murals supported the weight above, while a soft blue glow pulsed from crystals embedded in the far wall. The jade key in Li Fan's hand grew almost hot now, tugging gently toward the center of the room.

"Feels wrong," Wei Shun muttered, his voice low as he scanned the darkness. "Too quiet after all that theater."

Rourou stayed close, her eyes on the murals. "These carvings… they're not just decoration. Look at the symbols. They match the dragon on the notes. This place was built under their watch."

Before Li Fan could answer, the key flared bright. A section of the floor slid open with a deep grinding sound, revealing a pedestal holding a small, ornate scroll case. The final piece. But as he stepped forward, three figures melted out of the shadows—masked, moving with the same fluid grace as the girl from the alley.

"Not so fast," one of them said, voice distorted. "The Court sends its regards. The key stays here."

Steel flashed. Wei Shun roared and met the first attacker head-on, his heavy blade ringing against twin daggers. Rourou spun low, sweeping the legs out from under another, her movements sharp and precise. Li Fan charged the third, the jade key still clutched tight in his off-hand.

The fight was brutal but short. These weren't ordinary thugs—they were trained, disciplined. One of them landed a grazing cut across Wei Shun's arm before Rourou dropped him with a precise strike to the neck.

Panting, Li Fan reached the pedestal. The scroll case was sealed with the same coiled dragon. He broke it open and unrolled the parchment inside.

It wasn't a technique or a map. It was a letter.

To the ones who still believe in loyalty: the Eternal Court does not collect keys. We collect people. Your names are now known in the halls that matter. Choose your next steps wisely. Some doors, once opened, cannot be closed.

A heavy silence fell over the chamber.

Wei Shun wiped blood from his arm, staring at the letter. "They weren't after some ancient treasure. They wanted us to find this. To know we're marked."

Rourou's face had gone pale again. "This whole thing… the three paths, the messages, the way they dug up our pasts. It was never about the key. It was about pulling us into their game. Making sure we understand the only way out is through them."

Li Fan crushed the letter in his fist, anger and unease twisting together in his gut. The rain still drummed far above them, but down here the air felt suddenly colder. They'd walked right into the snare, and now the trap was sprung.

He looked at his two companions—his friends—and for the first time in a long while, he wasn't sure what to say next.
