"Elia-"
The sound of a sharp slap echoed in the hall.
"You stupid arrogant man!" Elia hissed, tears falling from her eyes, "You had him! You had him and you toyed with him!"
Oberyn was too stunned to speak.
Then it all came pouring out of him like a dam had broken and the water came gushing out.
"I wanted him to confess" Oberyn burst out. "I wanted him to confess to the crimes he committed! I wanted him to look me in the eyes and tell me he did it. I wanted him to confess that Tywin Lannister was the one to tell him to do that! I wanted them all to know! I wanted justice!"
"Do not bullshit me with this!" Elia snarled. "They all knew it was that truly did it, they all knew who made the order. If you wanted justice you'd have finished the Mountain right then and there instead of playing with him! You'd have killed him and be done with it! Instead, you got yourself killed! You left behind a paramour who loves you, left behind eight daughters who would never see their father again for something as stupid as a confession for a crime everyone already knew the Mountain committed! This was never about vengeance for you, this was about you making the people responsible for my death suffer!"
"Of course I wanted them to suffer!" Oberyn exploded once more. "They sent us your and your children's bodies, each one less recognisable than the other! Aegon's head was smashed, Rhaenys was stabbed all over and you, your face was smashed in! How can I not be angry? How can I not want them to suffer?"
"Making them suffer is not justice! It's vengeance!" Elia seethed. "And fat load that has done for you! You'll return to Dorne the same way I was returned!"
"No. It will not happen like that this time. I know what they'll do. I'll be careful and-"
"Oberyn" Elia snapped, "you can never be careful if vengeance is all you can think about"
Brother and sister glared at one another, both ready to continue this debate of anger, hurt and righteousness.
But Doran stood.
The very act surprised Oberyn, who stood on instinct to help his brother.
But Doran stopped him with a look, oddly stable for someone who had forgone walking many years prior.
The eldest of the Martell siblings moved Elia to the side and sat between his youngest two siblings.
"We will not argue over this matter anymore. Not here."
Oberyn sat back down. Both he and Elia had noticed the wetness in Doran's eyes, the stiffness in his jaws and the sternness in his jaws. For Elia, it was the first time she saw her brother like this, who was always a bit distant from her and Oberyn because of how large the age gap between them was. For Oberyn it was the second time.
He'd seen that look the day Elia's and her children's bodies were brought to Dorne
Daenerys too had gotten up when Doran stood. Much like the rest of the hall, she too was hearing the argument between Oberyn and Elia. Daenerys had been the one to help Doran switch seats. He was not walking too stable at that time and had to rely on Daenerys to walk, so she was rightly worried the man would fall over. But he had not.
Daenerys took her seat and suddenly felt the awkwardness there, the tension between the siblings. She did not feel like this was her place to sit anymore.
Her eyes sought out a place to sit, an empty seat perhaps or a spot she could carry her chair to.
Rhaegar understood the awkwardness and motioned for her to sit with him. But Daenerys was not sure she'd be able to take the man's criticism up close.
So she kept looking and her eyes met Lyanna's. Her second good sister that she knew little about. The woman had tilted her head slightly to the side and smiled at her. She was the same age as her, could Daenerys call her a grown woman?
Regardless of whether she could or not, Daenerys accepted the invite and moved her chair to the part where the Starks sat. Robb got up from his seat, taking Lyanna's seat beside Arya and Jon sat on his other side. Lyanna sat in between Daenerys and Jon.
"Thank you" Daenerys whispered.
Lyanna smiled at her and nodded gently.
[THE WALL, NIGHT]
[JON SNOW and SAMWELL TARLY standing on the edge of The Wall]
"What was she like?"
"She... she had red hair."
"Please tell me that is not how you describe women normally" Sansa spoke, leaning forward to look at Jon with a raised brow.
"I'm not wrong" Jon huffed.
"When someone asks you what someone is like, you tell them about their mannerisms, their quirks, and then their physical attributes"
Sansa explained, sighing when Jon huffed again.
Boys
"Oh? How big were her feet?"
"You don't describe a lady's feet. That's insulting" Sansa shook her head.
"Is it feet specifically or-"
"Anything unflattering" Lyanna answered Robb, who had asked the question.
"What if the feet aren't unflattering?" Robb asks.
"Do you stare at woman's feet, nephew?" Lyanna raised a brow.
"No!"
"Why not?"
"It's weird"
"You have your answer."
Robb and Jon both frowned at one another.
Girls.
"Well, what do you want me to say?"
"I want you to tell me what it was like to have someone. To be with someone. To love someone and have them love you back. We're all gonna die a lot sooner than I'd planned. You're the closest I'll ever get to know it."
If Tyrion was in the mood for it, he would have made a comment on it while sipping his wine. Right now he was too busy chugging glass after glass of wine. His future self was fucked and he was toasting to his demise.
Jaime was trying, and failing to console his brother.
"So you and Gilly never-"
"No...she just had a baby!...and she never offered."
"But if she had, you would've? You'd have broken your vows?"
"The interesting thing is, our vows never specifically forbid intimate relations with women."
"What?"
"I shall take no wife, yes, that's in there, there's no denying that. I shall father no children, it's very specific. But what our vows have to say about other... activities... is open to interpretation."
"There isn't much to interpret there" Robert grunted. "You fuck as many women as you like, and as long as you don't marry one of them, you're not breaking any oaths."
"As... disgusting as those words were... my brother is not wrong" Stannis grunted, looking not too happy at having to agree with Robert on the matter.
Most look the same as Robert, unhappy to agree. Especially the women. Had the roles been reversed, they'd have no openness like that.
"I don't think Ser Alliser cares much for interpretation."
"Anyway, there's nothing for him to interpret. We didn't. So what's it like?"
"It's... there's this person, this whole other person. And you're wrapped up in them and they're wrapped up in you and... you... for a little... for a little while you're more than just you, you're..."
"Spoken like a true poet" Robb snickered.
Jon whacked him on the shoulder with a roll of his eyes and a smile on his face. He was no bleedin poet!
"And what did I get for it? An arrow six inches from my heart."
"There'll be arrows for all of us soon I imagine. They've already done the worst thing to me they could ever do."
"Dramatic" Olenna sighed. The boy needed to focus on the task at hand.
"No news from Gilly yet then" Robb mumbled. He knew for certain that the girl had somehow managed to escape, he just knew it.
"Go get some sleep, Sam. I'll take this watch."
