Chapter 81 - Chapter 80: The Big Glutton

Amamiya Rei slept deeply and soundly when a familiar notification chime suddenly rang out beside her ear.

[Ding!]

[Asahi Mai Flesh Chunk x1, Sunlight Value +160, Chakra +1600]

[Ding!]

[Asahi Mai obtained Flesh Chunk x1, Sunlight Value +400, Chakra +4000]

[Ding!]

[Ding!]

...

Rei opened his eyes, and every trace of drowsiness vanished in an instant.

He turned over and sat up on the bed, his expression blank, his thoughts momentarily suspended.

Faint, grayish light seeped through the seams of the tent, making it clear that dawn had not yet fully arrived.

Rei: "..."

Why was Asahi Mai so gluttonous?

What an absolute little glutton.

Only now did Rei remember that Asahi Mai was no longer human, but a demon who fed on flesh.

Leaving her alone in the infirmary was no different from releasing a wolf into a flock of sheep.

A self-service feast, delivered right to her door.

The critically wounded shinobi delivered in the early hours were probably already missing a fifth of their bodies.

As her master, Rei obviously could not allow his subordinate to feast alone.

Rei finished washing up at lightning speed and headed straight for the infirmary.

Creak—

He pushed the door open and locked eyes with Asahi Mai, who was in the middle of feeding.

"..."

Without a word, Rei calmly closed the door again.

He glanced through the doorway at the shinobi lying inside, each of them inexplicably missing a small portion of flesh.

Asahi Mai was not foolish, at least knowing to take only a single bite from each person.

"Master."

Seeing Rei appear, Asahi Mai moved closer to her side and raised her hand as if seeking praise, revealing a sharp arrow of compressed flame, its heat coiled inward with violent potential.

This was Asahi Mai's Blood Demon Art.

As she consumed more flesh, both her strength and her Blood Demon Art grew accordingly.

Rei glanced at the fiery arrow with clear disdain and commented critically, "Not enough. Bring me a missile next time, and we can talk."

Asahi Mai stared at Rei in confusion and asked obediently, "Master, what is a missile?"

The way she asked was far too well-behaved, uncannily resembling a docile Pomeranian waiting for instructions.

Rei explained patiently, "It is an attack that compresses power to the extreme and detonates the instant it is released."

That explanation should be sufficient for her to understand.

Asahi Mai nodded, half-comprehending.

"Aaah..."

Suddenly, she sprang to the corner of the infirmary with the agility of a monkey, panic spreading across her face.

Rei felt a faint warmth rise behind her.

Golden light spilled across the floor.

The sun had risen.

Rei glanced at the terrified Asahi Mai and beckoned to her.

Although frightened, Asahi Mai dared not disobey Rei's command and moved to his side.

She shut her eyes tightly, bracing herself for the searing agony she expected from the sunlight.

That pain never came.

Asahi Mai opened her eyes in disbelief.

Rei smiled at her and said, "I have granted you a one-hour limit to remain under sunlight."

Gratitude flooded Asahi Mai's gaze.

Rei placed his hand against Asahi Mai's cheek and spoke gently, "The better you perform, the longer you will be allowed to remain in the sun."

Although Rei possessed an abundant Sunlight Value, he had no intention of sharing too much of it.

Asahi Mai had only just become a demon, and the craving for human flesh was deeply ingrained and difficult to suppress.

If Rei granted her too much Sunlight Value, there was a risk that Asahi Mai would lose control to her hunger and expose herself before the shinobi.

Rei could end Asahi Mai's life instantly if necessary, but she was still the first subordinate Rei had ever recruited.

Rei walked to the cabinet filled with medical tools, put on a pair of medical gloves, and began a new day of treatment.

This day was no different from any other.

The only difference was that every injured shinobi in the infirmary now had to contribute two portions of flesh.

Rei's medical ninjutsu was more than enough to erase their wounds completely.

They were simply thinner than before.

On the battlefield, losing weight was only natural.

The sun rose and set.

The last trace of afterglow faded from the horizon.

*

After cleaning his hands, Rei left the infirmary, only to spot a familiar figure standing not far away.

It was Kakashi.

A delighted smile bloomed across Rei's face, as though his appearance lit a torch within her pupils.

A ray of sunlight also pierced the clouds hanging over Kakashi's heart.

"Kakashi-senpai!"

Rei ran toward him.

As she stopped in front of him, she keenly caught the scent of blood clinging to him.

So fragrant.

Rei inhaled subtly.

Wait.

Why was he sneaking a sniff?

He was a Medi-nin, after all, and could smell openly if she wanted to.

Rei sniffed again, leaning closer until her nose nearly brushed Kakashi's neck.

So fragrant.

So fragrant.

Kakashi's blood was far more enticing than that of the patients.

As expected, Kakashi was refined fare.

Kakashi quickly stepped back, narrowly avoiding physical contact.

Rei stared at him seriously and pressed, "Kakashi-senpai, are you injured?"

Kakashi paused.

He glanced at Rei's innocent expression, the corner of his mouth twitching slightly.

Before he could respond, Rei declared firmly, "You are definitely injured. I can smell the blood on you."

Kakashi pressed his lips together and replied coldly, "A minor wound."

Inside his mind, Rei scoffed.

A minor wound.

Then why come parading around in front of him?

Was this not clearly a request for attention?

Generous Rei decided to indulge him.

She grabbed Kakashi and dragged him toward the infirmary.

"Kakashi-senpai, I am a Medi-nin. Whether it is a minor wound or a severe one, I need to see it."

Her domineering concern left Kakashi with no room to refuse.

Not that he intended to.

Otherwise, there was no way he would have allowed himself to be dragged along so easily.

Kakashi obediently sat on the simple wooden bed as Rei pressed him down.

Her gaze immediately fixed on his waist, where a dark patch of blood had soaked into his clothing.

Because Asahi Mai was also present in the infirmary, Rei kept her in her peripheral vision.

Asahi Mai's nostrils flared slightly, greedily inhaling the scent of Kakashi's blood in the air.

Rei's eyebrow twitched.

She really was far too gluttonous.

Still, Rei could directly control Asahi Mai, so he was not worried about her losing control and pouncing on Kakashi.

Rei leaned forward slightly, studied Kakashi's abdomen for a moment, and then said, "Kakashi-senpai, you need to remove your upper clothing so I can treat the wound and heal you."

At those words, Kakashi froze.
