Once they stepped outside into the estate's training grounds, Ethan unclipped the rest of his Poké Balls from his belt.
"Alright, everyone."
One by one, beams of light flashed.
Marshtomp landed with a splash from a nearby fountain.
Flaaffy stretched lazily.
Vesna the Noivern circled overhead before landing gracefully.
Gengar floated out, already grinning.
Sentret hopped onto Ethan's shoulder.
Steelix lowered its enormous head beside Ethan with a deep metallic rumble.
The team looked around curiously.
Ethan smiled.
"I've got someone I'd like you all to meet."
He tossed one final Poké Ball.
"Come on out, Scizor."
A crimson flash appeared.
The red, armoured Pokémon emerged, its steel pincers clicking together as it looked around at its new teammates.
Silence.
Marshtomp blinked.
"...Marshtomp?"
Flaaffy's ears twitched.
"Flaa?"
Even Gengar stopped smiling for a moment.
He floated around Scizor in slow circles.
"Gengar..."
He poked one of the steel pincers.
Clang.
Gengar immediately rubbed his hand.
"Gengar!"
Translation:
"Ow!"
Sentret jumped down from Ethan's shoulder and began walking in circles around Scizor.
She stopped.
Tilted her head.
Walked another circle.
"...Sent?"
Translation:
"You're... still Scyther?"
Scizor nodded confidently.
"Scizor."
Steelix leaned down beside him.
The two newly evolved Pokémon looked at one another.
One, a towering steel serpent.
The other was a crimson steel mantis.
Steelix rumbled proudly.
Scizor answered with a confident click of his pincers.
Ethan folded his arms.
"As of today, you are the first of your species."
Everyone stared at the pair.
Kitsu smiled.
"History being made..."
"...and they don't even realise it."
Scizor looked around at everyone staring.
"...Scizor?"
He didn't understand why everyone was making such a big deal.
To them...
They had simply evolved.
Gengar floated beside Scizor and slung an arm over his shoulder with a mischievous grin.
"Gengar!"
Translation:
"Welcome to the team, rookie."
Scizor looked at him.
Then nodded once.
"...Scizor."
The rest of Ethan's Pokémon gathered around their two newly evolved teammates, each inspecting them with open curiosity.
For the first time since the evolution, the atmosphere wasn't one of scientific discovery.
It was simply a team welcoming its newest forms.
And Ethan couldn't help but smile.
"Now..."
He clapped his hands together.
"Let's find out what you two can really do."
Meanwhile, elsewhere on the Harmonia Estate...
Bugsy stood in one of the gardens, gently holding the Park Ball that contained his newest partner.
He still couldn't quite believe it.
A Larvesta.
Footsteps approached from behind.
"Bugsy."
He turned.
"Miss Akari?"
Akari smiled softly as she walked over.
"I heard you caught a Larvesta during the Bug-Catching Contest."
Bugsy nodded enthusiastically.
"I did."
He scratched the back of his head.
"Honestly... I still can't believe it."
Akari chuckled.
"I can."
She unclipped a Poké Ball from her belt.
"But that also means you'll need to know how to take care of it."
She tossed the ball into the air.
"Come on out."
A brilliant flash of light filled the garden.
From it emerged a majestic Pokémon with six fiery wings that shimmered like the sun itself.
Volcarona.
The warm air around it immediately rose several degrees as glowing scales drifted gently from its wings.
Bugsy's eyes widened.
"...A Volcarona."
Even Bayleef stared in amazement.
Volcarona landed gracefully beside Akari, lowering its head with quiet dignity.
Akari gently rested a hand against its neck.
"This is my partner."
"My very first Pokémon."
Bugsy looked from Volcarona to the Larvesta's Poké Ball.
"...Your starter?"
Akari nodded.
"That's right."
She smiled.
"So I know exactly what you're about to experience."
Volcarona let out a calm cry.
"Volcaa..."
Akari looked back at Bugsy.
"Larvesta are wonderful partners..."
"...but they're also incredibly difficult to raise."
"They need far more food than most Bug-types."
"They prefer warm environments."
"And they won't evolve through ordinary training."
Bugsy listened carefully, committing every word to memory.
Akari smiled.
"So..."
She folded her arms.
"If you're willing..."
"I'll teach you everything I learned raising this little one."
Volcarona gave a proud, almost regal cry.
Bugsy's face lit up.
"I'd love that!"
Bayleef nodded happily beside him.
For Bugsy...
Catching a rare Pokémon had been luck.
Learning how to become the trainer it deserved—
That would take guidance.
And Akari intended to provide it.
Akari nodded approvingly.
"Good."
She looked toward the open training field beyond the garden.
"Then let's begin with the basics."
Bugsy followed after her, Bayleef walking faithfully at his side. Volcarona floated overhead, its wings scattering warm, golden scales that melted away before they touched the ground.
Akari stopped in the middle of the field.
"First..."
She looked at Bugsy seriously.
"Release Larvesta."
Bugsy took a deep breath.
"Right."
He pressed the button on the Park Ball.
A flash of white light burst forth.
Larvesta appeared, landing with a soft bounce.
The fluffy Bug-type looked around cautiously before spotting Volcarona.
"...Lar?"
Its blue eyes widened.
Volcarona smiled warmly.
"Volca."
Larvesta immediately became excited, bouncing around in little circles.
Bugsy couldn't help but smile.
"They know each other?"
Akari shook her head.
"No."
"But every Larvesta instinctively recognizes what a Volcarona is."
She gently stroked Volcarona's neck.
"To them..."
"It's proof of what they'll one day become."
Larvesta stared at Volcarona with sparkling eyes.
Bugsy quietly knelt beside it.
"Don't worry."
"We'll get you there someday."
Larvesta looked back at him and chirped happily.
"Lar!"
Akari smiled.
"That's the right attitude."
She folded her arms.
"Now, lesson one."
"Food."
Bugsy immediately pulled out a notebook.
Akari laughed.
"I thought you might."
She pointed toward Larvesta.
"Unlike most Bug Pokémon, Larvesta has an enormous appetite."
"They consume several times their own body weight every day."
Bugsy's pencil stopped.
"...Every day?"
"Every day."
He slowly looked down at the tiny Pokémon.
Larvesta looked back innocently.
"...Lar?"
"It doesn't look that hungry."
Almost on cue—
Larvesta crawled over to a nearby berry bush.
Thirty seconds later...
Every berry was gone.
Bugsy stared at the completely stripped bush.
"..."
Bayleef looked equally horrified.
Akari chuckled.
"I told you."
"Raising a Larvesta isn't difficult because it's stubborn."
"It's difficult because it's expensive."
Volcarona nodded knowingly.
"Volca."
Bugsy slowly closed his notebook.
"I suddenly understand why people say they're rare."
Akari smiled.
"Most trainers simply can't afford to raise one."
She looked at him kindly.
"But you're not most trainers."
"You have patience."
"You genuinely love Bug Pokémon."
"And thanks to the Harmonia family..."
She glanced toward the mansion in the distance.
"I don't think food will be a problem."
Bugsy laughed sheepishly.
"I'll still make sure Larvesta earns every meal."
Larvesta happily rubbed against Bugsy's leg.
Akari nodded in approval.
"Good answer."
She smiled.
"Now..."
"Let's teach your new partner its first real lesson."
Back in the Harmonia Estate's training grounds, Ethan stood opposite his newest partner.
Scizor flexed his crimson pincers, still getting used to the weight of his new steel body.
Clang.
He looked down at himself.
"...Scizor?"
Ethan smiled.
"Feels different, doesn't it?"
Scizor nodded.
Very different.
His center of gravity had changed.
His wings felt lighter.
His arms... much heavier.
Ethan crossed his arms, thinking.
'I raised a Scizor before my regression.'
'I know what works.'
'The problem is...'
'How do I explain all of that without sounding like I somehow already know everything about a Pokémon that officially didn't exist until twenty minutes ago?'
He sighed.
One step at a time.
He smiled at Scizor.
"Alright."
"Let's start simple."
"We'll see what your new body can do."
He pointed toward a thick wooden practice post.
"Use X-Scissor."
Scizor nodded immediately.
"Scizor!"
He lowered his stance.
Both pincers crossed in front of him as emerald Bug-type energy flowed across their edges.
The energy formed a glowing X.
Then—
WHOOSH!
Scizor vanished forward.
SLASH!
The practice post split cleanly into four equal pieces before collapsing to the ground.
Everyone blinked.
Whitney whistled.
"...That's sharper than before."
Rocky lowered his massive head to inspect the cut.
Even Steelix looked impressed.
Midori adjusted her glasses.
"The power increased..."
"...but so did the precision."
Ethan nodded.
"As expected."
He walked over to the shattered post, examining the cut surfaces.
Perfectly smooth.
Almost polished.
"No wasted movement..."
He smiled.
"Your cutting ability actually improved."
Scizor looked at his pincers in surprise.
"...Scizor?"
He hadn't expected to become more precise after evolving.
Ethan looked thoughtful.
"Now..."
He glanced toward a nearby metal target.
"Let's test your new strength."
Then, almost absentmindedly, he muttered,
"...After that we'll figure out what you can actually eat."
Midori heard him.
She tilted her head.
"What do you mean?"
Ethan immediately realized he'd said that out loud.
He scratched the back of his head awkwardly.
"Well..."
"It's a completely new species."
"It evolved into a Steel-type."
"I wouldn't be surprised if its nutritional needs changed too."
Midori paused.
"...That's..."
She slowly nodded.
"...Actually a very reasonable hypothesis."
Kitsu laughed.
"You almost sounded like a professor there."
Ethan smiled nervously.
"Just guessing."
Inside, however, he was already making a mental list.
"Higher iron intake..."
"Protein..."
"Monitor wing temperature..."
"Check if the pincers require mineral supplementation..."
His regression memories were proving useful once again.
He just had to make sure nobody figured out how useful they really were.
Meanwhile, elsewhere inside the Harmonia Estate...
Akari led Bugsy into one of the estate's Pokémon care rooms.
Shelves lined the walls, filled with medicines, berries, incubators, and specialized equipment for raising rare Pokémon.
Bugsy looked around in amazement.
"...This place is incredible."
Akari smiled.
"The Harmonia family breeds and researches many rare Pokémon. Having equipment like this is fairly normal."
She walked over to a cabinet and carefully lifted out a large incubator. At first glance, it looked almost identical to the ones used for Pokémon Eggs.
She placed it gently on the floor.
"This is what I wanted to show you."
Bugsy knelt beside it, studying the machine.
"...An Egg Incubator?"
Akari nodded.
"Normally, yes."
"But it also works perfectly for Larvesta."
She looked at the fluffy Bug-type resting comfortably in Bugsy's arms.
"To raise a healthy Volcarona, Larvesta needs to sleep somewhere consistently warm."
She adjusted a few settings on the incubator before continuing.
"In the wild, that's why you'll usually find them in deserts, volcanic regions, or sandy environments."
She smiled.
"Even in their native home of Alola, they seek out warm beaches and volcanic caves."
"And in Unova, many colonies live deep within the Desert Resort."
Bugsy listened carefully, writing every word into his notebook.
"So the warmth isn't just something they like..."
"It's something they need."
"Exactly."
Akari nodded approvingly.
"A warm environment helps regulate their metabolism while they rest. A Larvesta raised in the wrong climate often grows slowly and may struggle to evolve."
Bugsy gently looked down at Larvesta.
"I'll make sure that doesn't happen."
Larvesta chirped happily.
"Lar!"
Bugsy glanced back at the incubator.
"...These must cost a fortune."
Akari laughed softly.
"They're certainly not cheap."
Then she picked up the incubator and held it out to him.
"So..."
"This one's yours."
Bugsy's eyes widened.
"W-What?"
Akari smiled.
"Consider it a gift."
"You're friends with Ethan."
"And the Harmonia family takes care of the friends of its own."
She gently placed the incubator into Bugsy's hands.
"A normal Poké Ball can keep Larvesta comfortable for short periods."
"But if you truly want it to reach its full potential..."
She patted the incubator.
"This is the best place for it to sleep every night."
Bugsy looked between the incubator and the Larvesta in his arms.
For a moment, he couldn't find the words.
Finally, he bowed deeply.
"...Thank you."
Akari smiled warmly.
"Don't thank me."
She looked at the tiny Bug Pokémon.
"Just raise it into a magnificent Volcarona."
Larvesta let out an energetic cry.
"Larvesta!"
Volcarona, standing nearby, gave a proud nod—as though silently approving of its younger kin's future trainer.
Meanw in the Labs
Midori adjusted her glasses as she looked over the data scrolling across the monitor.
"This is an eighty percent accurate care profile," she said.
"Most of it is based on Scyther's biology. The remaining twenty percent..."
She tapped the screen. "...is educated guesswork."
Ethan nodded.
"Fair enough."
Scizor stood nearby, looking down at its new crimson body. It slowly opened and closed its massive pincers.
Clack.
Clack.
It tilted its head.
"...Scizor?"
It still wasn't completely convinced this body belonged to it.
Kitsu crouched beside it with a grin.
"You look cool."
Scizor looked at her.
Then proudly puffed out its chest.
Midori continued reading.
"Scyther relied on speed and lightweight muscles. Scizor's body is significantly heavier due to the new steel exoskeleton."
She looked toward Ethan.
"So if our theory is correct..."
"It lost speed," Ethan finished.
"Exactly."
He walked over to Scizor.
"Try Quick Attack."
Scizor nodded.
It lowered its stance.
Then burst forward
or at least, it tried to.
It accelerated...
Then stopped much sooner than everyone expected.
Scizor stared at the ground.
"...Scizor?"
It tried again.
The result was the same.
Kitsu scratched her cheek.
"Yeah... definitely slower."
Midori wrote another note.
"Expected."
Ethan wasn't worried.
"In exchange, try X-Scissor."
Scizor nodded again.
Its pincers crossed.
Bright green Bug-type energy coated both claws.
With one smooth motion—
SHING!
The attack sliced through the practice target.
Then...
The wooden post behind it.
And finally left a long scar across the stone wall.
Silence.
Whitney blinked.
"...That's a lot stronger."
Rocky slowly leaned away from the damaged wall.
Even Gengar floated a little farther back.
Midori looked at the readings.
"Physical output increased by approximately forty percent."
Ethan smiled.
"I figured."
He looked at Scizor.
"You traded some speed for durability and power."
Scizor flexed one pincer.
"...Scizor."
Judging by its posture...
It didn't seem to mind.
Ethan folded his arms.
"Alright."
"New body means new training."
"No more fighting like a Scyther."
Scizor looked up.
"We're going to build your style around precision."
He pointed toward the practice field.
"Bullet Punch."
"Iron Defense."
"Swords Dance."
"Your strength is going to be controlling the battle from close range."
Midori smiled faintly.
"You already have a plan."
Ethan shrugged.
"I've been thinking about it since yesterday."
Kitsu laughed.
"Of course you have."
Scizor marched confidently toward the training ground.
"...Scizor!"
Its tone made one thing perfectly clear.
Whatever this new body could do...
It intended to master it.
