MHGA Chapter 289 – The Newcomers List
"Alright! Let me sneak out quietly and give our newcomer a surprise..."
Kairo Retsu stood behind the Gathering Hall's main gate, wearing a Wiggler headpiece, hiding behind one of the thick pillars. He listened closely for any sounds outside, ready to jump out the moment he heard movement, pop a party cannon, and surprise the new recruit.
Then, he heard a shocked, questioning voice from outside the gate—a young girl's voice:
"Where is this place? Could it be the work of a demon?! That means Momozono might be in danger again! No! I have to—"
Though Kairo heard her words, his brain didn't process them fast enough—he leapt out immediately, full of welcoming enthusiasm, and popped the cannon: "Welcome, newcomer, to the Gather—"
"Eek!!! A demon!!!"
Right before his eyes, the girl dressed in clearly magical pink attire suddenly glowed.
"Ooh! A pink-type magical girl! Guaranteed SSR from a single draw—" Kairo Retsu was still caught in the excitement—until the tiny girl before him grew taller… and taller… and taller, until she stood slightly taller than him, now a muscular, pink-haired, pink-dress-wearing buff man.
Then, a massive fist rapidly approached his field of vision—
"Wait—" Kairo Retsu couldn't finish his sentence before a power-packed punch slammed directly into his face, knocking him to the ground, where he was immediately assaulted by a flurry of wrestling moves.
Right at the front gates of his own Gathering Hall, Kairo Retsu was treated to a full beatdown—fists, kicks, and all—by the newcomer's suplexes and slams, until his body was a bloody mess…
It was only then that he finally recognized who the newcomer was—the protagonist of Magical Girl Ore:
Saki Uno, the magical girl who transforms into a musclebound, pink-haired warrior of justice!
After reducing Kairo Retsu to a pulp, Saki also began to notice something was wrong. For one, he didn't fight back… and something felt off with the impact.
Only then did she notice that the "demonic face" on his head looked... artificially made.
Trembling, Saki removed the Wiggler headpiece from the fallen Kairo Retsu. In the next instant, she was met with his death-staring eyes, wide open and full of disbelief.
"I'm doomed! I just killed a human—I'm a criminal!" Saki sat down in her muscular form with a heavy thump, like a duck sitting down. "What should I do?! I'm sorry, Sakuyo—I can't be an idol anymore… I guess I have no choice but to turn myself in…"
"Cough cough… cough—blargh—cough..."
Just as Saki was about to go turn herself in, the seemingly-dead Kairo Retsu pulled out a bottle of green tea from his backpack and chugged it down. His wounds visibly began to heal.
"Welcome… cough." Kairo Retsu stood up like a bloodied zombie. "Please… no more punching. I'll explain everything…"
Roughly twenty minutes later, Kairo Retsu sat with a complicated expression in the Canteen, watching the two magical girls in front of him sharing cake. His expression was grave.
Saki Uno had already reverted to her normal magical girl form before entering the Canteen, so Sakura Kinomoto didn't know what that pink-haired big sister looked like in her... transformed state.
The good news: the second newcomer was indeed a magical girl. A pink one too, the kind that could rival any Red Ranger in a sentai team.
The bad news: she came from the post-magical girl era.
"So you're saying… there's an anime with us as the main characters, and we've been invited here to become 'Hunters,' to help save other worlds?" Saki asked while eating her cake. "And the Gathering Hall will fully support us... meals and lodging included? And more newcomers are expected?"
"More or less..." Kairo Retsu answered with a helpless look. "Though I don't know exactly who's coming next."
"If you want the list, the Palicoes have already found out." Granny Felyne spoke gently, holding a freshly knitted Wiggler headpiece. "There are three more Hunters on the way—each one a cute, young magical girl."
"I'm a magical girl too? And a main character?" Sakura asked, a bit stunned.
"Magical! Girl! Wearing adorable clothes while fighting monsters—what else could that be?" Kairo Retsu replied righteously. "Sakura, you were my magical girl awakening!"
"Granny Felyne! Give me the list! I need to confirm who the next three magical girls are." Kairo Retsu, his spirits reinvigorated, prepared for more single-pull summons from his "gacha."
Granny Felyne nodded kindly and motioned for a Palico to bring the list. Soon, a thick piece of paper was placed before Kairo Retsu.
Sakura and Saki, who had still been uncertain about joining the Gathering Hall, couldn't help but grow curious about the other three magical girls.
What would the other magical girls be like…?
As Kairo Retsu read the list, his heart began to pound violently—so hard it felt like it might leap right out of his throat.
Besides Sakura Kinomoto and Saki Uno, the list included three more names:
"Mafuyu Kirisu…" Kairo Retsu paused, then shook his head. "Wait, no, that's We Never Learn—ah, here! 'Mami Kiryuu'…" Correction: "Mami Kiryuu" from RE:CREATORS—a magical girl from the fictional anime Magical Slayer Mamika.
"Hibiki Tachibana…" The main character of Symphogear, an upbeat, optimistic, battle-ready Red Ranger-type girl who fights with song—not technically magic, but definitely transforms.
And then—the name that made Kairo Retsu freeze, something he never imagined the Palicoes would manage to pull in:
"Madoka Kaname?!!"
Kairo Retsu was utterly stunned by the name on the list.
He knew some magical girls were OP… but this lineup was insanely overpowered.
They were practically all female Celestial Sages, descending to save a bunch of worn-out dragon hunters like him.
Especially Sakura and… Madokami. They were the very definition of divine-tier magical girls.
What was the point of slowly grinding through monster hunts when they could just show up and resolve everything in one burst? Guildmaster not eating Kirin horns, indeed...
"Guildmaster, they're still just ordinary girls for now," Granny Felyne said, gently bringing Kairo Retsu back to earth. "They don't have the powers you're imagining yet… And for some of them, the burdens that come with great power are ones no Hunter can ever help carry."
Kairo Retsu immediately calmed down, realizing what Granny Felyne meant.
"I get it." He looked at the list in his hands. "They're full of potential—is that what you mean?"
"And more importantly," he continued, "right now… they're still at a point in time where things can be changed. Right?"
