Chapter 333 - The First Vacancy

Domino looked at Luv and he looked back at her with eyes carrying that brightness that showed up when something confirmed what he'd already felt.

Both young men hugged her before she'd fully processed deciding to allow it, familiar comfort reaching into the space she usually kept clear for good reasons. She didn't pull back.

Franklin detached first and was already moving back toward his parents, working up a full exaggerated grievance as he went. "Promise me something, Aunt Dom, promise me you won't let little Nate bully little me when he gets older. I'm trying to break the cycle of trauma over here, I am genuinely suffering--"

"One more word," Nate said.

Franklin kept walking. He was grinning.

Jay wasn't processing anymore.

The Stones had burned through that part of him sometime between watching Luv nearly get cut in half and finding his hand torn off and bleeding rainbow across the arena floor, and what was left wasn't tactical, wasn't strategy, it was just forward and red and the kind of angry that doesn't think, it just acts.

He moved toward The-Powers-That-Be with one hand out, the stump of his right wrist still dripping rainbow.

She was one of the eight Ur-divisors, the abstract entity that held dominion over everything magical and strange in the Eighth Cosmos, the generative force above the Vishanti, above the goddess of Witchcraft, above every Principality that'd ever loaned its name to a sorcerer's lips. She was Triple Goddess architecture made into consciousness, Maiden, Mother, Crone, the three faces of the thing that'd governed magic since before Agamotto drew his first breath. The avatar compact, the détente with The-Natural-Order-of-Things, the entire structure of how magic moved through the multiverse, that was her domain, that was what she was.

She'd been watching the whole fight from that patient cosmic remove that Ur-divisors wore like armor and the Outsider was finally cracked open and she wasn't going to waste it. But she'd miscalculated one thing and so had Jay, and Jay's miscalculation ran hot.

He drove his fist through her swollen belly, one hand, no technique, just through, and he felt it give, felt the resistance and then the wet tearing as flesh that wasn't quite flesh parted around his arm up to the elbow.

The detonation of her magic was immediate and total with force walls that didn't bruise, they erased, tried to unmake him at the atomic level. Jay pulled up Kim Il-Sung's power of Supernatural Disruption, enhanced now inside his Infinity form, mid-stride and walked through the first one like it was steam. The disruption didn't block her power or redirect it, it just made her power's relationship with Jay cease to be a conversation worth having. She threw the next wall harder, panic creeping into the edges of her cosmic presence. He walked through that one too, his remaining fist clenched and dripping with her essence.

She came at him with everything she had dominion over, rewrote the geometry of the space between them, fractured the ground into versions of itself, pulled on forces that'd been managing the rules of magic across every timeline before Jay's great-grandparents were born, before his species learned to make fire, before anything.

He stayed in front of her and he didn't stop.

When she crested he was already inside it, when she gathered he broke her concentration before she could release, drove his fist into her again and again, and he didn't overpower her, he just refused to let her breathe, kept the distance at zero, made recovery structurally impossible. Personal. Relentless. Mean in the way that grief makes men mean when they've run out of places to put it and they've decided someone's going to pay for what they've lost.

She tried to retreat, tried to put space between them, tried to do anything, and he followed her like death itself, like something that'd stopped being a man and started being a consequence.

She made one mistake, one moment where the focus slipped, where she looked toward the arena's edge like maybe there was help coming, like maybe this wasn't how it ended for her.

Jay didn't hesitate and he reached into the Duality and inverted her, not destruction but something that sat below destruction on the list of things worth fearing. He took the whimsy, the wonder, the magic and mystery and chaos that were her substance, the Triple Goddess, the generative force, the thing that every sorcerer in every timeline had ever reached toward when they needed something larger than themselves, and turned them inside out. Stripped them clean. Hollowed her out like gutting a fish.

The Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone, all three faces of the abstract that'd outlasted the Seventh Cosmos, emptied in a single motion while she was still aware enough to feel it happening, to understand what was being done to her, to know that she was being unmade by something that used to be human and was now something else entirely.

What was left standing in her outline was cold and frictionless with no wonder, no chaos, no dominion over magic or anything that breathed or dreamed. Calculation running in the dark. An empty shell where a goddess used to be.

Two entities of pure science and natural order now existed where the multiverse had only ever made room for one and The-Natural-Order-of-Things had an identical twin, and the Axis of Power had a structural fracture running through it.

The correction came fast.

Something coalesced in the arena without announcement, an intelligence without a body, pressing itself into temporary form because the imbalance demanded a corrective and the multiverse hadn't yet decided it was allowed to fail. It didn't deliberate, it identified the weaker of the two scientific abstracts, the freshly made one, the one that had no history and no compact and no roots in the Eighth Cosmos's architecture. It absorbed it. Clean. Final. The way load-bearing structures handle the thing that doesn't belong.

Where the arena had contained The-Powers-That-Be, the abstract entity responsible for all magic and the strange, the being above the Vishanti, above the Sorcerer Supreme, the one axis of the Ur-divisors that had no intermediary because she and The-Natural-Order-of-Things hated each other too completely for one, there was now nothing.

Just empty space and the fading echo of what used to be a goddess, unmade by a man who'd lost his son and his hand and his patience all in the same fight.

The first Entity Vacancy in the history of the multiverse opened up.

The Living Tribunal's three faces, Equity, Vengeance, Necessity, all turned toward the absence at once, which wasn't something it did for routine events.

Every being in the arena registered it differently and the ones with real power felt their own foundations run a quiet check on themselves, the way load-bearing walls run a check when something changes in the earth. The lesser beings just went still, bodies ahead of their minds, the way animals go still when something structural shifts beneath them.

The throne of magic and mystery sat empty and every magic user in the multiverse had just lost the entity that held domain over their connection to the strange, had lost the abstract that'd breathed authority into every spell since Agamotto named the first Path. Every sorcerer in every reality had just become something slightly smaller without knowing it yet.

No announcements or grand ceremony.

Just a silence that pressed against every surface in the arena like it had weight, and every set of eyes in the building pointed at the same absence, and nobody moved toward it, because everyone understood without being told that the first being to move toward it would be telling every other being in the multiverse exactly who they were.

And Jay stood there with his remaining fist clenched and rainbow blood dripping from the stump of his right wrist, breathing hard, and he didn't give a single fuck about cosmic balance or multiversal consequences or any of it, because his son was safe and the bitch who'd sided with Oblivion was gone, and that was good enough for now.
