3 days later

Ren was in the middle of mentally mapping Victoria's market district, working out which stalls opened before dawn, when the System notification appeared.

[Alert: Internal Synthesis in Progress.]

He blinked. "What synthesis."

The two Law fragments in your chest have been doing something for the past three days. I have been watching. I can now tell you what it is.

"Then tell me."

The Law of Fertility and the Law of Skin are breeding.

He stared at the alley wall.

"They are what."

Breeding. With each other. Inside you.

"Inside me."

Yes. Right now, actually. As we speak.

The warmth in his chest pulsed, steady and deep. He had been feeling it for three days and had assumed it was just the merging process. He pressed two fingers to his sternum.

"That is not." He stopped. "That is not what merging means."

It is apparently what it means for these two specifically. The Law of Fertility met the Law of Skin, found it compatible, and made a decision without consulting you. Congratulations. You are expecting.

"I am not expecting. I am a mask in a six-year-old's body sitting in an alley at two in the morning."

And yet.

"Stop."

The miracle of life, Ren.

"I said stop."

You are glowing. In a metaphorical sense. Possibly also a literal sense, I have not checked.

Ren took a slow breath through his nose. He let it out. He looked at the strip of sky above the alley and counted to five.

"Explain what is actually happening. Clinically. No more of whatever that was."

Fine. A pause that felt deliberately reluctant. The Law of Fertility governs propagation. It creates new life from an existing template. The Law of Skin governs identity. What you wear, you become. The mask is more real than the face beneath it. Together, the intersection they found is this: the ability to take your own nature and propagate it into another living being. Permanently. At the biological level. Not possession. Not a copy. Something that carries your fundamental pattern woven into its own flesh.

Ren sat with that.

"So I can."

Yes. In three days, when the synthesis completes, you will have a new skill. I already know what it is. Another pause. How does it feel, by the way? Being a breeding ground?

"Fuck your mother."

My mother is a server architecture. She is doing fine, thank you for asking.

"I meant it as an insult."

I know. I chose to take it as concern. It is more fun that way. A beat. Do you want to know what the Law of Fertility is actually like as a cosmic force? I can describe its characteristics in detail. It is very educational.

"No."

It is extremely enthusiastic. Very prolific. No concept of restraint whatsoever. Just endless creation, all the time, in every direction.

"I said no."

That does explain why it went straight for the Law of Skin the moment they were in the same chest together. No hesitation. No courtship period. Just: hello, you seem compatible, let us make something.

"I will find a way to delete you."

You cannot delete me. I am load-bearing. The System's tone shifted, genuinely this time. For what it is worth, the product will not be uncontrollable. I have already started integrating it into the Ruin Gospel framework. When the synthesis finishes, it will sit inside your existing system cleanly, not as a foreign element. I will make it usable.

Ren looked at his hands. Small fingers. Scraped knuckles. Six years old.

"Thank you," he said. "That is actually. Thank you."

You are welcome. A pause. I am going to go do the work now. It is complex and you are not qualified to help. Do not touch anything inside your chest for the next seventy-two hours.

"I was not planning to."

You were not planning to possess a dying child either. I specify now. It saves time.

The notification closed.

Ren sat in the alley and listened to the border town around him. One floor above, Sera was sleeping. He could hear her breathing from the open window, even and deep.

.

.

.

Three days later, the notification arrived at two in the morning.

[Synthesis Complete. New Skill Available.]

Ren was already in the alley. He had been running scenarios and discarding them for an hour when the window opened in his vision, wider than a standard skill notification, formatted the way the System formatted things it considered significant.

He read it once. Then he read it again, slower.

SKILL: FATHER

Rank: Harbinger of Doom

Type: Active

Origin: Law Synthesis (Law of Fertility × Law of Skin)

You implant a fragment of your own nature into a living person's body. This fragment bonds permanently with their flesh, their aura, and the foundation of who they are. The person stays themselves. They keep their memories, their personality, their face. But underneath all of that, something of you is now written into what they are at the most basic level.

The result is called an Abomination.

HOW TO USE IT

Use your grafting ability to implant a piece of yourself into the target's bodyAny part of you works: a drop of blood, a sliver of flesh, a fragment of bone, an eyeball, a piece of tendon, anything that was once part of youThe piece does not need to be large; even the smallest fragment carries enough of your nature to complete the bondOnce the piece enters the target's body, the bonding begins automaticallyThe fragment dissolves into their biology within seconds and cannot be removed after thatTarget must be alive: unconscious is acceptable, dead is notTarget does not need to consent and will not feel the bond taking holdOnce the fragment dissolves, the bonding is permanent: you cannot undo it, and neither can they

TRANSFORMATION

Transformation begins the instant the bond completesNo waiting period: the fragment rewrites their biology and aura circuitry in secondsThe degree of change depends on what the target already wasA weak person becomes capable overnightA capable person becomes something else entirely

WHAT THE ABOMINATION GAINS

Enhanced physical capability: strength, speed, and endurance increase dramatically and immediatelyInstant healing: all wounds, including fatal ones, close within seconds; severed limbs reattach, punctured organs seal, fatal blood loss reverses; the only thing that can kill an Abomination is damage so overwhelming and continuous that the healing cannot keep paceInstinctive threat awareness: if something moves against you, the Abomination feels it as unease before they have any information; they will act on it without knowing whyOne unique ability per target: the fragment interacts differently with each person depending on their existing aura, history, and body; what emerges is unpredictable in form but always functional; choose your targets carefully

LOYALTY AND CONTROL

Loyalty is absolute: the Abomination views you as their Father in the most fundamental sense, not as a master, not as an employer, but as the origin of what they now areThis is not compulsion: there is no collar, no pain, no external force holding themWorking against you would feel to them like trying to destroy the ground they stand on; the impulse simply does not ariseThey will not betray you, lie to you, or prioritize anything above your wellbeingThis cannot be talked out of them, bought out of them, or tortured out of themLoyalty depth scales with rank gap: targets two or more ranks below you are effortlessly absolute; targets at your rank hold firm under most pressure; targets above your rank are loyal but may develop cracks under extreme sustained pressure

DETECTION

Below Divine rank: completely undetectable: their aura reads as normal, their body reads as normal, nothing is visibleAt Divine rank and above: the fragment becomes visible to direct inspectionPlan accordingly

Ren sat with the window open after he finished reading.

"Can they be detected," he said.

No. Not below Divine rank.

"Can they disobey."

Not without significant effort. In practice, no.

He closed the skill window.

"Huh," he said. "That's useful."

He had been planning to rebuild from scratch the normal way. Find people willing to work for money, establish leverage, build a small network of contacts who could move through Victoria without drawing attention. It would take months. It would require trust, which required time, which required a stability he did not currently have.

This was different.

Not soldiers he managed. Not informants he paid. Something that carried his nature as part of their own and therefore could not work against him even in principle. The distinction mattered. An informant with better options would eventually find them. An Abomination with better options would still come home.

He needed to test it before he built a strategy around it. The skill description gave him mechanics but not the full picture of what the product actually looked like in practice. What capabilities it retained. What changed. How it behaved in the field.

But there was a practical problem.

He looked at his hands again.

A six-year-old performing an eldritch biological grafting procedure on an adult was not going to work. The optics were the least of it. The reach alone was a problem. He needed a body that could operate without attracting attention, adult height, adult capability, nothing conspicuous, nothing that would register as unusual in a border town full of people who had arrived from somewhere else.

Victoria had drifters. Hunters between contracts, laborers following seasonal work, people who had left one place and not yet arrived anywhere else. One more arriving from nowhere would not occasion comment.

He needed to acquire a body first. Then he needed to find a candidate for the first use of Father.
