Chapter 163 - What stayed

Autumn arrived quietly.

The air turned colder.

Leaves gathered along sidewalks they used to walk together.

And somehow—

time kept moving, even when part of Velithra still felt paused somewhere back in June.

Things had changed.

There was no point pretending otherwise anymore.

Kai sounded different sometimes.

Not completely.

Just older around the edges.

More tired.

More distracted.

Velithra had changed too.

She noticed it in small ways.

She spent more time alone now without feeling lonely.

She stopped checking her phone every few minutes.

She learned how to let silence exist without panicking over it.

Distance had reshaped them.

But it hadn't erased them.

That was the strange part.

One evening, Velithra sat at the field again, knees pulled close against the cold.

Her phone buzzed beside her.

Kai:Guess what happened today.

She smiled before even opening it.

Some things never changed.

Velithra:You finally lost an argument?

Kai:Impossible.

A few seconds later—

Kai:I found a place here that reminds me of ours.

Velithra looked out across the field.

The grass moved softly in the wind.

Their place.

Still here.

Velithra:Is it quiet?

Kai:Yeah.

Kai:That's probably why.

Her chest tightened gently.

Not painfully.

Just enough to remind her something still existed between them.

She realized then—

The important things hadn't disappeared.

Not the way he still texted her first when something mattered.

Not the way she still understood his pauses before he explained them.

Not the way certain memories still felt alive instead of distant.

Things had changed shape.

But they were still there.

Velithra leaned back against the grass, staring up at the dim sky.

She thought about the version of herself from months ago.

The girl terrified of losing something before it had even ended.

Now she understood something differently.

Not every change was a loss.

And not every distance meant disappearance.

Her phone buzzed again.

Kai:Do you ever miss it?

Velithra smiled faintly.

That question could mean a hundred things.

The field.

The summer.

Them.

So she answered honestly.

Velithra:Yeah.

A pause.

But I don't think missing something means it's gone.

The typing dots appeared almost immediately.

Disappeared.

Came back.

Then—

Kai:That sounds like something you'd say.

She laughed quietly to herself.

Velithra:You like it when I say things like that.

A longer pause this time.

Then—

Kai:Yeah.

I do.

The wind moved gently around her.

Cold, but not harsh.

Velithra closed her eyes for a moment.

Thinking about everything that had changed.

Everything that hadn't.

The future was still uncertain.

They still didn't know exactly what they were becoming.

But somehow—

That didn't scare her the way it used to.

Because even after all this time—

Even after distance, silence, change—

Some things had stayed.

And maybe that mattered more than everything else that hadn't.
