Chapter 30 - CHAPTER THIRTY -ONE

Sophia stared at the contract, her hands trembling as Richard's words echoed in her mind. Ten million dollars. Her grandmother's care. Alexander's legacy was saved. All she had to do was walk away from the only man she'd ever truly loved.

"The pen is right there," Richard said softly, his voice almost gentle now. "One signature, Miss Martinez. One moment of courage to save the man you love from losing everything."

She reached for the pen, her heart breaking with each inch her fingers moved. Alexander would hate her at first, but in time he'd understand. He'd see that she'd done it for him, for Emma and Ethan, for the legacy his father had built.

"That's it," Richard encouraged, leaning forward as Sophia's fingers closed around the pen. "You're doing the right thing. Alexander will thank you someday, even if he can't see it now."

The pen was halfway to the paper when the door to the suite exploded open.

"The only thing Alexander's going to do," came a deadly quiet voice from the doorway, "is watch you burn for this."

Sophia spun around to see Alexander standing in the entrance, his presence filling the room like a gathering storm. His dark eyes were locked on Richard with an intensity that could have melted steel, and in his hand was his phone, screen glowing with a recording app that showed twenty-three minutes and counting.

"Alexander!" Sophia dropped the pen like it was on fire, relief and terror warring in her chest. "How did you…"

"I know you, love," Alexander said, never taking his eyes off Richard as he stepped into the room. Marcus and two security officers flanked him, blocking any possible exit. "I know when you're lying to protect me. And I know when someone is manipulating the woman I love."

Richard Blackwood's composure cracked for the first time, his face going pale as he stared at the recording device. "You can't just burst into a private meeting…"

"A private meeting where you're bribing my fiancée to leave me?" Alexander's voice was silk over steel. "I think that gives me certain rights, don't you... Marcus?"

The name hit the room like a bomb. Richard's face went white as bone.

"That's right," Alexander continued, moving closer with predatory grace. "Did you really think I wouldn't figure it out? Richard Blackwood, mysterious investor who appeared eighteen months ago with just enough capital and connections to buy his way onto my board. Except Richard Blackwood doesn't exist, does he?"

Sophia looked between them in confusion. "Alexander, what are you talking about?"

"Tell her," Alexander commanded, his phone still recording. "Tell her who you really are."

When Richard remained silent, Alexander's smile turned razor-sharp. "Fine. I'll do it myself. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Marcus Webb. Elena's ex-boyfriend from college. The same Marcus Webb who embezzled two million dollars from his previous company. The same Marcus Webb who sent my wife threatening letters when she refused to leave me for him."

The blood drained from Sophia's face as the pieces clicked into place. "Elena's ex..."

"The very same," Alexander confirmed. "Elena broke up with him our sophomore year at Harvard when she found out he was cheating on her with three different women. But Marcus never quite got over the fact that she chose me instead."

Marcus finally found his voice, his carefully constructed persona crumbling. "She was supposed to be mine," he said hoarsely. "We had plans, a future. Then you swooped in with your family money and your arrogant smile, and she forgot I existed."

"Elena chose me because you showed her who you really were," Alexander replied coldly. "A man who lies, who cheats, who manipulates people to get what he wants. Sound familiar?"

Marcus's hands clenched into fists on the desk. "I built myself into someone worthy of her! I made millions, I earned my place in your world. And what did it get me? She was still dead, and you were still the golden boy with everything handed to him."

"So you decided to take it all away," Sophia whispered, understanding dawning in her eyes.

"Someone had to make him pay," Marcus snarled, all pretense of civility gone. "Elena died in that car accident, and he just... moved on. Got himself a pretty little nanny to replace her like she never mattered."

Alexander's control snapped. He was across the room in three strides, hauling Marcus up by his designer tie and slamming him against the wall. "Elena's death was an accident," he growled, his face inches from Marcus's. "A drunk driver who ran a red light. Not some cosmic punishment for my supposed sins."

"Was it?" Marcus smiled through his fear, sensing he'd hit a nerve. "Are you sure about that, Alexander? Because I know things about that night. Things the police report didn't include."

The words hit Alexander like ice water. His grip loosened just enough for Marcus to continue.

"The drunk driver," Marcus whispered. "Twenty-two years old, with three DUIs on his record, should have been in jail but somehow got early release. Do you want to know who paid his bail? Who made sure he was on that street at exactly the right time?"

Alexander's world tilted. "You're lying."

"I have receipts," Marcus said, his voice gaining strength from Alexander's shock. "Bank transfers, phone records, GPS data. Elena's death wasn't an accident, Alexander. It was murder. And I planned every detail."

The confession hung in the air like poison gas. Sophia covered her mouth in horror, Marcus and Alexander stared at each other like gladiators in an arena, and the recording app on Alexander's phone captured every word.

"Why?" Alexander's voice cracked on the word.

"Because if I couldn't have her," Marcus whispered, "neither could you. And because I knew that losing her would break you. I wanted to watch the great Alexander Steele crumble into nothing."

"But you didn't crumble," Marcus continued, his voice gaining a manic edge. "You built walls, yes. You shut everyone out. But you didn't break. So I had to try again."

"The corporate attacks," Sophia breathed.

"The media manipulation, the board pressure, everything," Marcus confirmed. "I wormed my way into your inner circle, learned your weaknesses, turned your allies against you. I was so close to destroying everything you built."

"Until she came along," Marcus's eyes fixed on Sophia with pure hatred. "Little Sophia Martinez, bringing you back to life, making you happy again. I couldn't allow that."

Alexander's grip tightened again. "So you tried to take her away too."

"I thought if you lost her the same way you lost Elena, abandoned and betrayed instead of tragically taken, it would finally break you completely." Marcus's smile was bitter and broken. "But you're here, aren't you? Somehow you knew. You always fucking know."

"I know because I love her," Alexander said simply. "And love makes you pay attention to the details."

He stepped back, releasing Marcus, who slumped against the wall like a broken puppet. "Marcus, call the police. I believe we have enough evidence for multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit murder."

As Marcus Torres made the call, Alexander crossed to Sophia, who was still staring at Marcus Webb in shock. He gently took her hands, turning her away from the man who had orchestrated so much pain.

"You weren't really going to sign it," he said quietly. It wasn't a question.

Sophia's eyes filled with tears. "I was. I thought... I thought I was saving you."

"You were saving yourself from having to watch me grovel," Alexander corrected, pulling her into his arms. "I heard everything, love. I know exactly what he offered you, and I know you well enough to recognize your calls when you're planning something reckless and self-sacrificing."

"How could you be so sure?"

Alexander cupped her face in his hands, his thumbs brushing away her tears. "Because you would have kissed me goodbye this morning if you were really planning to leave. You would have held me a little longer, said 'I love you' in that voice you use when you think it might be the last time."

Sophia let out a sob that was part laugh, part grief. "You know me too well."

"I plan to spend the rest of our lives learning you even better," Alexander murmured against her forehead. "Starting with our wedding, which is still happening exactly as planned."

From across the room, Marcus Webb let out a broken laugh. "You think you've won? This is just the beginning, Alexander. I wasn't working alone. There are others, people with more patience and better planning than I had. They're coming for you, and when they do…"

"When they do," Alexander interrupted, his voice carrying the cold authority that had built an empire, "they'll find out what happens when you threaten my family."

As the police sirens grew louder outside, Alexander held Sophia closer and began planning his next move. Marcus Webb had been revealed and captured, but his warning echoed in the room like a promise.

The real enemy was still out there.

And now they knew Alexander Steele was ready for war.
