Chapter 69 - Ch.69 Qi Infusion

The sect did not see me for three days.

Not at the morning assembly. Not on the training grounds. Not atop the walls or along the inner halls.

Officially, Elder Xu was in closed cultivation.

In truth, my body had reached a limit I had not anticipated.

Vitality medicine circulated through my meridians in slow, bitter waves, keeping the regeneration alive but no longer accelerating it. The deeper damage lingered in stubborn layers, microfractures in bone, torn muscle that refused to seal completely, channels that burned whenever too much Qi passed through them.

The Fear Qi tried to rebuild everything at once.

My body refused to allow it.

So I stayed still.

And while I recovered, the sect continued to move.

Through Wu Chi.

.

Every morning, before the bell even finished its third echo, Wu Chi stood at the edge of the outer plaza.

He did not bark orders. He did not instruct. He did not correct techniques.

He only watched.

Arms at his sides. Back straight. Eyes cold and focused.

The disciples felt it immediately.

The first day, they whispered.

"The shadow of Elder Xu."

"The one who killed."

By the second day, there were no whispers left.

Training formations tightened without command. Sloppy footwork vanished. Distractions disappeared. Even the loud disciples learned restraint.

Not because Wu Chi was an instructor.

Because he was a reminder.

The last time he reported irregularities, two disciples had died.

Wu Chi understood his role perfectly.

And he enjoyed it.

.

On the evening of the third day, I summoned him.

He entered my chamber without hesitation and knelt as expected.

"You watched the sect."

"Yes, Elder Xu."

"And?"

"Efficiency has improved. Injuries are down. No desertions."

A pause.

"Everything remains stable."

I studied him for a moment.

Wu Chi's presence had changed subtly over these days. Not in cultivation, he was still only at late Qi Gathering, but in bearing. The hunger in his eyes had sharpened rather than dulled under routine.

Good.

"Do you want more power?"

The question landed without warning.

His breathing did not change.

"Yes."

No hesitation. No pretense. No false humility.

I leaned slightly forward.

"Are you loyal to me… or to Tiger Peak?"

He did not answer immediately this time.

I allowed the silence to work on him.

Then he said, calmly,

"If the sect abandons you, I will not. If you abandon the sect, I will follow."

That was not blind loyalty.

"And if I order you to stand against the sect itself?"

His jaw tightened for only a fraction of a second.

Then,

"If that path leads to strength, I will walk it."

"Even if you die on it?"

His eyes lifted to mine.

"Then I will die becoming something more than I am now."

That answer satisfied me.

I rose from the bed.

The movement pulled a sharp line of pain through my ribs, but I concealed it easily. I stepped closer to him and extended one hand forward.

"This power is not something you cultivate."

My fingers hovered above his dantian.

"It is something you accept."

Wu Chi swallowed once.

"Will it make me stronger than the others?"

"Yes."

"Will it put me above the instructors?"

"Yes."

"And will it bind me to you?"

"Yes."

He inhaled deeply.

"Then I accept."

.

I released the Fear Infusion.

A thread of condensed black intent slid from my palm and pierced directly into Wu Chi's dantian. There was no explosion. No violent upheaval.

Only pressure.

Wu Chi's body stiffened violently as the implanted Fear Qi uncoiled inside him, spreading through his meridians with invasive precision. His breath hitched once, then again, as the foreign energy merged with his own Qi rather than devouring it.

[2 000 Fear Points transferred.]

[Target: Wu Chi]

[Infusion in progress…]

His Qi surged.

Not in chaotic release, but in layered escalation.

Qi Gathering shattered in silence.

Foundation Establishment ignited behind his ribs like a second heart.

His circulation accelerated. Bones creaked. Muscles tightened. His skin flushed with sudden heat, sweat beading across his forehead as raw power flooded channels never meant to be filled this quickly.

He did not scream.

He ground his teeth and endured.

The Fear Qi did not dominate him.

It anchored itself to his cultivation like a second core, dormant unless summoned, but always present.

[Wu Chi has reached Foundation Establishment – Late Stage.]

[Fear-Aspected Qi detected.]

[Combat output temporarily comparable to Early Qi Condensation under full release.]

When the pressure finally stabilized, Wu Chi collapsed forward onto one knee, one hand braced against the floor.

His breathing came harsh and uneven.

I withdrew my hand.

"Stand," I commanded.

He gritted his teeth and forced himself upright.

His eyes burned.

Not with terror.

With exhilaration.

He flexed his fingers once. Qi trembled around his body in a darkened hue, barely visible, restrained only by will.

"I feel it," he whispered. "It's… alive?"

"It is not yours, yet." I said. "It is mine. You are merely permitted to carry it."

He lowered his head.

"I understand."

"You are now my instrument within the sect," I continued. "Your strength will grow quickly. Faster than the others. But you will never stray."

"Because of loyalty?" he asked quietly.

"Because of consequence."

He did not object.

I turned away and returned to the bed, finally allowing the tremor in my body to surface for a moment.

"I have a mission for you," I said.

Wu Chi's spine straightened instantly.

"Please speak, Master."

"There is a sect on the northern ridge," I continued. "Cloud Valley Sect. Their mountain lies less than two days' travel from here."

His brow furrowed slightly. He had heard the name before. Everyone on this range had.

"They rely on mobility," I said. "Their primary movement technique allows them to pass through forests without disturbing even a leaf. That speed is their advantage."

Wu Chi listened without interrupting, eyes sharp.

"They believe Tiger Peak is weakening," I added calmly. "They are not wrong. Without me, that would be the case."

His lips tightened faintly.

Silence stretched for a breath.

"You will not go as Wu Chi."

He waited.

"You will descend the mountain," I continued. "Go to the merchant quarter in Frostfall village. Purchase a mask. Any kind. Cheap is fine. Forgettable is better."

"A disguise," he said.

"Yes."

Then my gaze hardened.

"After that, you will enter the northern forest alone. Deep. You will not hunt patrols openly. You will wait."

"For what?"

"For a Cloud Valley disciple who is alone or in a pair," I said. "No groups. No elders. No one you cannot kill cleanly."

His breathing slowed.

"You will observe first. Wait until you are certain. Then you will strike."

I met his eyes directly.

"You will not pursue if they flee."

"I will not."

"You will not reveal Tiger Peak."

"I will not."

"You will not allow your face to be seen."

"I will not," he repeated instantly.

"When the target is dead," I continued, "you will retrieve their sect token. Nothing else matters. No trophies. No cruelty. Proof only."

Wu Chi hesitated for a fraction of a second.

"And if they are stronger than expected?"

"You retreat," I said without hesitation. "I invested far too much into you for you to die worthless death."

He nodded.

Then, after a brief pause, he asked quietly,

"Is this a test?"

"Yes."

His lips curved faintly.

"A warning?"

"Yes."

"And a declaration of war?"

"Not yet."

The smile on his face widened just slightly.

"When do I leave?"

"Now," I said. "The sun is already climbing too far."

Wu Chi rose smoothly, the new weight inside his dantian settling into his movements with unsettling ease.

He stopped at the door, then turned back once.

"Master."

"Yes."

"If I return successful… will there be another mission?"

"There will always be another mission, and reward." I replied.

That was all he needed to hear.

He bowed once and disappeared into the outer corridors without another word.

The chamber returned to silence.

I leaned back into the bed slowly, ribs protesting in dull, burning lines as the vitality medicine continued its work.

"Cloud Valley Sect... It's nothing personal."
