Chapter 3 - Chapter Three

The morning sun blazed brighter than the day before, but Noor felt a heaviness she couldn't explain as she stepped onto campus. Her books were clutched tightly against her chest, and though she smiled faintly at Aisha's chatter beside her, her thoughts kept straying.

She hadn't seen him again since yesterday.

And yet… she felt him.

Like the ghost of a presence at the edge of her senses, as though he were still near, watching. The thought made her shiver, though she couldn't have said whether it was fear—or something else.

What Noor didn't know was that across the street, leaning casually against a sleek black car, Zain was there.

His gaze didn't leave her. The world moved around him—cars passing, students rushing to class, vendors calling out their morning deals—but he was still, his entire focus fixed on the girl crossing through the campus gates.

She looked smaller in the crowd, her white scarf fluttering as she walked. Her innocence was written all over her: in her hesitant steps, her quiet laugh with her friend, the way she held her books like they were a shield.

Zain's jaw tightened.

Mine.

Their eyes met—just for a second. Across the distance, Noor looked up and froze. That same storm-dark intensity hit her, cutting through the noise and bustle. She felt the air hitch in her lungs.

Before she could look away, chaos erupted.

A group of raging students, faces half-covered with scarves, stormed into the courtyard. Shouts rose, loud and angry—something about fees, about justice—but Noor didn't hear the words. All she heard was the rush of noise, the pounding of feet, the crush of bodies as the group swelled around her.

Her books slipped from her hands. Panic clawed up her throat.

Aisha's voice was drowned out in the uproar. Noor's chest tightened painfully, breaths coming short and ragged. The crowd pressed closer, too close, and the world spun—faces blurring, voices echoing.

She was drowning in the noise.

From a distance, Zain's man—the one shadowing him from the car—saw it happen. He didn't hesitate. Pulling out his phone, he barked into it quickly, "Boss—it's her. She's in trouble."

Zain's cigarette burned down between his fingers before he even realized he'd dropped it. The next second, he was moving.

He crossed the gates with a predator's stride, unbothered by the shouting students. His presence cut through the chaos like a blade, his men close behind.

And then—

BANG.

The sound of a single gunshot split the air, fired skyward by one of Zain's men. Silence slammed into the courtyard, sharp and absolute. The mob froze, startled.

But Noor didn't.

The crack of the gunshot was the final blow her fragile composure couldn't withstand. Her vision blurred, black spots spreading at the edges. Her knees buckled.

Zain was there before she hit the ground.

His arms caught her, pulling her against his chest with a suddenness that stole even his breath. She was trembling, her face pale, her lashes fluttering as though she was caught in the space between fainting and waking.

For the first time in a long while, something twisted in Zain's chest. Possession, yes—but something else too.

He looked down at her fragile form in his arms, then at the stunned silence of the courtyard. His voice was low, dangerous, a growl meant only for himself.

"No one touches her."

And with that, Zain carried her away, leaving the chaos behind—unaware that in this single moment, the threads of her life had been pulled entirely into his hands.
