"If that's the case, then it's even more terrifying!" Captain America Rogers said.
If Hydra truly possessed such capabilities, the mere thought of it was enough to send a chill down one's spine.
They were collecting the Infinity Stones one by one. What exactly were they trying to do?
"If that's the case, then what is the Time Variance Authority doing? Shouldn't they be pruning those evil timelines?" Hawkeye Barton couldn't help but chime in.
"If they were to start pruning, we'd probably be the first ones to go!" Black Widow Natasha remarked.
Everyone nodded in agreement. If the Time Variance Authority were to intervene, they would likely be the first targets to be eliminated.
As a result, they had complicated feelings about the existence of the Time Variance Authority. Sometimes, they felt the TVA meddled too much, but other times, they couldn't imagine what the world would look like without them.
For a moment, they were torn between hoping the Time Variance Authority would intervene and hoping they wouldn't.
Watching Black Widow's recent congressional hearing, where she methodically dismantled those idiot U.S. representatives with her airtight arguments, I have to say—there's a reason she's the most popular female hero. She's just so damn badass.
Though her raw power might not be top-tier among the Avengers, she often plays a role no one else can. It was her who saw through Loki's true objective—Hulk—during the Battle of New York. She's the one who could soothe the Hulk's rage, the one who brought Hawkeye back from his Ronin phase, and ultimately, the one who sacrificed herself to retrieve the Soul Stone, completing her final redemption.
Even though her sister Yelena later inherited the Black Widow mantle, becoming the second Black Widow, I have to admit: so far, the "Second Generation" successors have been pretty terrible.
Iron Man II—that little Black girl, Ironheart—not only has a terrible aesthetic but is also written like absolute garbage. They should have just let Iron Lad take over.
Hawkeye II was a complete letdown. Hulk II—Bruce Banner's dim-witted son—seems pretty mediocre. And his cousin, She-Hulk? She's just... a total mess.
"The second Captain America... To think the mantle was passed to Falcon, Sam. It's unbelievable. He doesn't even perform as well as other versions of Bucky, the Winter Soldier.
The second Thor... It seems there isn't a second Thor yet. Well, if you count the God Butcher's daughter...
After the first generation stepped down, the second generation's performance has been truly mediocre. They can't carry their fathers' banners at all. What a complete shitshow."
The crowd was caught off guard by the long string of Lin Feng's complaints, many of which were directed at them.
Among them, Lin Feng spoke highly of Black Widow. In his eyes, Natasha's death was similar to Tony Stark's—a perfect exit, a death that truly mattered.
What really broke them, however, were the various second-generation heroes Lin Feng mentioned.
Tony Stark knew who his successors were. He had a few: his own daughter, Morgan; his "adopted son," Peter Parker, Spider-Man; and his official successor, Ironheart, the second Iron Man, whom Lin Feng had just torn to shreds.
But now, out of nowhere, a "Iron Lad" had appeared.
And it seemed he was somehow connected to Tony.
Looking at the timeline, however, this Iron Lad was likely a superhero from the far future. Otherwise, if he had performed well, Lin Feng would have mentioned him sooner.
And Ironheart wouldn't be the one to take over as Iron Man II.
*Why does it feel like I have more and more successors?*
As for Hawkeye, he never expected to have a successor like Hawkeye II, even if Lin Feng's assessment of him was merely "passable."
But what concerned him more was Lin Feng's comment about him becoming Ronin.
Ronin... that was hardly a good reputation. What exactly happened in the future?
"Bruce, you have a son," Nick Fury teased.
Bruce Banner, however, was completely serious. He had just broken up with his ex-girlfriend and was currently in a flirtatious phase with Black Widow. Now, out of the blue, he was told he had a son who had apparently inherited his transformation ability.
And his cousin had somehow become She-Hulk—something he could never have imagined.
Captain America was also stunned. He hadn't expected to have a successor either. In fact, there were two Captain America IIs: one was Falcon Sam, and apparently, in another parallel timeline, there was another version—the Winter Soldier.
For Thor, the situation was much simpler. He had no children of his own, so his attention was fixed on the God Butcher's daughter. A sharp glint flashed in his eyes.
*The God Butcher...* What kind of name was that? He found himself instinctively despising the man.
*Because he himself was a god!*
"It seems Lin Feng doesn't hold much hope for our future successors," Nick Fury remarked. "What does this tell us? It means we all need to protect ourselves well to face the many crises ahead. We can't just trust in the wisdom of future generations. From the looks of it, their wisdom is a bit unreliable."
A sense of urgency rose in everyone's hearts. Among them, only the younger Wanda and Quicksilver, along with the god and demigod Thor and Wonder Woman Diana, had no concerns about their lifespans.
The rest were ordinary humans, all well into their prime. Captain America was over a hundred years old, and the others were in their forties. This was the age when one had to start considering a successor.
It was also time to properly cultivate the next generation.
They couldn't let the cause of the superheroes end with them.
[Though it felt a bit unfair for Black Widow to exit like this, perhaps this was the best way for her to go. Just like Tony Stark's death, she had become a legend.
But she still had plenty of screen time in other parallel timelines, fighting Six-Gem Ultron and sweeping the MVP award in one go. I have to say, Black Widow is awesome!]
Seeing Lin Feng's praise, Black Widow felt a bit embarrassed. He was being a bit too much. Although this involved her death, she took it all in stride.
As for Tony Stark, he noticed the most important piece of information: Six-Gem Ultron.
He gasped. They had witnessed the terror of Six-Gem Thanos, and the superheroes were completely powerless against him. And that wasn't even Six-Gem Thanos, but Five-Gem Thanos.
If Five-Gem Thanos was already that outrageous, what kind of existence would Six-Gem Ultron be?
He really wanted to shout, "This is insane! Why would any timeline develop in such a ridiculous way?"
At this moment, everyone else had also realized this point: Six-Gem Ultron.
What was Ultron's core motivation?
To destroy all of humanity and return Earth to its primordial state. What terrifying consequences would ensue if he were to assemble all six Infinity Stones?
They had already had many discussions regarding the relationship between Earth and humanity, and they all basically agreed on one point: an Earth without humans would have no meaning at all.
Though it sounded selfish, that was simply the reality.
While everyone was still immersed in the horror of Six-Gem Ultron, a video suddenly appeared below.
[Black Widow's Finest Moment, Black Widow Supreme!]
Everyone quickly clicked to watch it and saw Loki appearing in a transparent cell.
Nick Fury immediately recognized this cell; he had prepared it specifically to contain the Hulk in case he went berserk. But Loki was the one imprisoned inside. He seemed to understand something.
The Battle of New York?
In the footage, Loki paced back and forth. After a moment, he stopped, a smug smile spreading across his face. "Not many people can sneak up on me," he said.
Turning around, he saw Black Widow Natasha standing outside the cell, having appeared without a sound.
"You guessed I would come," Natasha said, her gaze cold.
"Need I even say it?" Loki chuckled. "No matter what torture Nick Fury inflicts upon me, you always show up right on time, like an old friend."
"I'm truly touched!" Loki's smug smile deepened, clearly believing he had seen right through this mortal.
Natasha remained unmoved, her voice flat. "I want to know what you did to Barton."
"I merely expanded his mind," Loki replied.
Watching this, Hawkeye Barton finally understood. This was indeed the Battle of New York from the Sacred Timeline, where he had been mind-controlled by Loki. His dark history was being replayed.
Black Widow Natasha stepped forward, her voice laced with a hint of resentment. "When you succeed, when you get what you want, what do you think will happen to Barton's mind?"
"Oh, you love him, Agent Romanoff!"
Loki's face twisted into a smug grin, as if he had just uncovered a secret.
"Love? That's for children. I owe him a favor," Natasha replied coolly, crossing her arms.
"Tell me more!" Loki chuckled, backing away slowly.
It was clear he didn't buy her story. He trusted his own judgment. The more Natasha pretended not to care, the more certain he became that there was something going on between her and Hawkeye Barton.
Natasha seemed to have a thought, made a silent decision, and let out a sigh of relief. "Before I joined S.H.I.E.L.D., I already had a reputation. I have a very particular set of skills," she said, sitting down on a nearby chair. "The truth is, I don't care who I work for, or whose life I take. That's why I ended up on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s blacklist."
