Chapter 124 - Behind Enemy Lines

Night fell over the jungle, but the battlefield did not sleep.

The trees flashed with gunfire. Explosions bloomed behind the canopy, lighting the forest in violent bursts of orange and red. Somewhere deeper in the dark, metal clashed against claws and blades, while soldiers shouted through thick humidity and smoke.

Under that chaos, Ian, Renn Varos, and Deadshot Valor moved in silence.

Their target was the demon command post buried deep inside the jungle front.

They marched through mud that swallowed their boots, stepping over roots and broken branches without knowing exactly where their feet would land. The air was heavy with the smell of gunpowder, smoke, wet leaves, and blood. Every few seconds, the distant roar of artillery rolled through the trees like thunder.

Deadshot slowed near a rise covered in tangled vines. "Ian, I'm going ahead. I'll set up on a vantage point."

Ian nodded. "Good. Let us know when you're in position."

Deadshot disappeared into the trees without another word.

Ian and Renn continued forward, moving low through the brush until the demon command post came into view. It wasn't a rough camp or some wild nest. It was built with structure—watchtowers, barricades, antenna-like bone spires, guarded doors, and patrol paths.

Ian studied it for a moment.

"We need to be quiet," he said. "A lot of scouts and soldiers around this place."

Renn checked the left side. "Side entrance. Light guard presence."

Ian moved to the door and pulled out a small laser cutter. The beam glowed silently as it carved through the lock mechanism, the metal hissing softly in the damp air. A few seconds later, the door opened.

Deadshot's voice came through comms.

"I'm in position. I can see inside through the upper windows."

Ian stepped in first. "Guide us."

Deadshot's scope swept over the building from his vantage point. His weapon followed every heat signature before it became a threat.

"Two ahead. Left hallway. Wait… one turning."

A suppressed shot cracked through the jungle.

The demon dropped before it could finish turning.

"Clear."

Ian and Renn moved.

They swept through the command tower with quiet precision. Ian's blade flashed only when needed. Renn handled corners, doors, and close threats with calm efficiency. Any demon that got too close was gone before it could sound an alarm.

The deeper they went, the more Ian noticed.

Maps.

Supply routes.

Communication boards.

Battlefield formations.

"This isn't a swarm," Ian muttered, looking over a tactical table covered in demon markings. "They're becoming more organized. More like an actual army."

Renn pulled a data slate from one of the stations and skimmed through it. "I've been seeing reports like that. Some of these demon factions have real civilization. Military ranks. Leadership. Logistics. Territory."

Ian was quiet for a moment as they moved deeper into the tower.

"That changes things."

Renn glanced at him. "How?"

Ian cut down a demon guard before answering. "If they have society… then eventually we have to ask if fighting them forever is the only option."

Renn's expression stayed serious. "Maybe. But remember their side of the story. They believe this world was taken from them after the old world fell. They're not just angry. They think they're reclaiming what belongs to them."

Ian exhaled quietly.

"Yeah. The whole old world and new world thing."

He looked out one of the narrow windows, watching fire flicker across the jungle.

"Still crazy to think someone out there had enough power to create new worlds."

Renn didn't answer.

Some topics were too big for the middle of a mission.

They reached the main command hub a few minutes later.

The room was filled with glowing maps, pulsing communication pillars, tactical boards, and strange organic machines connected by red-black energy lines. This was where the demon front was being coordinated.

Ian looked at Renn.

"Break everything."

Renn allowed himself a faint smile. "Gladly."

They moved fast. Renn uploaded viruses into every system he could access, corrupting battlefield signals and command relays. Ian smashed control pillars, cut through power nodes, and destroyed map tables. Deadshot kept watch from outside, dropping any guard who came too close to the building.

Within minutes, the command hub was crippled.

Enemy formations across the jungle began losing coordination almost immediately.

Ian and Renn left the way they came. Deadshot pulled back from his vantage point, all three disappearing into the jungle without ever being seen.

By the time they returned to the STF warship, reports were already flooding in.

The demon army in the jungle was faltering.

Units were turning the wrong direction. Air support was late. Ground pushes were breaking apart before they could form properly.

Ian stood on the command bridge, watching the jungle front shift in the Empire's favor.

Optimus returned not long after, still marked with dirt, smoke, and jungle blood.

"So," Optimus said, walking up beside him, "we basically wiped out their jungle coordination. Capt One Arm should be able to handle the rest."

Ian nodded. "Agreed."

Optimus looked toward the mountain region on the holographic map. "Then let's go help Ice King."

Ian looked to the helm. "Move us to the mountain front."

The massive STF warship turned.

Its engines roared through the night as it left the jungle battlefield behind, heading toward the frozen peaks where another front still burned.

Back in the jungle, far below, the demon commander arrived at the destroyed command center.

He walked through the wreckage in silence.

Broken maps. Dead guards. Dead systems. Destroyed relays.

He didn't need long to understand what had happened.

He knew who had done it.

His eyes narrowed, and the shadows around him seemed to tighten.

"Get my swords," he said.

The demons around him froze.

The commander turned toward the battlefield, voice low and dangerous.

"I'm entering the field."

And somewhere in the jungle, the war was about to change again.
