Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Final Match

March 4th 3028

[Apex Dome]

[Crowd cheering]

"Welcome to all!!" An announcers voice blared from the speakers.

[Crowd roars]

"This is what we've all been waiting for, the Velocity World Cup!! The match will begin shortly and don't forget to get your drinks and food for this is a once in a lifetime experience. We get to witness two of history's greatest teams compete for the world championship!"

[In the locker room]

"Hey, Stein you coming?" Rick said standing by the door. "Yeah, just give me a second." Michael replied looking at a photo of his one month old son.

Shortly after he stepped out following his teammates to the players' tunnel. The two teams stood side by side ready to head onto the pitch.

"Hey Michael, goodluck out there" Dan said he was the captain of the Royce Leopards. "Yeah thanks Dan, you too" Michael replied.

The two teams came out running onto the field and were greeted by the roaring fans.

The teams gathered around in their own circles before the match officially started. "Our fans have never let us down." Rick said grinning as he took in the energy of the booming crowd. "Yeah, let's give them what they came for" Michael replied, putting his captain's arm band on.

Michael began talking. "Alright brothers, we're going to give the fans what they came for, a good match and our long awaited victory, any objections?" He asked looking around at his teammates, searching for nerves and doubts but instead saw grins of excitement and anticipation when he saw their expressions, he smiled clearly knowing that was the answer he'd receive from them "That's what I thought, now let's show the Leopards why the Lions are the kings of the jungle and the kings of this pitch!" The teammates Rick, Connor, Mason, Terry and Gervan erupted in cheers as they got into position.

[The rules were displayed on the Holopanels]

Rule 1: Teams consist of six players, a striker, two wingers and three defenders.

Rule 2: The only way to score a goal is if the V-Ball passes through the Vortex Ring at a high velocity acceleration, the ring scans every kick that passes. Only those that pass the velocity threshold are considered goals.

Rule 3: The match is 60-minutes long.

Rule 4: Use of Velocea and Innate Arts is permitted

The host's voice echoed from the speakers once more announcing the beginning of the match. The match began shortly after the two teams heading in for an intense match, two of the greatest teams going head-to-head in a very important and history making tournament.

The Leopards started the kick-off, the match got physical from the get go. The Lions wasting no time in attacking.

"Keep the ball on the ground." Dan called to his teammates as he passed the ball to Ethan his team's left winger. The play was strategic keeping the ball on the ground meant keeping it away from air dominating players like Michael and Connor from the Lions team.

Ethan received it cleanly, barely letting it touch too far as Rick rushed in immediately to challenge him. The pressure came fast, like a wave, forcing every touch to be precise. He barely got away from Rick, then he passed to his teammate Jordan and he advanced toward the Lions' Vortex Ring.

Gervan intercepted him with a brutal tackle that sent him flying, stealing the ball for his team and passing it to Connor.

Connor, reading the entire field like a chessboard, didn't rush his next move he slid a perfectly weighted pass out to Terry on the left flank. Terry took it in stride, barely breaking pace, drawing a defender in before slipping a quick, sharp pass forward into space. Rick met it cleanly, already accelerating into the gap as the Lions' attack began to form its shape.

Rick released a quick, precise pass straight into the central lane where Michael was already drifting into position. The moment it reached him, Michael didn't just control it he transformed the play, using flawless footwork to glide past Dan's challenge.

Dan though, wasn't easy to shake off he read Michael's movement and stepped in cleanly, meeting him head-on as the two clashed in a tight duel. For a moment, Dan got the upper hand, slipping a foot in and stealing the ball away with sharp precision, turning instantly to break forward.

But before he could even take two steps, Michael reacted.

In a blink, he swept back in with impossible timing, reclaiming the ball mid-transition and spinning past Dan's shoulder. The interception never fully became Dan's advantage. Michael had already reset the balance and surged forward into open space, advancing the Lions' attack once again.

Derek, the middle defender, read the danger immediately and charged in to shut Michael down, timing his approach for a clean stop. Michael saw it coming too late to evade completely he braced for impact and took the hit head-on, the collision rattling him but not breaking his focus.

Even as he was forced off balance, Michael didn't waste the moment. With a sharp, instinctive release, he slipped the ball out of the pressure zone, threading it into Rick's path just before going down.

Rick didn't hesitate.

He met it in a stride, struck it cleanly, and unleashed a powerful finish that sent the ball surging forward at high velocity, like a streak of energy toward the Vortex Ring.

"Goal! An incredible play from the Lions!" The announcer said. The fans cheered as the ball got through the Vortex Ring, and registered as a goal.

The crowd erupts all over again, even louder this time, as blue holographic sparks rain down from the stadium ceiling. The V-Ball is automatically retrieved by the field system and levitated back toward the center circle.

Twenty minutes have passed in what feels like a blur of nonstop attacks and counterattacks, with both the Lions and Leopards refusing to give any ground. The match has turned into pure chaos, each team trading goals almost instantly, until the scoreboard finally locks at 3–3. The stadium is roaring uncontrollably, but the players are locked in a different kind of focus now breathing heavier, movements sharper, knowing that the next goal won't just shift momentum… it could decide everything.

"Tch… this pace is insane," Terry muttered between breaths, wiping sweat from his jaw as the players reset positions. "I'm burning through Velocea way too fast."

Rick exhaled sharply beside him, keeping his eyes on the Leopards' formation. "Already? At this rate you won't last the full match."

"Then stop wasting movement." Michael said calmly. "Don't chase the game… control it. Use what's left wisely, or the Leopards will overpower us before the end…" He glanced toward the opposing side, noticing their exhausted expressions as well. "Besides, they're playing just as hard as we are. They are also burning out, it's not just us."

With only ten minutes remaining before halftime, the pace of the match somehow refused to drop. The Lions and Leopards continued tearing across the field despite the exhaustion weighing on them, forcing plays through sheer determination as their Velocea reserves steadily burned away. Every movement now carried pressure behind it, the score still deadlocked while both teams fought desperately to gain control before the whistle could finally bring a moment to breathe.

[Half time, whistle blows]

[Royce Leopards' locker room]

Inside the Leopards' locker room, the atmosphere was tense, exhaustion hanging over the players as heavily as the heat from the match itself. Some sat silently catching their breath while others replayed missed chances in their heads.

Their coach Sebastian stood in front of them with his arms crossed, his sharp gaze moving across every player in the room before he finally spoke.

"Why are your heads down? You're acting like you're losing." His voice carried calm authority. "The score is 3–3 against the strongest team in the tournament. That doesn't mean you're failing… it means you're standing on equal ground with monsters."

Sebastian walked toward the tactical screen beside the room and pointed toward the Lions' formation. "The Lions rely on momentum. Once Michael controls the pace, the rest of their team moves freely around him. So stop chasing the ball blindly." He tapped the screen sharply. "Force Michael into isolated plays. Cut off Rick's passing lanes. And pressure Connor before he can organize transitions."

Dan narrowed his eyes. "So we break their structure first?"

"Exactly." Sebastian replied. "They're exhausted just like you are. The difference between victory and defeat now isn't talent it's who stays composed when their body starts failing."

A small grin formed on Derek's face as he stood up. "Then we take control in the second half."

[Lapse Lions' locker room]

Inside the Lions' locker room, the atmosphere was heavy with exhaustion. Sweat dripped from uniforms onto the floor as players tried to steady their breathing after the brutal first half.

Coach Malcolm stood silently at the front of the room for a moment, letting the tension settle before speaking.

"You all feel it, don't you?" he said calmly. "Your legs are heavier. Your Velocea is running thin. Every movement hurts more than it did twenty minutes ago. That means something," he continued. "It means even at your limit, you're standing equally against one of the strongest teams in this tournament."

Malcolm walked over to the holoscreen displaying the field layout. "The Leopards are beginning to rely on reaction plays. They're chasing momentum instead of controlling it." He pointed toward the center lanes. "That's where we win."

Rick crossed his arms. "So we tighten the midfield?"

"Exactly." Malcolm replied. "Connor controls transitions. Terry widens the field. And Michael…" His gaze shifted toward him. "You dictate the tempo. Don't let them drag you into chaos."

"The second half isn't about who has more strength left." He looked at every player in the room. "It's about who still has the will to keep moving when their body wants to stop."

"So get back out there… and show them why you're the Lions!"

In unison the Lions gave a roaring cheer as they headed back out.

[Back on the field]

The fan's energy had returned, this time twice as much as before the break as the second half came near. The players exchanged nods of respect as they switched sides. The sound of the whistle indicated the beginning of the second half.

Immediately, the pace exploded back into motion.

The Leopards opened aggressively, moving the V-Ball quickly through the midfield in an attempt to overwhelm the Lions before they could settle into formation. But this time, the Lions looked different. More controlled. More focused. Connor directed movement from the backline with precise calls while Terry stretched the field wide, forcing space open across the wings.

The Leopards pressed forward with intent, their midfield moving like a single coordinated surge as they tried to overwhelm the Lions before they could fully settle. The V-Ball zipped between feet, each pass sharper than the last, cutting through space with increasing urgency. But the Lions no longer looked reactive they were structured, composed, waiting for the attack to reveal its shape

Connor's voice carried from the back, calm but precise, directing shifts in position as if drawing invisible lines across the field. Terry stretched wide on the left, forcing the Leopards to expand their formation, while Rick hovered centrally, reading the flow rather than chasing it.

Dan stood in the middle of it all calm, observing, he didn't move, didn't react but as soon as the ball was passed to him his Velocea spiked, signaling to the activation of his Innate Art.

Dan's Innate Art is the Chrono Frame Protocol

Chrono Frame Protocol is an Alpha Tier Innate Art that manipulates an opponent's perception by creating up to ten Chrono Frames, each storing 0.5 seconds of the user's movement data. As the user moves between these frames, opponents continue seeing outdated positional information, causing their visual and neural tracking to lag behind reality. Every reaction is directed toward a previous position rather than the user's current one, making accurate interception virtually impossible. Although it appears as if the user is splitting time into frames, the technique does not manipulate time itself, it exploits the delay between perception and reality using precisely controlled bursts of Velocea.

Using his Innate Art Dan zoomed past the Lions' defence leaving Gervan stunned, in the same moment he shot the ball sending it flying straight toward Lions' Ring.

"Goal!!! An amazing goal from the terrific Dan Fischer!!" the announcer exclaimed.

The stadium erupted the moment the Vortex Ring ignited, the sound washing over the field like a physical force. Blue and gold lights rippled across the arena as the scoreboard updated instantly 4-3, locking in the goal. Dan slowed to a stop, his breathing steady, expression unchanged as if what he had just done was inevitable rather than extraordinary.

Terry stood frozen for a second, still processing how he'd been bypassed, while Rick clicked his tongue in frustration, already turning to reset formation. Connor's voice cut through the Lions' side, sharp and immediate, calling them back into shape before the momentum could spiral further. Michael, however, didn't react to the goal itself his eyes stayed on Dan, narrowing slightly as he analyzed the movement that had broken through them. In the stands, the roars only grew louder, but on the field, the tension shifted. The Lions now understood something clearly, Dan wasn't just fast he was splitting seconds onto frames in which he move through.

The next kickoff wasn't rushed it was measured. A single touch from Connor, a controlled return from Rick, and then Michael received the ball in space. No flashy movement. No acceleration. Just perfect positioning.

A sudden shift of tempo, one pass from Michael split the midfield open, threading between two Leopards who had already committed forward. Rick met it instantly, striking with precision rather than power, sending the V-Ball arcing past the defensive line before they could reset. Terry received it and shot it perfectly, sending it flying toward the ring.

The V-Ball tore through the air, spinning violently as Terry's strike climbed toward the Vortex Ring with dangerous speed. For a split second, it looked like the Lions had finally broken through cleanly until the Leopards' backline reacted late, scrambling upward to close the gap. Mason moved with a burst of speed past them and kicked the ball a second time adding a boost shot that accelerated the ball even more sending it straight into the Vortex Ring.

The stadium erupted. The scores now tied 4-4

"An incredible display of teamwork and coordination" The announcer exclaimed. "The scores are now tied, with only under twenty minutes left which team will take the legendary Velocity Cup home?"

The next few minutes were a game of tug of war, both sides receiving and losing the ball to the other, nobody seemed to get the upperhand on the other and Velocea levels were running low. Legs shaking with exhaustion and breaths heavy.

With only fifteen minutes remaining, and the scores tied, one side had to score.

"Gervan, come here." Michael called out. Gervan jogged toward Michael, coming to a stop once he was near. "Yes? What is it captain?"

Michael whispered something so softly that it was meant only for Gervan's ears. But it didn't get past Dan and Jordan. "What do you think they're whispering about?" Jordan asked. "I have no idea, but I have a really bad feeling about it, tell the others to stay sharp." Dan replied. He looked at them once more sensing a spark so subtle it's easy to miss, but dismissed it as nothing.

The next ten minutes were brutal, Dan still had his eyes on Michael who hadn't touched the ball during the ten minutes, because every pass made to him was intercepted and when he did get the ball he was tackled and brought down.

"Good job gents keep the ball on the ground and away from him." Dan said.

Mason to Connor. "They're not giving Mike any room to breath." Connor chuckled as he replied. "Would you let a lion bite your leg? They're playing it safe, I'd do the same if I were them."

In the remaining last 5 minutes, the Leopards were in possession of the ball.

"I've gathered enough Velocea, I'll use my Innate Art to get us the last goal just create some space for me" Dan said to Derek. "You got it cap'n."

The Leopards' formation tightened as they moved forward creating space for their captain. Once the space was created, just like before Dan's Velocea spiked as he activated his Art, and seemingly out of nowhere Michael moved with insane speed, he swept the ball from Dan's feet leaving him and his teammates stunned.

"What the-!" Michael didn't hesitate or waste any time, he advanced, because the Leopards' players moved forward in order to create space for Dan only one of them was left to man the post Ethan, if Michael beat him he'd score and win it for his team.

"Fall back! Fall back!" Dan shouted at his teammates desperately chasing after Michael. But Michael didn't stop, when faced with Ethan he came to a halt breathing heavily.

"This is where you lose." Ethan said with a grin on his face. He moved in trying to catch Michael by surprise, only to be easily dodged.

Unfortunately the time taken by stopping and encountering the defender allowed for the Leopards' Jordan and Derek to reach Michael. As he began advancing once more they chased after him relentlessly. They squeezed him in between each other in an attempt to steal the ball, before he came to a stop looking back past Dan toward Gervan and nodding.

Gervan's Velocea spiked as he activated his Innate Art. Flashstep.

Flashstep is an Alpha Tier Innate Art that allows the user to make a mental marking of a location. By extracting kinetic friction from the surrounding electromagnetic fields using Velocea, the user surges toward the marked point at an unbelievable speed. The immediate displacement and replacement of the body's atoms creates the illusion of teleportation, even though the user has physically crossed the distance. This effect can also be extended to other individuals through Velocea contact.

Dan looked back at Gervan and remembered when he and Michael were whispering, he felt a subtle spark while they were talking but dismissed it and now realization hit. He moved at an incredible speed towards Gervan in hopes that he would disrupt him from fully activating his Art.

Ultimately he failed as Gervan activated his dormant Velocea flowing through Michael's body. Michael lifted the ball with his foot and kicked it into the sky, Gervan marked a spot in the sky just below the ball and used Flashstep to move Michael into the air with the ball.

Dan used Velocea enhanced speed to move through the field and leapt into the air positioning himself between Michael and the Vortex Ring.

Michael had only a bit of Velocea left, not enough for an Innate Art, so having Dan in between him and victory put him in a risky position. With no other choice at all he risked it all.

Knowing this Michael put all his focus and mastery into the little amount of Velocea he had and he entered Over-drive a very dangerous state of Velocea this led to him synchronizing completely with Velocea and gaining maximum control over his Velocea output. His Velocea went over the roof as he activated his Innate Art. Dimension Breaker.

Dimension breaker is a Zenith Tier Innate Art. It is a kick enchanched with Velocea so powerful that when the foot connects with the ball it sounds like shattered glass, the ball disappears for a solid 1.5 seconds before reappearing again sticking to it's movement like it never left, it almost like it leaves this dimension then returns hence the name, it is impossible to anticipate and even more impossible to block.

The ball flew straight toward Dan who braced for the impact to his surprise the ball disappeared, reappearing just behind him, it flew straight into the Vortex Ring as the time reached zero just in time.

For exactly five seconds the fans went silent and no later than five seconds later they erupted into cheers of excitement at the clear victory.

"Goal!!!" The announcer's voice boomed through the entire stadium mixing with the Lions' fans' cheers. Michael landed on his knees with a thud back on the field his breath shallow and heavy the mental and physical strain of Over-drive already starting. His teammates all sprinted toward him overjoyed.

"Mike you son of a gun!!!" Mason exclaimed. As they all stood around him. He looked up at them and grinned as Rick helped him up. "We did it" he said.

"This match will go down in history as the best of the best!! I mean did you see that!" The announcer exclaimed.

The stadium erupted in cheers and applause, the Lions' fans jumping up and down in excitement so hard they shook the ground. The Leopards' fans were divided, some clapping in respect others already exiting the stadium.

"Congratulations you beat us fair and square." Dan said as he approached the Lions. "Thanks... you guys played incredibly as well." Michael replied holding out his hand for a handshake.

For a few tense seconds, Dan didn't move but then he held out his hand and shook Michaels. "If we ever play again, I promise we won't lose a second time." Dan said in a playful serious manner. "For some reason I believe that." Michael said chuckling. "But we won't be easy then either."

Dan smiled and turned away. "And Stein... congratulations I heard you're a dad, I know I'm a month late but, better late than never right?" Michael chuckled once more before replying. "Yeah, thanks... see you around Fischer."

A few moments later the Lapse Lions stood in the middle of the field atop the podium.

"They fought hard to be here!" The announcer began. "They dominated every single team in the competition and won... ladies and gentlemen, your new Velocity World Champions!!!"

As the final words left his mouth the stadium erupted into cheers, applause and tears of joy. Michael lifted the cup as celebrations began but the strain from entering Over-drive was immense.

Rick noticed, "You alright man?" He asked concern on his face. "Yeah, just a little dizzy."

[A week later, Stein Estate]

"I'm sorry, Mr. Stein... the results are still the same. There still isn't a single drop of Velocea in your system." Docter Rene said. Michael sat on a couch arms crossed. "Yeah... thanks anyway Rene." He stood up turning to walk away his expression unreadable. "Michael... I'm really sorry." She added before leaving.

He exited the study a few seconds after her, his wife Elena holding their son Jason. "Still bad news?" Elena asked. Michael smiled trying to stay strong for his family. "It doesn't have to be... just depends on how you look at it." He replied. "Besides, I get to spend more time with you two now, that would make you happy right?" He added walking towards his wife and child. "It would... but would it make you happy?" Elena asked.

Michael was willing to sacrifice his entire career to win the Cup for his team and reach his goal. He achieved his dream... but at what cost.

[Apex Dome Stadium]

Michael sat alone on one of the stadium seats looking out at the pitch. When he was approached by Caleb Royce, President of the WVA [World Velocity Authority]. Royce sat next to him not saying anything at first.

"I heard what happened." Caleb began, voice calm, like a man used to commanding high ranking officials in meetings, it wasn't demanding though, it was gentle. "I heard that you're retiring too." Michael exhaled before speaking. "Yeah, it's not like I have a choice this is a brutal sport I'd be dead in the first 5 minutes of playing without Velocea." Caleb chuckled. "You're right, this is a deadly sport. But here's the thing Michael," he turned in his seat facing Michael. "you're a very rare person to find in this sport of ours, you're a one of a kind. It's truly sad to see you go like this, but this doesn't have to be the end, we could use a man of your talent and experience on the board." Michael looked at him trying to anticipate his next words. Caleb stood up and turned away.

"From the moment we acknowledged your presence on the pitch we reserved a seat for you on the board waiting for a day like this one... well not one like this exactly but you know what I mean, now you have a choice, do you want to leave forever, or do you want to continue doing what you love in a different field?"

Michael stood up facing Caleb's back clearly undertsanding him. "I appreciate that." Michael said. "Besides, the Stein name will hopefully live on through your son." Caleb added before disappearing into the shadows of the stadium.

Michael was left standing alone, with this opportunity given to him by the President of Velocity himself. And the thought of his son being his successor brought a smile upon his face almost as if seeing Jason succeeding him.

Michael would announce his retirement a few days later and was welcomed into the Velocity Board. At only twenty-six years old he'd lead his team to the finals and won, they'd conquered every team they faced and dominated every game they played he achieved incredible feats at a young age a true legend indeed.

The world will always remember Michael Stein as the man who conquered Velocity and set new standards for the upcoming generation.
