While the Ebon Meridian enforcement elder descended through Nerath's atmosphere, the first report of the disturbance had already reached the deepest layer of the station that served as the sect's headquarters.
The outer regions of the immense structure contained cities, transit formations, training territories, and docking fields capable of receiving fleets from throughout Valtheris, but none of that movement reached the chamber built around its central energy core. Dark-gold radiance flowed soundlessly beyond the transparent walls, feeding countless meridian-like channels that carried mana toward every layer of the station. At the center of that quiet chamber, Sect Leader Orveth sat alone upon a circular platform suspended above the core.
Orveth possessed four long arms and a tall body formed from translucent black flesh. Thin lines of dark-gold energy moved beneath his skin like living meridians, separating and rejoining whenever they reached one of his many joints, while a single vertical golden eye occupied the center of a face that held no other visible features. Three of his hands rested upon different sections of the platform. The fourth remained raised before a projection of Nerath as an intelligence disciple completed his report.
"Imperial Commissioner Deyran's life-signature was extinguished inside Avaris's governing district," the disciple said. "The formation record attributes the attack to a member of the Solvaren governing council. Multiple Solvaren domains activated immediately afterward, and the inner city entered an emergency seal. We cannot yet determine whether the elder acted alone or whether a broader rebellion has begun."
The dark-gold lines within Orveth's body continued their slow circulation. "What response has been dispatched?"
"The enforcement elder assigned to Keldovan territory was already within transfer range. He has entered Nerath's atmosphere alongside the first imperial division and will secure the governing district until the complete record can be recovered."
"Do we possess anything beyond the formation summary?"
"No, Sect Leader. We have yet to receive further information regarding the circumstances surrounding the assassination. The enforcement elder should provide an updated report once the governing district is secured."
The formation spread across Avaris monitored events that mattered to Ebon Meridian: attacks upon registered authorities, disruptions to protected production, unauthorized departures, large-scale domain activity, and interference with the covenant formations themselves. It did not listen inside every private hall occupied by millions of clan members. It had therefore recorded the fact of Deyran's assassination without preserving the reason for it.
"You may leave," Orveth said.
The intelligence disciple bowed deeply and withdrew through the dark-gold doorway. Once the entrance sealed behind him and silence returned to the central chamber, Orveth lowered his fourth hand and continued regarding the projection of Nerath without moving from the platform.
Throughout his life, Orveth had always preferred control and business over actual war. He lived in a universe where lasting authority ultimately depended upon strength, but the strength he cultivated for Ebon Meridian did not come primarily from sending fleets to conquer every useful world it encountered. It came from covenants.
Orveth spent considerable personal attention identifying clans, sects, empires, and developing powers while they still needed resources Ebon Meridian could provide. His sect supplied cultivation resources, protected trade routes, artifacts, inscribers, military deterrence, and political support, while the recipient accepted contractual obligations that appeared insignificant beside the immediate benefits being offered. A struggling clan rarely objected to surrendering a modest percentage of its production in exchange for surviving a stronger enemy. A young empire rarely considered privileged trade access excessive when Ebon Meridian's support could secure its borders and open routes that would otherwise remain closed.
The true value appeared generations later.
As those institutions expanded and descendants inherited arrangements they had never personally negotiated, restrictions that might once have provoked resistance gradually became routine procedures enforced by the institution's own leaders. Administrators learned to calculate Ebon Meridian's allocation before distributing their own resources. Imperial courts incorporated covenant obligations into local law. Clan elders taught younger generations which permissions were necessary before changing professions, leaving territories, or transferring protected inheritances. Ebon Meridian received the obedience it required without repeatedly sacrificing disciples, fleets, or worlds to impose that obedience through war.
The Keldovan Empire was one of the clearest products of that method. Its rulers administered a vast region of Valtheris, collected the taxes, maintained the transfer routes, suppressed local instability, and presented themselves as the sovereign authority governing their worlds. Yet Ebon Meridian received priority allocations from imperial resources, privileged access to its markets and transit formations, suitable recruits from its population, protected stations throughout its territory, and an empire willing to enforce the sect's covenants as part of its own law. Keldovan possessed the throne visible to its people, while Ebon Meridian continued receiving the greater return from the civilization built around it.
The Solvaren Clan had never required Orveth's direct attention before Hestia's reappearance. Its affairs had been administered almost entirely through the Keldovan Empire, and although its alchemical production was profitable, one prosperous clan represented little compared with the wealth and obedience generated by entire empires incorporated into Ebon Meridian's wider structure.
That changed when reports revealed that the vanished patriarch named in the old covenant had somehow appeared again as the ruler of Andromeda.
The organization Hestia led had once been only a Lesser Minor Sect, yet its rise had occurred with such impossible speed that every surviving intelligence report seemed incomplete. Two Astral rulers had emerged from it. The surrounding supremacy powers had fallen. An entire galaxy had come beneath its authority, and afterward even three envoys belonging to established Lesser Major Sects had been humiliated and forced to withdraw.
From the moment Orveth confirmed Hestia's identity, he began involving himself directly. He believed the ancient Solvaren covenant could become a path toward something far more valuable than the clan that originally signed it.
Orveth had never expected Hestia to surrender every Crimson Vital world the instant an impossible debt was placed before her. Immediate foreclosure would destroy much of what made Andromeda desirable, and he had never intended to turn the claim into a war unless there was no alternative. His plans for Hestia and the Crimson Vital Sect extended across thousands upon thousands of years that had yet to pass.
Formal recognition of Ebon Meridian's standing would come first, followed by privileged access to Andromeda's routes and markets. Covenant offices and inspectors could enter Crimson Vital territory afterward, placing Ebon Meridian inside the galaxy without requiring the conquest of a single world. Commercial agreements would gradually open access to its alchemical and artifact economy, while the same offices quietly investigated how a former Lesser Minor Sect had produced two Astral cultivators and seized an entire galaxy with a speed that should not have been possible.
Given enough millennia, access would become reliance. Reliance would become influence, and influence would eventually allow Crimson Vital to be guided into the same prosperous subordination that supported Ebon Meridian throughout Valtheris.
Every stage of that plan, however, depended upon the Solvaren Clan remaining stable.
Now the clan appeared to be rebelling at precisely the moment its covenant had become valuable.
Orveth disliked variables of that kind. A single uncontrolled fracture could spread through arrangements compounded across millions of years, particularly if other subordinate powers began wondering whether the obligations they had inherited were equally vulnerable. Worse, if the Solvaren Clan openly rejected Ebon Meridian at the exact moment Hestia was being confronted with its covenant, she would see weakness where Orveth intended her to see inevitability.
His vertical golden eye narrowed. Several of the dark-gold meridian lines beneath his translucent flesh tightened around the joints of his lowered hands before relaxing again.
One hand moved across the circular platform, and a private UNI-OS interface opened before him.
"Kethren," Orveth said. "Come to the central chamber."
His personal disciple arrived through the doorway a short time later and lowered his head. Kethren held the pressure of an Astral cultivator completely within his body, but the condensed stability surrounding his consciousness revealed that he had already awakened the Chime.
"You will go to Nerath," Orveth said. "Determine whether one elder assassinated Deyran for a personal grievance or whether a meaningful portion of the Solvaren Clan has turned against us. Recover the governing-hall records and take authority over the response when you arrive."
"If the governing council supported the assassination, do I preserve its authority or replace it?" Kethren asked.
"Preserve the clan, not necessarily its present council. Deyran's death belongs to Keldovan, but I will not allow imperial anger to destroy an institution that remains useful to us." Orveth's single eye remained fixed upon Nerath. "If dissatisfaction can be converted into loyalty through resources, rank, protection, or revised service allocations, determine the price and pay it. Separate those who can still be brought beneath the covenant from those who cannot. The enforcement elder can contain their violence. Your purpose is to preserve the institution."
Kethren bowed more deeply. "I understand, Master."
Dark-gold radiance gathered around him as the station's transfer formation opened beyond the chamber. He stepped into it without another word and disappeared.
...
The Ebon Meridian enforcement elder lowered his raised hand, and the willforce technique he had prepared became complete.
Multiple blades made of willforce, which were invisible to all under the chime, gathered around the elder.
The moment the elder fixed his intent upon Hestia, the willforce blades moved forward within the Metaphysical Plane, completely ignoring the ordinary space, and struck Hestia's consciousness directly.
Her awareness shuddered beneath the first impact. The dense but unrefined willforce surrounding her mind surged instinctively against the technique, crushing several blades beneath its raw weight and forcing others away from the deeper layers of her consciousness. Yet her resistance possessed no practiced architecture. It defended every direction with the same pressure, while the elder's technique concentrated its force along the narrowest weaknesses he could find.
One hair-thin blade slipped through.
Pain cut across Hestia's awareness without touching her body. Her thoughts broke apart for a fraction of a second, the mana supporting her flight lost its direction, and she dropped several meters before regaining control. A thin line of blood emerged beneath one nostril as she forced her body to become still again.
"Raw conviction is not mastery," the enforcement elder said. The remaining blades shifted around the boundary of her mind, their structure tightening as he prepared to drive them inward again. "You entered our territory and raised your will against us. Ebon Meridian will now decide whether you leave it."
Hestia gave him no answer. The pain had disrupted her concentration, but it had not altered the decision beneath it. Everything surrounding her mind gathered more densely around the same fixed intent, and every blade pressing inward compressed that defense further.
The elder directed the technique inward a second time. More blades cracked beneath the weight gathered around Hestia's mind, but several edges cut deeper than before, narrowing her awareness and sending another violent tremor through it. Her body remained in place as the defense compressed again, rising many times beyond what her ordinary control should have permitted until no untouched portion of her awareness remained.
There was no longer space for it to become denser without changing what it was.
With nowhere remaining for that power to gather, a tremendous impact erupted inside Hestia's consciousness. She felt as though an invisible bell had been struck somewhere beyond the deepest layer of her mind. The vibration passed through everything she considered herself, gathered the scattered force of her intent into a single center, and returned with even greater clarity as an ethereal chime resonated.
CHIME!
The sound did not emerge from Hestia's body or travel through Nerath's atmosphere. It appeared directly inside the consciousness of every cultivator upon the planet. Solvaren cultivators throughout Avaris froze beneath the same clear note. The imperial crews occupying the orbital lanes stopped before their command formations, while every cultivator aboard the dark-gold Ebon Meridian vessel heard the chime from within their own minds.
Its resonance did not end at Nerath. The same note manifested within travelers crossing the neighboring systems, inside distant planets, and within cultivators meditating in sealed chambers no physical sound could have entered. It echoed again and again across Valtheris until beings nearly halfway across the galaxy opened their eyes and tried to locate an origin the chime itself gave them no direction to find.
For the first time, Hestia saw willforce. The pressure that had surrounded her as an unseen weight now appeared as translucent currents shaped by the Ebon Meridian elder's intent. She saw the dozens of blades embedded against the outer boundary of her consciousness, saw the narrow architecture directing their combined pressure, and understood how each edge had searched for the weakest points within her unrefined defense.
Something else was forming deeper within her awareness. The willforce gathered by the breakthrough condensed toward one location until a single golden dot appeared within her mind, quiet and impossibly dense despite its size.
Hestia recognized it immediately. It's the Chime! Its appearance meant that she had reached the Chime of Consciousness.
The breakthrough had been forced through while another cultivator's technique remained embedded against her mind. New perception flooded Hestia faster than she could interpret it, while the golden dot continued drawing the amplified currents of her willforce into a stable center. She closed her eyes and turned her attention inward. She needed a few moments to stabilize herself and take control of what she could now see, but for those moments, she could not divide her concentration between stabilization and battle.
The enforcement elder understood her condition as clearly as she did.
Shock held him motionless for a second. An unknown Astral cultivator had crossed the Chime beneath his own attack, and the resonance of her breakthrough had extended far beyond anything he had expected from an ordinary first-stage ascension. Her raw willforce had already fractured most of his technique before she possessed the perception or control granted by the Chime. Once she stabilized, experience alone might no longer be enough to restrain her.
His gaze flicked toward the Rule Stage man who floated several paces behind her. The companion had remained where Hestia ordered him to stay, and nothing about his pressure suggested that he could interfere with a battle between Astral beings. The elder made his decision before she could complete the breakthrough. Killing intent entered his willforce as every surviving blade withdrew from Hestia's mind and merged into one long condensed blade, prepared to pierce her consciousness while her attention remained turned inward.
"YOU DARE!"
The words slammed into the elder's consciousness. The killing blade unravelled as a willforce rose from behind Hestia, extending beyond every limit his Chime-stage perception could measure.
He saw the rule stage man behind the woman slowly float forward. With each inch he closed, something vast and incomprehensible bore down upon the elder's consciousness, and he felt like he would die at any moment now.
