The private charter descended through thin clouds, New York City stretching beneath them in a lattice of light. Inside the cabin, the air held a quiet mix of calm and anticipation. Kira opened the cockpit door, her tone precise and composed. "Ladies, I've arranged a local liaison vehicle with the local branch of Midnight Industries here in New York City. We're just beginning operations here, so forgive me if the car is a little bit conspicuous."
Through the oval window, Harley and Pamela caught sight of the waiting vehicle outside — a red Ferrari gleaming under the runway lights. Pamela exhaled sharply, her patience thinning. "Kira, you know what to do."
"All right. All right — I know what to do," Kira replied evenly. She led them through the private terminal and into the parking lot, trading luxury for subtlety. By the time they reached the exit gate, the team sat packed inside an old four-door Ford Focus from the early 2000s, its worn dashboard vibrating softly with age.
"Ah, nothing beats a twenty-plus-year-old Ford," Pamela said with quiet satisfaction as the car rolled forward.
"Found on road dead," Harley muttered, half amused.
Pamela gave her a look. "Nobody ever pays attention to an inconspicuous old fuel-efficient car. Ford is the definitive getaway vehicle. Every person has one, and people instinctively ignore one. If a cop sees us in a Ford Focus, they'll instinctively look the other way."
"You're a Ford fanatic, aren't you Pamela?" Harley asked.
"I am not a Ford fanatic," Pamela said, feigning offense. "I just appreciate classic American vehicles."
"Whatever. Next time we're taking a Toyota."
"As if we'd ever be seen dead in a Toyota."
"Next time — A Toyota."
Pamela sighed, giving in. "All right, all right — next time we'll take a Toyota. You get one, I get one."
Harley leaned toward the window. "I think Barbara will want a Cadillac."
Pamela slumped back dramatically. "My—both my girlfriends have no taste in cars. Woe is me."
Kira kept her eyes on the road. "I think your future harem member, Pamela, is going to want a Dodge Charger."
"You shut up," Pamela said, half snapping, half laughing, pretending to faint against her seat.
"You're not fooling anyone," Harley said flatly.
Pamela sat up again, letting a small smile return. "Fine, fine. Anyways — back to business."
Her tone shifted as the hum of the road settled between them. "We are going to infiltrate the Museum of Modern Art. We are going to going under it, not over it. We'll use my midnight roses to bypass the protection around the vaults and get in quieter and more elegantly than any museum heist in recorded history."
Barbara looked skeptical. "We're going to get inside using a plant? How does that work exactly?"
"Just wait — you'll see," Pamela said, her confidence effortless.
"You're dreaming," Harley said.
Pamela leaned closer, lowering her voice until it nearly brushed Harley's ear. "I only dream of you."
Harley's expression softened. "Aw."
Pamela's hand began to wander upward, tracing the line of Harley's thigh before a sharp slap stopped her.
"Knock it off," Harley said firmly. "We are doing serious things right now. No shenanigans."
Pamela sighed, amusement in her voice. "All right."
