Dr. Jason Woodrue was still standing there in stunned silence, the charred husks of his wolf abominations steaming around his feet, when Pamela stepped forward. Barbara and Harley flanked her, their faces calm and focused. The soft click of their boots against the tiled floor echoed through the lab as Woodrue backed up until his shoulders met the cold concrete wall behind him. His hands shook violently.
"No… you can't do anything to me," he stammered, his voice cracking. "You can't touch me! Batman will know it was you!"
Pamela stopped a few feet away, her tone even, her expression unreadable. "Oh, don't worry. Batman won't know a thing. It's been months since you last dealt with us. He'll never suspect we were here. We wiped every trace of surveillance on the way in here, and we're incognito. Nobody will recognize us."
Woodrue's pupils shrank as panic clawed across his face. "No… no, this is impossible!"
Pamela's gaze didn't waver. "Oh, it's very possible, Dr. Woodrue. Harley, do your thing with your bat. You wanted to use it."
Harley rolled her shoulders, resting the bat across her back. "Okay, toots." She walked forward until she stood directly before the trembling man. "Hey, old man. I heard you experimented on my two lovely friends — especially my new girlfriend, Pamela Isley. As a proud member of her harem, I have to stand up for her."
Woodrue snarled through his fear. "What are you talking about? Why did you bring a clown here, Pamela?"
"Hey, hey, I'm talking to you!" Harley barked. She swung the bat in a wide arc. The impact cracked against his kneecap with a wet crunch. Woodrue screamed and dropped to the floor, clutching his shattered leg. Harley tilted his chin up with the bat's tip, her voice suddenly cold. "You abducted my girlfriend. You experimented on her. You turned her into someone who can control plants. I should be thankful to you… but you still abducted her. And that's unacceptable in any clown's book."
She swung again, the bat smashing into his mouth with brutal force. Teeth flew across the floor white and gold teeth fragments scattering in every direction.
Woodrue's voice turned to a hoarse shriek. "No! Agh! You bitch! You fucking bitch!"
Harley stared down at the scattered teeth. "I'm used to having plenty of gold now your teeth dont interest me," she said lightly. "I'm not even interested in petty little trinkets like these."
Barbara crouched beside her, amusement showing in her eyes. "Harley, you would never touch gold teeth. Come on, be realistic."
Harley nodded once. "You're right. I'm sure the Joker would, though. He'll take anything shiny."
Pamela crossed her arms. "What is he, a frickin' leprechaun or a clown?"
"Sometimes I think he's a leprechaun clown," Harley replied, tapping her bat against the floor. "Or a clown leprechaun. One of the two. He just loves shiny things."
Pamela's tone softened. "I can see that."
Woodrue whimpered beneath them, his breath coming in shallow gasps. Pamela stepped forward and looked down at him. "Dr. Woodrue, you've been completely disabled by us. And now, it's time for me to get my revenge. I bet you didn't think, all those months ago when you abducted me and turned me into a plant-controlling freak, that I'd come back here to finish this fight. Most villains never do. But I'm not like them." She lowered her voice. "We, the members of Midnight Mayhem, finish what we start. You started this, and now I'm finishing it. Prepare to die, Dr. Woodrue."
Pamela lifted her left wrist. The Midnight Rose bracelet — a green vine banded with ten small black blossoms — began to glow faintly. The vine inside Woodrue's body, planted there months ago, answered her call.
Woodrue convulsed. "What… what's happening—"
Pamela's tone was cool. "I won't even feed on your vitality this time, Dr. Woodrue. You're too disgusting for me to eat."
He screamed as the Midnight Rose came alive within him. Thick vines tore through his flesh, forcing their way out through his eyes, ears, and mouth. His chest split open with a sharp, tearing sound, and from within bloomed a single black flower, its petals glistening like oil. The bloom opened wider, swallowing what was left of him. In seconds, his body collapsed inwards, devoured from within until only smoking clothes remained.
Pamela exhaled and extended her wrist. The black flower withered instantly, shrinking down into a small rosebud that coiled back onto her bracelet. "Welcome home, my dear," she whispered.
The lab was silent except for the faint hiss of steam rising from the floor. Barbara turned toward the door. "Ladies, we've dealt with all the troublesome parts," Pamela said at last. "Now let's burn this place to the ground. I don't want anyone ever finding this man's research again. Fire is sometimes the best way to erase a loser like this—leaving no evidence behind."
Barbara reached into her satchel and pulled out a compact metal firebomb. "Way ahead of you. I whipped this puppy up this morning—a brand-new incendiary charge. I was planning to sell it in the Undercarriage to make us some extra money. That little place under Cars R Us is turning into a goldmine for our creations."
Pamela nodded once. "Excellent."
Barbara dropped the grenade beside the pile of Woodrue's empty clothes as they left. Outside, she pulled a black remote from her pocket, pressed the button, as the building behind them erupted into flames. A blast of hot air washed over them as orange light spilled out the shattered windows.
Harley looked back, her hair whipping in the wind. "Well, it's a good thing that building was completely abandoned."
Pamela's voice was calm. "I wouldn't sacrifice innocent people in a fire just to erase Woodrue. If he'd been hiding in a building full of people, we would have just walked away. But since there's nobody here, burning it down ensures our identities stay hidden."
Barbara smiled faintly. "Smart as always, Pamela."
