Chapter 116 - “Something Is Missing”

The silence didn't feel like peace.

It felt… watched.

Evelyn stood still, lantern raised, her breathing steadying—just slightly. The fragments no longer rushed them. They hovered at the edges of the room, shifting, whispering… waiting.

Leo leaned closer. "They stopped…"

"Not stopped," Alex whispered. "They're thinking."

The double remained a few steps away, observing everything with quiet interest.

Evelyn's fingers tightened around the lantern.

Something was wrong.

Not outside.

Inside.

"…I'm missing something," she said slowly.

Leo frowned. "What do you mean?"

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Focused.

There was a gap.

Not a memory she couldn't access—but something that felt like it had been removed entirely.

"I can feel it," she said. "Like a space that used to be filled."

Alex's voice was quiet. "Maybe it's… something the manor took?"

Evelyn shook her head slightly.

"No."

Her eyes opened.

"The manor doesn't just take."

The lantern flickered once.

Then steadied.

"It stores."

The double's expression shifted—just slightly.

Interested.

Evelyn stepped forward.

For the first time since they entered this room, she didn't back away.

"What did you do to me?" she asked.

The double smiled faintly.

"Not just you."

A pause.

"To all of you."

The fragments around them twitched.

Then, slowly—

One of them stepped forward.

Not aggressive.

Careful.

It stopped in front of Alex.

Alex froze. "Uh… what is it doing?"

The fragment tilted its head.

And then—

It spoke.

Soft.

Broken.

"Do you remember… the stairs?"

Alex blinked.

"What?"

The fragment's voice trembled.

"We went down them… together…"

Alex shook his head. "I don't know what you're talking about—"

But even as he said it—

Something tugged at the back of his mind.

A memory.

Faint.

Unstable.

A staircase… dark… endless…

Leo grabbed Alex's shoulder. "Don't listen to it."

But Alex hesitated.

Just for a second.

And the fragment smiled.

Because that was all it needed.

The air in the room shifted.

And suddenly—

Alex staggered.

Gripping his head. "No—wait—why do I—"

Evelyn moved instantly.

She stepped between Alex and the fragment, holding the lantern up.

"Stop," she said firmly.

The light flared.

The fragment recoiled slightly.

Not in fear.

In recognition.

Evelyn's voice softened—but stayed strong.

"You're not taking anything else."

The fragment's smile faded.

And for a moment—

It looked almost… sad.

"I'm not taking," it whispered.

"I'm returning what was given."

The double spoke quietly from behind them.

"The more you resist… the more you lose."

Evelyn didn't turn.

"I don't care."

The lantern burned brighter in her hand now.

The shadows around them stretched—but hesitated.

"Then you are close," the double said.

Evelyn's jaw tightened.

"Close to what?"

The double's eyes flickered.

"Remembering."

A beat.

And then—

The floor beneath them shifted.

Not cracking.

Not breaking.

But changing.

Like the room itself was rearranging its own truth.

The fragments froze.

Even the double went still.

Because for the first time—

Something in the manor had changed.

And it wasn't because of it.

Evelyn's breath slowed.

"…What did I just do?"

The lantern pulsed once.

And somewhere deep within the manor—

Something answered.
