Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Training the Flame

As a new dawn broke over New Haven, the first rays of sunlight reflected off its gleaming glass towers, while factories on the city's outskirts disturbed the air with the hum of jewel-powered energy systems harvested from the gates. Ethan Clark returned to his cramped apartment after his first victory in a C-rank gate, where he had battled three Level 3 shadow wolves. Standing before his simple wooden table, he held five small red crystals collected from the fight—glowing gems the size of walnuts that emitted faint light pulses resembling lifebeats. Ethan felt that these crystals, embodying the destructive energy of the monsters, might hold the key to understanding the black Omnitrix fastened to his wrist, a device resembling an ordinary watch under the soft morning light streaming through the window, yet concealing mysterious powers.

He pointed to the Omnitrix's outer ring with his finger, and a clear blue holographic screen materialized before him, displaying the information with precision:

- **Level**: 1

- **Points**: 150 out of 500 (to reach Level 2)

- **Available Creature**: Heatblast

- **Status**: A new creature unlocks every 5 levels. Points double per level (500, 1000, 2000, etc.). Each use enhances power and experience, gradually increasing transformation time. Warning: Mission failure results in a 50-point deduction or a 24-hour creature lock.

Ethan realized his journey would be long and complex, requiring him to accumulate points to unlock a new creature like Humungousaur at Level 5, though he saw the necessity of focusing on developing his current abilities. After his initial experience with Heatblast, it became clear that his natural magic as a C-rank fire mage, derived from the awakening ritual, was limited in power and required prolonged concentration, yet it held the potential to grow with training to reach higher ranks like A-rank in the future. The Omnitrix, however, offered a superior external power, granting temporary dominance but constrained by time and point limits, making it a potent yet risky tool.

Determined, Ethan decided to head to an abandoned park outside the city, a region left desolate by gates decades ago, ideal for training without endangering residents. He rented an electric bike from a public transport hub and arrived after a short ride. The dry trees with broken branches swayed in the wind, the ground covered with a fine layer of gray dust, while the ruins of collapsed buildings, cloaked in glowing green moss, added an eerie touch to the landscape. He chose an open space away from the debris and sat on a large boulder to begin his training.

Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath to focus on the magical energy stirring within him since the ritual. Slowly raising his right hand, he felt a faint warmth gather in his palm. With increasing effort, he released a small flame, no larger than his hand, scorching the dry grass before him and leaving a faint burning smell. "This won't be enough against strong monsters," he murmured to himself, recalling the speed of the shadow dogs and the sharpness of their fangs. Deciding to enhance his training with the Omnitrix, he touched it, and the ring spun with a soft hum, projecting a clear hologram of **Heatblast**.

Upon pressing the button, a green flash erupted, transforming his body—his skin turned volcanic and glowing, his head crowned with red flames, and his hands emitted slightly stronger heat thanks to prior use. He unleashed a fire wave toward a distant rock, shattering it into small fragments. "Good, but I can improve my control," he said with enthusiasm, determined to refine his precision. He trained for hours, experimenting with shaping the fire—precise circles, straight lines, and a thin heat barrier around himself. With each use of Heatblast, his reactions improved, the flames responding faster to his will. After repeated attempts, he formed a small floating fireball, but it exploded seconds later, scorching the ground and leaving a black mark. Fatigue crept in, yet he persisted, aware that his C-rank magic required significant development to serve as a true alternative to the Omnitrix.

The next day, **Clara Winter** summoned him to the Hunters' Headquarters, a massive stone building in the city center, surrounded by jewel-powered energy stations and walls etched with scenes of ancient gate battles. In her office, she sat behind a wooden desk holding a small energy screen, her analytical eyes fixed on it with focus. She wore a dark green robe signifying her rank as an overseer, her tightly pulled black hair revealing strong, decisive features. "Ethan, your performance in the first gate was acceptable for a C-rank," she began in a calm yet firm tone, glancing at a report on her screen. "But this black watch you wear raises my suspicions. Where did you get it, and why does it differ from traditional tools?" She pointed to the Omnitrix, which appeared as an ordinary watch under the room's light, her curiosity and doubt evident. Ethan lied with feigned confidence, "A family heirloom," smiling to distract her, though his heart raced. Clara raised an eyebrow, studying his face for a moment, then said, "I'll let it pass for now, but you must prove you deserve this power. You have a training mission tomorrow—a C-rank gate outside the city showing signs of Level 3 shadow wolves, triggered by accumulated magical energy. Take your team, and don't fail, for failure could endanger the city." Ethan left the headquarters, pondering her words, realizing the upcoming mission would be a true test of his abilities.

He decided to use the remaining night to sharpen his skills, returning to the abandoned park with a small bag containing a water bottle and light food, prepared for a long session. He chose a new spot near crumbling walls covered in glowing moss, which provided natural illumination in the dark. Sitting on the ground, he picked up a small stone, attempting to melt it with his magical flame. After several failed tries, he succeeded, though his hand burned from the effort, prompting him to mutter, "I need to endure more." Transforming into Heatblast, he directed his enhanced heat at a rusty metal piece from an old machine, melting it with precision. The Omnitrix chimed: "Power increased by 5%, Experience +10 points."

He continued training until midnight, forming a denser heat barrier to protect himself and using his natural magic to shield his body from a cold breeze. Exhaustion overwhelmed him, but he felt this effort would prepare him for the next day. He returned to his apartment and fell asleep quickly, though his dreams were filled with images of evolved wolves and the sounds of fierce battles.

In the morning, he awoke early, his body heavy from the long training hours. He met Alex and Lia at the designated gate, a glowing red circle 20 meters in diameter, surrounded by thick gray mist, located in a deserted suburb once part of an old port, now covered in dust and ruins. Alex held a new energy analyzer equipped with a red crystal, saying in a calm, scientific tone, "The readings show three evolved shadow wolves, Level 3, C-rank. I'll pinpoint their weak points with the device." Lia, adding energy bombs to her magical bow, added with cautious emotion, "I'll slow them if they get too close—be careful, Ethan."

They entered the dungeon, a vast cave with walls adorned with glowing red and blue crystals and a hot pool emitting a pungent sulfurous steam. The Omnitrix announced clearly: "New mission: Defeat three evolved shadow wolves, Level 3, C-rank. Reward: 100 × 3 × 1.5 (C-rank multiplier) × 1.1 (10% boost based on your level) = 495 points. Warning: Transformation limited to 35 seconds, increasing with each level."

The wolves appeared—larger and faster than shadow dogs, with glossy black bodies and energy-glowing claws, their red eyes gleaming in the dim light, and their fangs emitting a sharp hiss. Alex scanned the beasts with his device, confirming their weak points were in their bellies, where energy was least concentrated. Lia launched an energy bomb, which exploded in red fire, slowing the first wolf with a low yelp. The other two charged at Ethan immediately.

Ethan first tried his natural magic, raising his hand to gather heat, but the weak flame had no effect on the nearest wolf. "This won't work now," he whispered, a step behind. Turning to the Omnitrix, he spun the ring, and a **Heatblast** hologram appeared. Pressing it, he transformed in a green flash—his skin turned volcanic, his head ablaze, and his hands emitted enhanced heat from his training (power +10%). He unleashed an explosive fire wave, reducing the first wolf to ash and leaving a red crystal. "25 seconds!" the device warned. The second attacked from the side, but he raised a heat barrier, slowing it, then kicked it with his fiery foot, shattering it into dust and yielding another crystal. "10 seconds!" The third approached, but Lia's precise arrow pierced its head, ending it swiftly.

Ethan reverted to human form, panting heavily, sweat dripping onto the damp ground, his body trembling from exhaustion. Alex ran to him, collecting the three crystals with shaky hands, their red glow faint and steady. "Excellent, Ethan! You're improving quickly thanks to the training!" he said with admiration, studying the Omnitrix closely. Lia, wiping her sweat with concern, added, "But don't rely on it too much—your own magic will be the foundation of your strength one day." The device chimed: "Mission complete. +495 points. Power increased by 10%, Experience +20 points, Transformation time now 40 seconds." The updated stats:

- **Level**: 2

- **Points**: 45/1000

Ethan looked at Alex and Lia, who exchanged proud glances, then at the crystals in Alex's hands. This second battle marked a clear step toward strength, and his training would gradually build his skills, bolstering his confidence to face future gate challenges.
