Year 30 August
Konoha was still bustling with celebration. Nawaki's birthday had ended a week ago, yet the village still pulsed with festivity. Lanterns no longer lined the streets, but the glow of vendors and shops illuminated the autumn night. Laughter spilled from taverns, music drifted faintly through the autumn air, and the warmth of community lingered long after the official festivities had ended.
Within the Uchiha compound, however, the atmosphere was divided. Most of the district was solemn and quiet, its residents reserved and watchful. Yet one place broke the silence. Uchiha Gourmet, a restaurant that had become a rare center of mirth. Villagers mingled with clansmen, sharing food and stories, and the warmth of the hearth and companionship melting their cold outer front.
At one table sat four unlikely companions:
Uchiha Shinichi posing a calm exterior masked with resignation and amusement.
Hatake Sakumo ruffling his silver hair with feigned ignorance.
Uchiha Keiko nervously twisting her raven hair while keeping a straight face.
And the culprit of this event.
Senju Kaya humming in satisfaction, all the while brimming with energy.
Kaya leaned forward, starting the conversation. "See, Shin-kun? Isn't this great? A moment of relaxation and bonding between comrades."
Shinichi gave a small sigh. Sakumo sat beside him holding in his laughter, while Keiko crossed her arms, as she fixed her gaze on Kaya.
"Hmph. Dragging me here too... you really don't know when to stop, Senju," Keiko muttered. Her tone was sharp but not venomous.
Kaya grinned playfully, as she leaned into Keiko's shoulder. "Oh, come on, Keiko-chan. Don't be so cold. We're all shinobi of Konoha. Rivals, friends- it's all the same."
she then leaned back while lightly tapping on Keiko's cheek. "Besides, you look cute when you pout."
Keiko's cheeks flushed faintly, and she turned her head away. "T-tch! Don't think I came here to entertain you. Who knows what ridiculous non-sense you'd start without me... Just like this dinner."
But when Kaya leaned closer and whispered something, Keiko tugged on her sleeve and whispered back. "How the hell did you pull this off Kaya?"
Kaya raised a victory sign, winked, and smiled softly at her. "Shin-kun promised me this back during the exams. I had to chase him down for it."
Keiko rolled her eyes, but the corners of her lips betrayed the faintest smile.
Shinichi leaned back, watching them. 'From that bitch Keiko to Keiko-chan in less than a year...'
He remembered their not so friendly interaction during the Chunin exam. On the surface, they had been rivals; A Classic Senju and Uchiha clash. Yet now, their interaction carried a different weight. Keiko's words were edged with pride, but her tone lacked malice. Kaya's teasing was softened by familiarity. They sat together, laughing and bickering like old rivals turned reluctant companions.
It wasn't rare for Uchiha to bond with villagers, but with a Senju? That was unusual. Shinichi found himself quietly intrigued. He silently took a sip of teach as he watched the subtle shift in the two kunoichis relationship unfold before him.
Kaya's energy filled the table, Keiko's pride tried to mask her approval, Sakumo sat caught between them, silent in awkwardness but attentive, and Shinichi as always, kept his distance - yet he couldn't help but note the strange sisterhood forming between two girls who once seemed destined to clash.
As dishes arrived, the fragrance of grilled fish and steaming rice silenced the table. For a few minutes, they ate in quiet appreciation, the hearth's warmth mingling perfectly with the aroma and the amicable atmosphere.

When the plates were emptied, conversation resumed.
Kaya, crisscrossed her hands on her head as she leaned back, humming. "You know, it's funny. We all graduated the same year, but in such different ways."
Sakumo tilted his head, feigning ignorance. "Different ways?"
Kaya smirked. "Don't play dumb. Sakumo-kun and Shin-kun graduated early as a third grader. Meanwhile, Keiko-chan and I had to slog it out until fifth grade. We spent close to three years together in the Academy, but never crossed each other."
Keiko twisted a strand of her raven hair. "No. You barged into my classroom everyday, Kaya. Always showing off, always trying to prove something."
Kaya laughed, unashamed. "Well, someone had to keep the Uchiha on their toes. besides, you were the one glaring at me every time."
Keiko flushed faintly, crossing her arms. "Tch. I wasn't glaring. I was... observing."
Sakumo chuckled quietly, finally breaking his silence. "Observing, huh? I remember Keiko-san and Kaya-san arguing in the courtyard. Half the Academy thought you'd end up fighting for real."
Kaya leaned on the table, cupping her chin in her hand, smiling radiantly. "We did spar. And I won."
Keiko shot her a sharp look. "I won more times than you."
"Numbers don't matter." Kaya grinned. "Only the last result counts, Keiko-chan."
Shinichi took a bite of an orange served for dessert while watching them with quiet amusement. His Academy years were rather... uneventful. He didn't have a rival to push him, and no proper sparring matches to remember.
But then Kaya turned her attention back to Shinichi. "Shin-kun was different, though. Always serious, always ahead of everyone. You barely spoke, unless you were took over the class as an 'instructor'."
"Instructor?" Shinichi shrugged. "I had other priorities. I didn't want to attract too much attention."
Keiko's gaze flicked toward him, her voice turning softer than usual. "But we all knew Shinichi-san. Even if you didn't talk much. Shinichi-san was... hard to ignore."
Kaya rolled her eyes. "Yeah, of course. Shin-kun was the leader of the group before the academy reform. So much for not wanting attention, right?"
Sakumo nodded. "Yeah. You didn't join the small talks, but you definitely lead us around more than the teachers did. Half of the new curriculums probably came from your ideas."
Kaya and Keiko nodded their head vigorously in agreement.
Shinichi finished the orange, giving a self mocking smirk. What had felt natural to him back then had apparently made him stand out more than he realized.
The table fell into a brief silence, filled only by the crackles of hearth and murmur of background conversations. Four teens, once scattered across different grades, now sat together for the first time, recollecting the past. No longer as schoolmates, but as comrades who had grown up in the same halls, each carrying their own pride and memories of the Academy.
Keiko broke the ice. "Schinichi-san... I suppose you weren't as invisible as you thought."
Kaya rolled her head in exaggeration with a grin. "Oh, drop the -san already, Keiko-chan. We're on a date aren't we? That makes us closer than some random comrade number 1."
Sakumo chuckled. "She has a point. Honorifics feel stiff after all this talk."
Keiko hesitated as faint blush formed on her cheek, her pride warring with her embarrassment. Then as if making a big life changing decision, she declared. "...Fine. Shinichi---Kun, then."
Shinichi's lips curved into a faint smile. His reply was casual, but there was a deliberate edge to it. "If you insist. Keiko-nee"
Keiko's face flushed instantly, her composure breaking. "Wh-whaatt?!"
Kaya and Sakumo both froze. Their mouths agape.
Kaya recovered first, covering her mouth with a grin. "Wow... Shin-kun, I didn't know you had that kind of smoothness in you."
Sakumo remained stunned, blinking as if unsure whether to laugh or scold.
Shinichi shrugged lightly, peeling a orange with a kunai with unhurried precision. "It's just a small change of pace. I realized I've been too... reserved? Eating and socializing with others... it's not a bad thing. I thought I should enjoy and savor this peace while it lasts."
Kaya's groaned, slumping forward. "You know, for a teenager, you sound exactly like the oldman back in my clan."
Shinichi popped a slice of orange into his mouth, unbothered. "Perhaps. But even old men know the value of quiet moments.
Sakumo, recovering from his shock, blinked and slowly nodded in silent understanding.
While Keiko with her face flushed and steaming remained perfectly still, as if her pride and composure had crashed like a program encountering errors, unable to reboot.
